To think that no one would notice if I spent £50 on a wedding dress...

All the wedding dresses I have seen that I really love are quite overbudget as I'm looking for something a little bit 'alternative' when compared with the traditional princess-y style. IABU to some extent because I could probably afford to pay over the £500 budget I have set myself. But I also think that it's a huge amount of money to spend on something that I will definitely only wear once (I'm not by any means a dressy girl) and I don't feel like being extravagant would be a very good representation of DP and I as a couple.

I've just been looking at alternatives on Asos and have seen a couple of things I like in the £50 region. AIBU to think that no one would notice if I got something really cheap as long as it fitted nicely? Do you think budget wedding dresses can look just as good?

I’m getting married in 9 weeks and my dress was £90. It’s actually a top and skirt I got from coast in the sale.
Love it and can’t wait to wear it.

Like @Lionsleepstonight mine was really expensive and is now moldering in a box. Because it was so much money, I didn't feel I could chuck it out, and every time I come across it now I feel bad about it just sat there.

notreallythere · 30/09/2017 22:43

Lionsleepstonight, you can send it off to be dry cleaned by wedding dress specialists and get it back in a nice longlasting presentation box with a bow. That in itself is pricey though. I might get mine out and parade round the house in it on my anniversaries, just to get some extra wear out of it Grin

Heathen4Hire · 30/09/2017 22:43

I wore a white suit from Debenhams sale and it cost me £75.

Honestly, no one gave a monkeys.

MapMyMum · 30/09/2017 22:48

Honestly people will know you havent spent 100s or 1000s on it. But the main thing is why should you care. Wear a dress you love, feel good in and are confident in. If anyone asks about the dress ask them if theyve enjoyed the meal youve just paid for them to eat!

Ttbb · 30/09/2017 22:51

It's the fit and the quality of the fabric that counts. So long as it looks like it was made to fit you and the fabric doesn't look synthetic no one will give a damn.

caoraich · 30/09/2017 22:51

After a day spent helping a friend look for wedding dresses, I think YADNBU! The cost and the whole fandango about it being "THE dress" is just wild.

Have you tried TKMaxx??

Another friend got her wedding dress from there for £50. She then spent another £50 on a hoop thingy to floof it out underneath (can you tell I am unmarried??) and having it taken in to fit her perfectly. Everyone who saw it asked if it had been handmade for her, she looked so fantastic

Penny4UrThoughts · 30/09/2017 22:54

I went to a verrrry posh affair. My dress was a £17 one from H&M (the only thing I could find at short notice that I liked), which I accessorised quite well (for me - I'm not really all that fussed about clothes and stuff).

When my friend turned up (we were meeting at the event) she said she nearly didn't recognise me as I had dressed so well for the occasion.

Penny4UrThoughts · 30/09/2017 22:55

Ooh missed my point. It's not how much you spend, it's how well you wear it.

lorelairoryemily · 30/09/2017 23:03

If you love it that's all that matters. I got married 2 weeks ago, ordered a dress in Feb for €1800, tried it on 2 weeks before the wedding and realised I hated it, the shop let me change it for a new one that had just come in that day, that one was €1300, but I ended up paying €2200 for itBlush I loved it though and felt amazing in it

JanQuadrantVincent · 30/09/2017 23:07

Still under £350 though! And it has reviews which is always good and from London

SilverySurfer · 30/09/2017 23:11

It makes total sense. I was watching Say Yes to the Dress (about Kleinfeld bridal shop in New York). One bride to be decided one dress was not enough, she wanted one for the ceremony and one for the reception. I thought they were ghastly - see through top, cut outs, lots of crystals and bling. Her fiance turned up to pay the bill - $50,000 for 2 dresses - his mouth dropped open and he then paid up. So stupid.

DaisyDrip · 30/09/2017 23:13

Your wedding, your dress, your choice.

Congratulations, I hope you have a wonderful day.

MadameJosephine · 30/09/2017 23:18

gunsandbanjos that's beautiful, I'm sure you'll look fabulous. All the best for the big day Flowers

pandarific · 30/09/2017 23:19

Mine was £1000, but a designer sample - would have been double or more.

It was beautiful, had dragonflies on the skirt...

pandarific · 30/09/2017 23:21

I also feel bad about mine being hidden away never to be worn again. Really not sure I want to sell it though, though I'm sure I could get at least £800 for it.

TheKidsAreTakingMySanity · 30/09/2017 23:24

I bought mine from China (via eBay) and it was a beautiful wedding gown. Huge thing with lace and embroidery and oh my Lordy it was stunning! And only £69! I told anyone who'd listen! 😂😂

Flaming · 30/09/2017 23:28

I got a dress in the Debenhams sale and it was absolutely gorgeous, then lost loads of weight and couldn’t wear it, so bought a dress in the bhs sale for £60. Not one person asked where I got my dress, I felt fabulous and what else mattered??

tillytown · 30/09/2017 23:28

Op, if the dresses you were looking at were reduced, they won't show up with the other dresses, they'll be in the outlet bit.
Or buy this - m.asos.com/asos/asos-bridal-beach-lace-maxi-dress/prd/7884130? it's lace and backless

stripysleeves · 30/09/2017 23:39

Maybe it wasn't meant to be... there were two I liked and they both seem to have completely vanished off the website

Have a look on ebay. I've had luck before with finding things that have been in the shops recently.

I think people like me get stuff to try on then forget to take them back in time! There's a fair chance that might happen with a £50 wedding type dress.

stripysleeves · 30/09/2017 23:40

@gunsandbanjos that's gorgeous :)

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 30/09/2017 23:43

MrsLettuce I hadn't realised that ChiChi actually had a website! That's quite exciting!

This was one of the ones I liked!:
www.chichiclothing.com/products/Chi-Chi-Aliannah-Dress.html

But I've just seen this and although it's a bit off-piste in terms of the shape I liked, I love the lace and it's definitely long enough to not raise any eyebrows in a church!
www.chichiclothing.com/products/Chi-Chi-Aniya-Dress.html

Also a big fan of this:
www.chichiclothing.com/products/Chi-Chi-Jenelle-Dress.html

Basically maybe I'll just buy a tonne of cheap things, try them on and if they suck I still have 10 months to buy a dress!
