To think the swimming pool is for swimming not bloody jogging?

Went for a swim in the slow lane. Fairly quiet yo start with but got busier, that's probably relevant. There's a couple jogging round the deep end. So starting halfway along the pool, going round the top then crossing over the lane to fo it all over again.

It is the slow lane, but they were very slow. And I had to swim round them and wait for them to cross the pool when I met them in the middle. And every few laps they stopped by the side halfway up for a chat. Last week, I've not been in a while.

It got busier and they continued jogging.

Aibu? I'm normally fairly live and let live, but is this a new thing and I'm missing something?

They are jogging IN the pool? How the fuck does that work?

Wolfiefan · 27/09/2017 22:49

I have known people do all kind of weird and wonderful pool exercises as rehab.

AtSea1979 · 27/09/2017 22:50

Jogging in the shallow end I get but in the deep end? How do you jog when you can't touch the bottom?

Hellywelly10 · 27/09/2017 22:51

Very annoying. But you have to let it go. My problem is important too slowell for the fast lane and too fast for the slow Lane.

CrabappleCake · 27/09/2017 22:53

I was wondering about rehab after I'd posted this. They must be really fit to do it. It was impressive, just kind of in the way.

It's a perfectly valid form of exercise that is easy on the joints. They have a right to use the pool, too.

Frazzled2207 · 27/09/2017 22:54

I lived in japan and this was actually a thing. Everyone jogging in the pool and only me swimming Blush

BikeRunSki · 27/09/2017 22:55

People do this a lot in the pool I go to, including the local pro rugby team. The pool is the same depth all over.

Can you not move to a different lane if they are going slower than you? I find that "slow" and "fast" are pretty relative in pool lanes, depending who else is in at the time.

BroomstickOfLove · 27/09/2017 22:55

Deep water running? It uses up more calories than running on land, and is generally safe for people with joint problems. Physios do it with people recovering from injury, or who have arthritis etc .

CrabappleCake · 27/09/2017 22:56

I know, but the hanging about in the middle was annoying. I just had lane rage didn't I?

My mum has very serious problems with her back and walking/jogging in the pool is one of the only exercises she can actually do.

ALittleMop · 27/09/2017 22:57

I am quite "whatever floats your boat" generally but if it is lane swimming time it is lane swimming time and they were getting in your way. That sounds annoying.

Though not as annoying at the blokes who think they are faster than everyone else so splash like fuck up the middle of the lane not particularly quickly.

They should only be allowed between 6 and 7 am.

At our pool there is a fast lane, a middling lane, a slow lane, and a pissing about doing whatever lane. That's were they should have been. If you had such lane designations. Either that or do whole lengths.

WhereDoesThisRoadGo · 27/09/2017 23:00

The pool is for everyone's water needs, not just traditional swimmers. Rehab is precisely what I think when I see someone like this because it was me once in my life. It is a tough but important technique that does wonders for getting people back on their feet. Although people do also use the technique for general fitness. So, you had to swim around them? There will be someone who has to move around you one day.

MissMurielStacy · 27/09/2017 23:02

Aqua jogging is a thing in Finland too. You wear a float belt to stop you from sinking at the deep end. It's all very civilised over there with dedicated lanes for jogging.

giggly · 27/09/2017 23:03

Most pools in Australia have a walking lane. You get chased out if you even attempt to swim in it. I used to do lunges but then it was in the kids pool so never past my chest.

I haven't seen this in my pool, though plenty of people do various exercises.
I would expect roped off lanes to be for swimming laps only, and everyone using them has a responsibility to keep up with the pace or to move over. That's the way it is in my pool and it works fine. If the lanes are full then you have to swim in the other half of the pool, and navigate round everyone who is exercising, splashing around or just standing there chatting to their mates.

TreasureInMyTummy · 27/09/2017 23:04

I'm pregnant with sciatica( slipped disc) and gestational diabetes so physio and consultant advised walking in swimming pool ( helps reduce/control sugar levels, reduces blood clot risks and strengthens core muscles) I have to stop every so many lengths ( not unfit it just wears me out). I can't swim due to back/sciatica pain. I tend to stop at shallow end ( though my deep end I can still stand in) but sometimes also get cramp and have to pull over to edge to stamp foot.

I hate going the pool as I assume everybody thinks I'm odd/ will get annoyed at me but only thing I can really do at moment.

TreasureInMyTummy · 27/09/2017 23:05

Oh god and I make breaststroke movements with arms to move as much of my body as am able - I do try going when it's quiet.

ProseccoMamam · 27/09/2017 23:06

What the fuck is a slow lane and why are people jogging in a pool? What the fuck is going on Confused

Janus · 27/09/2017 23:12

My dad does this as he has a mini stroke 2 years ago and a hip replacement 2 months ago. His physio suggested it and he finds it definitely stengthens everything. I watched him do it this summer in our pool on holiday and found it quite moving to watch (he was super fit just 3 years ago). May well be some sort of physio for them too?

thecatfromjapan · 27/09/2017 23:12

Somebody does this in the pool when I go. I just swim around them. I'm pretty much using the pool for physio at the moment. Tbh, having read all this on here, I'll be giving it a go, too.

CrabappleCake · 27/09/2017 23:16

treasuretummy dint worry, everyone else seemed fine with it, they are probably regulars and know the score.
