To think the swimming pool is for swimming not bloody jogging?

Went for a swim in the slow lane. Fairly quiet yo start with but got busier, that's probably relevant. There's a couple jogging round the deep end. So starting halfway along the pool, going round the top then crossing over the lane to fo it all over again.

It is the slow lane, but they were very slow. And I had to swim round them and wait for them to cross the pool when I met them in the middle. And every few laps they stopped by the side halfway up for a chat. Last week, I've not been in a while.

It got busier and they continued jogging.

Aibu? I'm normally fairly live and let live, but is this a new thing and I'm missing something?

"There's a couple jogging round the deep end."

Deep end? Are they wearing flotation belts? Aqua shoes?

I did not know this was a thing, but I've just googled and it looks great!

BlueberryMarshmallow · 27/09/2017 23:19

Two women do that in the pool I go to too. They link arms when they do it taking up a third of the pool leaving about 8 swimmers to dodge and weave. Those and the pair that don’t shower before and wear choking perfume give me serious swimmers rage, my goggles hide my daggers well.

I had some serious surgery and my rehab - meant to be life long - involved doing a lot of exercises in the pool before & after I started the limited amount of swimming I was permitted.

The crap I got from other swimmers even at a tiny private local pool was so horrible that I wasn't able to continue. I'm hypermobile with a good degree of dyspraxia so swimming was the safest exercise for me.

I felt so uncomfortable I just stopped going. The only other 'safe' exercise for me is either paid 1:1 PT sessions at my home or walking, walking, walking.

I remain fat and unfit. I was neither of these before I became unwell and had I not been bullied out of the pool I would be neither of fat nor unfit now.

Just swim around the, for heaven's sake, and stop trying to police everyone else's behaviour.

tippz · 27/09/2017 23:43

I don't know about 'jogging' in the pool (haven't seen that to be honest!) but I do get utterly pissed off with people standing in the shallow end in groups of 2-4 people, just chatting. Confused I mean, did you not come here to SWIM, because I fucking did! Stop getting in my way!!! Angry

SouthWindsWesterly · 28/09/2017 00:46

There's a dedicated walking lane in my pool...

TheClaws · 28/09/2017 03:52

At my local pool, there is are fast, medium and slow lanes, plus a walking and general exercise area. I’ve just come out of rehab so I stick to the walking area, doing my exercises as well I can, trying to keep out of the way of everyone else. “Everyone else” includes: swimmers; splashing, uncontrolled kids; groups just standing around in odd areas; and others like me. People must think I’m a bit odd with my huge bag of aqua exercise gear I bring with me - but I don’t care much. I do jog a bit too. Not at the deep end though!

Anyway, point of that essay is - the joggers should be in a designated exercise area, if there is one, or you make certain you are in a swimming lane.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 28/09/2017 05:58

It's fine to do it... but totally not okay to disrupt lane swimming in favour of it!

QueenofLouisiana · 28/09/2017 06:03

Walking through the water is an early exercise for those in recovery from heart attacks. It's very common to see it in our pool on the early shift- not so much when the inflatable assault course is out! Grin

ShotsFired · 28/09/2017 06:32

@BikeRunSki Can you not move to a different lane if they are going slower than you? I find that "slow" and "fast" are pretty relative in pool lanes, depending who else is in at the time.

I was swimming at a "free time" once - one lane sectioned off, while the rest of it was family splash. All fine, I plodded up and down my own private slow lane. Family splash time ended, lane swimming began. Unfortunately they made my lane the fast lane but I didn't actually realise this until I got almost mown down by some angry strong swimmers who thought I was being a twat. Blush

In my defence, I was swimming in a lane nearest the pool edge which is nearly always slow lane, with medium and fast being further into the pool.

Pikachuwithyourmouthclosed · 28/09/2017 06:37

We have a jogging lane in my pool. I do an aqua running class. Its brill. Total mix of fitness, age and ability.

rightsofwomen · 28/09/2017 06:37

Pool running is a thing. They probably have a floaty belt thing.

If it's lane swimming they should be respecting the rules for lane swimming. End of. Tell the lifeguard.

CrabappleCake · 28/09/2017 07:12

It's quite a small pool, there's the slow, medium and fast lanes and then the rest is for general milling, pool toys, etc.

No float belts or obvious rehab equipment, do see those.

As pool jogging is obviously a thing and they were discussing running times, I think they were in training rather than rehab.

Pool running w/o a belt is a very intense workout!

nb I am a runner.

PolkadottyRose · 28/09/2017 07:40

We don't have pool runners, but I do find the groups of ladies who walk very slowly up and down the pool, 3 abreast, just talking, whilst all the people who are there to actually swim have to manoeuvre around them, intensely annoying. They take up far more room than they would if they were swimming, and they never move to accommodate others.

Hissy · 28/09/2017 07:41

Then they should be in the general milling lane. Full stop.

I HATE people who think it’s perfectly acceptable to stop swimming and start walking when others are using the lane for, you know, swimming.

If there is a general area, that’s the place for exercise that’s not actually swimming.

If there’s only lanes, then it’s best to TALK to the other users so that they don’t just crash into you or each other while trying to avoid your sudden decision to stop.

I also loathe people who take up the slow lane by practically floating up and down for a couple of lengths and then spending 20 mins chatting at the end, of course not allowing anyone any wall space to push off from...

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 28/09/2017 07:47

I've no problem with the aqua jogging, just follow lane etiquette if you're in a lane.

My problem tends to be that I'm a small female, fast-ish front crawler in the awkward gap between a leisurely breast stroke in the medium lane and pounding men splashing there way up and down the fast lane.

Purplemeddler · 28/09/2017 07:50

I've not seen people doing it in my local pool but I know that quite a few people from my running club go once a week. Either it's for rehab while injured, or they do it as one of their weekly sessions to avoid impact and reduce the risk of injury.

But they should not be doing it in a lane and getting in your way .

Was it a one-off or are they there a lot?

Fintress · 28/09/2017 08:10

I'm currently half way through a course of hydotherapy and have been advised to continue my exercises in the local pool. I feel quite uncomfortable at the thought in case I look like a loon.

The local pool has tons of classes, one of which is float fit, I've hever heard of it but it looks hard! I might try to summon up the courage to go to an aquarobics session.

I think it's actually quite easy to tell if someone is in rehab, doing exercises etc, ...

It's not the exercise as such it was the doing it in such a way that it was getting in the way of swimmers.

A walking / jogging lane is a v good idea indeed.

When my husband was recovering from back surgery he was told to jog in the pool rather than swim.

user1499786242 · 28/09/2017 08:51

I've never heard of this but I'm intrigued
I have a bad back so swimming is painful
Need to strengthen core muscles
Off to google I go haha

CrabappleCake · 28/09/2017 09:19

I'm quite happy to swim round people who are slow, or be overtaken, happy that people are doing rehab in the slow swim lane while the big pool is full of people being daft/playing etc.

It was the stopping halfway round for a chat that was a pain and crossing over the swim lanes - rather than say stopping for a chat at the ends and being considerate when crossing the swim lanes.
