"I'm thinking of moving to the north east, where can you recommend"

Neither would a Scottish person, not a Welsh person.

Why do English people seem to think that everything revolves around England? I see this time and time again on Mumsnet. People assuming that "North East" is flipping England.

OP posts:

Love shake crisps!! They were awesome.

Also love Norn Iron, lots of family there and definitely how we should spell it.

Not sure this thread has a good point but glad OP got it off her chest. Not fun to be annoyed

HostaFireAndIce · 29/09/2017 15:29

Right, I've googled the suggestions and I think I am definitely thinking of the Smiths ones with the little blue bag. There do seem to have been others still kicking around though and, as Pestilentialone says above they are now made by Walkers, but I fear I am so old that it's the Smiths ones I remember. Shall we get back to the scrap now?

BananaShit · 29/09/2017 15:30

Oyyvey Northern Ireland and the north of Ireland aren't necessarily the same thing. So Donegal for example is in the latter but not the former. Whereas there's no such distinction in England, and all of England is part of the same state.

North has a range of meanings in Ireland that it doesn't in England, another important point that OP doesn't bother addressing. Whereas west doesn't. Not coincidentally, west is also used without qualifiers much more commonly by Irish people, and in the same way as English people use north east.

It's almost like OP needs to put a bit more thought into her analysis...

HostaFireAndIce Ahh Salt and Shake, class

Pestilentialone · 29/09/2017 15:31

I refuse to discuss anything other than crisps until Wessex has been reinstated.

HostaFireAndIce · 29/09/2017 15:33

How about Mercia? I'm a fan of Mercia.

WaveWash · 29/09/2017 15:33

An Irish person would never say this
Elendon · 29/09/2017 15:35

Isn't Ulster a province in Ireland?

HostaFireAndIce · 29/09/2017 15:37

Blue Cheese and Onion is so wrong.

elisaveta · 29/09/2017 15:37
Grin

Just ask them very nicely to put a little more thought into the way they refer to London, because it does matter.

AlexaAmbidextra · 29/09/2017 15:37

FFS - rolls eyes.

apostropheuse · 29/09/2017 15:38

My granny referred to Northern Ireland as the Black North.

To be fair, that was quite some time ago.

rightnowimpissed · 29/09/2017 15:38

Blue is only for Salt and vinegar! Full Stop!

Pestilentialone · 29/09/2017 15:39

Green salt and vinegar is more wrong.

BananaShit · 29/09/2017 15:40

Are you sure she wasn't meaning the Black Country near Birmingham from the perspective of someone in Morocco apostropheuse?

rightnowimpissed · 29/09/2017 15:40

Yes Ulster is a provance in Ireland along with Munster Connaght and Lenister.

TizzyDongue · 29/09/2017 15:40

I think the OP needs to go to magicmum, heymammy or rollercoaster (if they are still in existance) and then they will be happy in knowing that The North and the West the Midlands or East coast or the South West refer to Ireland. Many Not Irish users of these aforementioned site manage to figure that out.

Countries can to be divided into regions using geographic references with 'the' in front (and if being a stickler for grammar with capital letters).

The North East isn't a compass direction it's referencing a region. I think even Scottish users of MN, even with it being south of them, can figure out that the North East mentioned on MN probably means Newcastle area and the such like. I doubt American* users are confused either.

It's not arrogance or whatever other feeling your giant chip on your shoulder is telling you. I don't live in England and I don't need 'of England' added.

Also Mumsnet isn't international. It can be accessed from around the world admittedly but that doesn't make it international ya big twit.

*Oh the arrogance!! Oh the self absorption!!! Expecting people to know I mean USA by 'America'. They might think I mean Chile or Peru or somewhere else!!!!!

Coconutspongexo · 29/09/2017 15:41

I can think of bigger things to get pissed off about like.

Of course you're going to assume someone means Newcastle ways if someone mentions the North East when you're from England

WaveWash · 29/09/2017 15:42

Im not so keen on crisps, I'm more of a cheesy Wotsit person. (Not literally) They are made of real cheese and some other stuff. Smile

rightnowimpissed · 29/09/2017 15:42

Golden Wonder Salt & Vinegar now these are amazing!

VenusOfWillendorf · 29/09/2017 15:42

Isn't Ulster a province in Ireland?

Yes. A province of the Island of Ireland.

TizzyDongue · 29/09/2017 15:42

I trust no crisp packet colour and treat all with suspicion.

Someoneasdumbasthis · 29/09/2017 15:43

The North East is a region of England FFS. So is the South West. I despair.

rightnowimpissed · 29/09/2017 15:43

Tizzy, Its a good job they put the names on or you'd be totaly lost.
