AIBU feeding my child this

DS1 is ill. He's had croup for 4 days, has a chest infection and is full of cold. He's obviously not been himself, usually he isn't a fussy eater. He likes most things including lots of veg. Would prefer that over a chocolate bar. definitely not like me.

Today we had Moroccan lamb tagine, and like the past 4 days he has turned his nose up at it. So I resorted in cooking him a plate full of veg. But as I tuck into my lamb and him his broccoli, I feel a tad terrible, although he's actually eating something finally. So AIBU

I see nothing wrong whatsoever.

SocMcDuffin · 27/09/2017 15:19

It's nutrients and at least its something. better than my wee fussy bugger eats most days

The appetite takes a hit when we are unwell so he's probably just not hungry. If he will eat veg, I'd take it as a win for now. When he's better you can remind him to eat his full plate.

TurnipCake · 27/09/2017 15:20

No need to feel terrible, I eat all sorts when I'm ill.

Hope he gets better soon!

RavingRoo · 27/09/2017 15:23

Is it hot?

SwishswishBiTCH · 27/09/2017 15:31

@Raving yes it's hot.

I think when they're ill and have no appetite you should let them eat what they want (more or less) just to get something down them. My DD was off school with a heavy cold and very sore throat last year. For several days she just ate ice cream, cold custard or iceberg lettuce because that's what she fancied and the only things her throat could cope with.

JustPutSomeGlitterOnIt · 27/09/2017 15:35

YANBU, loads of nutrients and he's eating it!
They always say eating isn't even that important when they're poorly don't they, so long as they're drinking. I bet there's a good amount of fluids in that veg too.

cjt110 · 27/09/2017 15:44

If he eats it then nope. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Last night, my son who isnt well, had 3 biscuits and a bowl of plain pasta for his tea. He doesnt have such a crap choice most of the time so as a one off it doesnt matter. Hope your LO feels better soon

PandorasXbox · 27/09/2017 15:49

Huh?

How is anyone going to tell you YABU Grin
Hope he soon gets better.

BoomBoomBoomBoooom · 27/09/2017 15:50

Everything is reasonable when you are ill. You can eat whatever you want!

cjt110 · 27/09/2017 15:53

A plate of chips with a poorly child - Not U.

Biscuits and ice cream with a poorly child - Not U.

As long as they are eating something and drinking, nothing is unreasonable.

caringdenise009 · 27/09/2017 15:53

I used to go and get KFC chips or McDonald's when my son was ill. I'd know he was feeling really bad if he turned them down. He grew up into a great big healthy man.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 27/09/2017 15:58

I think when they are ill you should just ask them what they fancy. I was a sickly child and have lots of pleasant childhood memories revolving around being tucked up on the sofa watching Crown Court with a bowl of Heinz chicken soup and a Jacobs mallow.

retreatwhispering · 27/09/2017 16:00

Veggies have lots of fluid in them, so that's probably a good choice TBH. Poorly kids should eat what they like.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 27/09/2017 16:01

What cjt said. In our house there are no rules about what's ok or not for the dc to eat when they're ill and off their food - if they'll eat it, they can have it.

existentialmoment · 27/09/2017 16:01

Oh come on, aibu to give my child a bowl of healthy vegetables.I feel terrible he isn't eating the tagine...is this a joke?

PinkHeart5913 · 27/09/2017 16:05

Most of us get fussy over food when ill Me the important thing is he ate something.

Yanbu but this is mumsnet and someone will be along saying too much sugar in sweetcorn or that the broccoli should be organic picked by unicorns

Katedotness1963 · 27/09/2017 16:05

When they're ill anything you can get them to eat is a good thing.

Mine's about to get cheesy pasta from a packet mix.

WorraLiberty · 27/09/2017 16:08

I'm off to call Social Services Hmm

Orangebird69 · 27/09/2017 16:09

I quite often give ds a plate of sweetcorn, peas and sweet potato if he's being picky/off his food. As pp's have said, if they're poorly, they can eat what they like!

Ellisandra · 27/09/2017 16:09

Is this some lame stealth boast?

Yeah, you're a shit mother feeding broccoli.

cathf · 27/09/2017 16:09

You know uanbu really don't you, OP? You just want a little show off about you son's healthy eating habits? The clue was in the unnecessary fact that he prefers veg to chocolate.

PollyFlint · 27/09/2017 16:10

Of course it's not unreasonable if he's been unwell and that's literally all he'll eat.

Very low-cal for a child though, especially if he's been off his food for a few days - so perhaps try and get him to have a piece of bread or crackers with it or something. Or what about adding some potatoes or rice? Or a little bit of plain pasta? Or a banana or some other fruit afterwards?

There's nothing wrong with it - I wouldn't fancy lamb tagine if I was feeling ill either - but he's probably feeling pretty weak at the moment and some carbs would help a lot.

WorraLiberty · 27/09/2017 16:11

Can I just add that I'm so glad your post is accompanied by a photograph of said dinner.

Had it not been, I really wouldn't have been able to picture what a bowl of veg looks like...
