To hate it when people try to give you their £1 for your trolley?

For some reason I dislike doing this. When you're putting your trolley back and people try to give you their £1 and you give them your trolley.

I don't want their £1, I want to keep mine.

It's happened today and the lady gave me 5 20p coins, in exchange for my £1 coin, so essentially I just gave her change. Only now I don't have my £1 coin (which I always keep in my car for the trolley), so I've now got to change it myself back to £1.

Previously I think YABU, but right now is a bit of a special situation because there are loads of lockers etc that still only work with old pound coins, which are fast vanishing from circulation - so two 50ps will not turn back into a compatible old pound coin at the bank.

FluffyNinja · 28/09/2017 17:49

I use tokens so it's easy. No-one has ever asked me for my trolley though.
I live in a touristy area and love it when the mostly American or other overseas visitors go shopping as many of them leave the coins in the trolley and so I often collect a few extra quid during the summer months. Grin

claraschu · 28/09/2017 17:50

This is just a small opportunity to help out a fellow living creature.

I am always grateful when I get the chance to do some little thing which makes someone else's day a little better; pathetic as it sounds, I feel a bit better about myself, like I have done something to justify my existence.

Fucky · 28/09/2017 17:50

Wow I asked a woman yesterday if she could change 2 50p coins for a £1 coin and she looked at me as if I was crazy! Didn't know asking wasn't the done thing to do.

I always help out if I can, this lady made me feel like a beggar!

1DAD2KIDS · 28/09/2017 17:52

What a classic British problem

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 28/09/2017 17:53

But why the actaul hell would anyone have a problem with swapping in the first place??

You are doing a nice thing for someone, making their day a bit easier, and it literally hasn't cost you a thing!

It's just a coin.
A coin that fill the tills, banks, pockets, purses and sofas from Lands End to John O'Groats.
One that is very, very easy to replace.

Why in the name of humanity does it hurt you to have 5 20ps instead of a pound?
You will, unless you are the queen, end up with a pound coin at some point very soon.

OnTheRise · 28/09/2017 17:53

I have a token which stays on my keyring. It lets me get the trolley off the row, and then pulls out of the trolley. It's like magic. So I just give people the empty trolley once I'm done with it.

Caulkheadupnorf · 28/09/2017 17:53

Get the shopping delivered and you won't have to interact with people and their coins. Much simpler.

cautiousoptimist1 · 28/09/2017 17:53

I once asked if I could do this so that I had more space to manoeuvre DD into trolley. Other people have said in the past that they have a token so no but this woman told me I was very rude to ask and tutted at me all the way to the trolley park where I may have followed her to, waited for her to put her trolley back and then stood in her way while I took the same trolley

Horriblehistories · 28/09/2017 17:55

Circles that bothers me even more. I don't want their trolley I want to get my own. Even though I know all trolleys and pound coins are the same.

It wasn't about giving change, I'd always give someone change, I've obviously got a weird thing about the trolleys and the coins, and in my defence I was perfectly polite to the woman.

But iabu Blush

I once had a woman give me her trolley in exchange for my pound. Only to discover too late hers had no pound in it ! I can't believe I fell for that , just trying to be helpful !

Stickerrocks · 28/09/2017 17:59

Change supermarkets. Our local Waitrose trusts us not to pinch the trolleys in the first place, so we don't need a £1!

Joinourclub · 28/09/2017 17:59

Bloody hell there are some grumpy fuckers about.

Horriblehistories · 28/09/2017 18:00

Oh gosh this thread was supposed to be lighthearted. I thought this was just a weird little quirk, you know I don't actually go around yelling at people in supermarkets approaching me with coins.

Don't we all have trivial things that bother us for no apparent reason?

Nooooooo what a bitch! I hope you spat in her face and told her how totally unreasonable she was!

viques · 28/09/2017 18:03

@FruBayer. one of my tokens IS a Waitrose token, I don't use it though, I use the one with a squiggle on that fits every trolley known to woman. it just dangles as part of my trolley token collection.

Pinkflamingo121318 · 28/09/2017 18:06

I used the key from a corned beef tin!

Just wiggle the top bit inside and it unlocks!

Tamatoa · 28/09/2017 18:10

ontherise I neeeeeed this! Link please?? Xxxxxxxx

SusanTheGentle · 28/09/2017 18:10

Ai have the perfect solution to this. Ai have my butler go to The Naice Waitrose where he does not have to put money in the trolley.

seriously though it's a really nice waitrose but the one in the Other Town has token trolleys

PandorasXbox · 28/09/2017 18:11

What?
Fucking hell I have never read anything as ridiculous in all my life.

elisaveta · 28/09/2017 18:13

It IS meant to be a lighthearted thread!! I've found it quite funny!

DJBaggySmalls · 28/09/2017 18:14

Its a common scam round my way to palm you off with a fake pound coin so I use a trolley key.

Horriblehistories · 28/09/2017 18:15

Well I wasn't looking for a row so I'm off.

I guess all those people with aggressive responses are perfect and never get bothered by anything weird or trivial ever.

I haven't actually been rude to anyone at the shops or on here.

OP posts:
Horriblehistories · 28/09/2017 18:17

It really was only meant to be a silly thread.

OP posts:
FruBayerischOla · 28/09/2017 18:17

viques, maybe I should have said that my local Waitrose doesn't need coins/tokens in the trolleys - we also have an extremely nice car park attendant who, I think, also keeps an eye on potential trolley wars Grin

Presumably there are some Waitrose stores that do need coins/tokens in their trolleys?

I've got a Co-op trolley token somewhere, although I've never used it!
