Poundland

Is it just me who thinks poundland shouldn't be allowed to sell items for more than £1. Why even bother call it poundland?

This irks me too! This mini Facebook rant about it - and the comments - really made me laugh!

I haven't been out in a while, so popped to our local poundland today to see they now sell...

COATS

Poundland sells bloody coats!Hmm

they're £8

bluit · 30/09/2017 22:14

Paracetamol are 19p in lots of shops, 3 for £1 in poundland.

Aeroflotgirl · 30/09/2017 22:15

Went to Poundland today, they were selling clothes and shoes, obviously not for £1, very deceiving.

TheFirstMrsDV · 30/09/2017 22:18

Does it mean we can legitimately walk round asking 'how much is that?', 'and this?' 'and what about this, how much'?

YANBU.

We had this exact thing today! Bought some crap food. Got home and looked at the receipt and the pack of mini cheddars were £2! It never occured to me to check the price because, you know, its POUNDland and they were withh all the other £1 food, not with the overpriced crap for £8 by the tills or anything.

Last time I went into the big Poundland in town, I was very disappointed to see half of the shop had been taken over by crap clothes, and they were bloody expensive and I could bet better in the supermarkets.

Last time I went in Poundworld, I bought a big bottle of shampoo, handed over £1 and she told me it was £1.50. I paid but wasn't impressed tbh. You can't have a shop that claims everything is a £1 and then start charging more for stuff you don't expect to cost more. Obviously the perfumes and household stuff is obvious it's more expensive but it looks like they are starting to sell a lot of other stuff for more, that just makes it into Poundstretcher, which is crap.

Aeroflotgirl · 30/09/2017 22:46

They should bloody stop calling themselves Poundland when they are not!

Sequence · 01/10/2017 09:41

Some things aren't £1 at Poundland and some people aren't mothers on Mumsnet. I'm sure we can manage 😀

noeffingidea · 01/10/2017 10:10

How is this confusing?
I'm just going by my local poundland, but everything that isn't £1 is very clearly marked, in figures about 2 inches high that even I can read without my glasses on.
Personally I welcome this. I can now buy larger items such as an ironing board, the kind of thing that I used to buy at Woolworths. You can only buy a limited number of things for £1, therefore a pound shop that sticks to this price range can only be of limited use.

x2boys · 01/10/2017 10:32

Yep the pound land and world near me do this too increasingly their special offers are taking more and more shelf space they used to be beind the till but now they are all over the shop Hmm

FakePlasticTeaLeaves · 01/10/2017 10:41

Maybe it's because retail is dying and they are trying their best to stay afloat, so have introduced new deals.

Nettletheelf · 01/10/2017 11:47

Since we voted to leave the EU, sterling has declined against other currencies. So stuff that isn't manufactured in the U.K. costs more, see? So the range of goods you can offer for £1 reduces.

Plus, there's this thing called 'inflation' which tends to increase costs and hence prices over time.

Do you think that Poundland etc should still be selling the same things for £1 in ten years' time when everybody else's prices have risen by, say, 20%? How's that going to work? Shops are businesses, not charities.

My experience is that the stores selling goods for more than £1 mark the prices clearly, and some have rebranded as 'Poundland plus', for example.

Expecting them to continue to sell everything for £1 into perpetuity is ridiculous. You must see that? It would be like a shop set up in the middle ages as 'Groat Land' continuing to trade at the same prices now and selling loaves of bread for a fraction of a penny. No doubt some of their customers would be furious if the price went up to two groats.

Has anyone actually brought the clothes from pep&co? The clothes arent expensive and for moms who don't have much money they can easily pick up an outfit for under £10. School uniform with 101 day gurantee, i think thats amazing with how quick kids go through uniform.

x2boys · 01/10/2017 15:20

Yeah I have bought the leggings I'm fat I know I don't look good in leggings but they are comfy and for two quid a pop a bargain!

Sheila64 · 01/10/2017 15:24

Everything for £1 was the idea of our founders in 1990 and we’ve grown to become one of the largest discount & value retailers in the UK, with thousands of great products at £1 across over 700 stores… and sometimes we offer special promotions and products at other prices.

GlitterGlue · 01/10/2017 15:31

I got caught out by items not costing a quid in poundworld the other day. They used to at least keep them separately at the front. Now they muddle them in with the other stock and don't bother to label them.

I'm not a Pep&Co fan, although I did randomly get a cardigan in there for about three quid in the sale which has washed beautifully and still looks new about year or so later.

peppersaunt · 01/10/2017 15:38

I think Pep & Co is the Poundland house brand.

Sheila64 · 01/10/2017 15:47

www.pepandco.com/about-us/

I get that people find it hard to understand the concept of going into poundland and seeing things for more than a pound. Times have changed and to keep businesses growing and keeping customers interested i am guessing they have to shake things up a bit to try new things. You will always get people who dont like it, thats life but i don't get the people who slate and moan about poundland but still shop there and moan about a supposedly crap clothing brand but have never experienced the quality to see?

Bramley222 · 10/01/2022 23:20

Poundland shouldn't be allowed to keep calling themselves Poundland when most of the stuff they sell, even things they have been selling for ages is now over a pound. The name gives them an unfair advantage over other shops that are actually cheaper for many things. Calling themselves Poundland still is misleading because it implies that most things will be a pound. If this isn't the case anymore (and it isn't!), they shouldn't be allowed to keep calling themselves Poundland.

MumW · 10/01/2022 23:35

I picked up some baskets before Xmas with a £1 label which seemed to describe them only to get to the till and to be charged £3.50. I took them to the shelf and whilst the assistant agreed it was misleading, the extremely tiny product numbers differed by a couple of digits.

5foot5 · 10/01/2022 23:42

I know this should actually be classed as a ZOMBIE thread as it was started FOUR years ago. However I have to say I only realised this about Poundland just before Christmas and was quite put out. I went in to buy some chocolate bars to wrap up with gift vouchers and chose the biggest bars, naively thinking they would all be £1. Was shocked when I got to the till

MeatyRvita · 10/01/2022 23:42

Yes it’s so annoying, they’ve now lost their unique selling point!
I’d much rather go to home bargains or B&M for ‘bargain’ price shopping now.
