AIBU feeding my child this

DS1 is ill. He's had croup for 4 days, has a chest infection and is full of cold. He's obviously not been himself, usually he isn't a fussy eater. He likes most things including lots of veg. Would prefer that over a chocolate bar. definitely not like me.

Today we had Moroccan lamb tagine, and like the past 4 days he has turned his nose up at it. So I resorted in cooking him a plate full of veg. But as I tuck into my lamb and him his broccoli, I feel a tad terrible, although he's actually eating something finally. So AIBU

OP, you don't get a medal for having a child who eats vegetables you know.

Winterc00kie · 27/09/2017 16:12

as if you need to ask if YABU feed your poorly child veg?

Jesus wept

NerrSnerr · 27/09/2017 16:13

This has to be a stealth boast. Well done you for your brilliant parenting.

viques · 27/09/2017 16:15

@Polly, Plenty of carbs/ calories for a child in the corn. no need for extra bread or crackers.

mrsRosaPimento · 27/09/2017 16:16

When my dcs are ill they get anything they want. Custard, ice cream, chocolate pudding... I'm ill with a migraine and want rich teas. That's all I've eaten today. Grin

QueenNefertitty · 27/09/2017 16:20

Are you kidding?

DS is 1, and had tonsillitis and gastroenteritis double whammy. Until last week he'd never had refined sugar or junk food. Now he hasn't eaten for a week, and I've rejoiced today when he's eaten bread and jam, oven chips and ice cream.

And I give zero fucks. He lives on greens and whole foods usually FYI.

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 27/09/2017 16:25

DD is 3 and has a cough, sore throat etc. Yesterday she had coco pops for dinner, this morning she had a mini milk for breakfast (she left half of it so she must be poorly!).

I'm not going to even try and justify it with "well usually she'll turn down chocolate covered in more chocolate with sugar sprinkled on top for some kale quinoa and hummus", she loves beige food, but when they're poorly I don't see the harm some comfort food can do. As long as it gets food and fluids into them I'm happy.

YABU for stealth boasting, OP.

hardhatfirmlyon · 27/09/2017 16:26

I usually just give them a can of special brew and some haribos when they are feeling a bit peaky, but each to their own...

SwishswishBiTCH · 27/09/2017 16:26

GrinGrin definitley not a stealth boast. I genuinely felt terrible us & his sibling eating a propper meal and him chewing on his brock Grin

it's probably because I know how how foul the trees taste.

Don't worry I'm not the perfect parent GrinGrin my boy will happily binge out with a bag of harribos, a chocolate bar and whatever junk there is lying around the house, all day everyday if he could. ring SS

YABU. Where's the protein? That sweetcorn is rather carby, he'll have a big sugar crash an hour after eating that Wink

blueskyinmarch · 27/09/2017 16:38

I have been ill with a cold/cough/sinus infection for over a week.

This is what I have bought for myself to eat tonight.

Your sons dinner is much healthier but a little less satisfying I would say.

I don't have to be ill to have a bowl of steamed broccoli for a meal! I love my veg except evil celery, and often just have a bowl of steamed veg with some butter for a quick meal.
I would often have steamed tenderstem broccoli for lunch and nothing else. It's good for you and delicious!
I'd boke at the lamb though, vom. Sorry Grin
Hope your DS is better soon.

SwishswishBiTCH · 27/09/2017 17:00

Meh he's just thrown it all back up so I'm guessing it tasted as bad as it looked GrinGrinGrin

What can I give him for his cough and croup? I went to GP and they said there's nothing to give him at all, But it's making him throw up when he's coughing Sad

He is drinking fluids, not much though.

I remember a neighbour asking 'anxiously' if she thought it was okay for her 2 year old to nibble a 'raw broccoli tree' as they trailed around the supermarket, as the other kids 'didn't seem to do that.' My eyes weren't free to roll, it would have seemed rude, but they wanted to roll down the bloody road.

I reassured her that it was probably okay, yes.

I think the same thing here, mainly.

DavetheCat2001 · 27/09/2017 17:47

Ice cream

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 27/09/2017 17:47

Swish keep him hydrated, that's the main thing.

A little of what he fancies, if he wants to eat.

Try not to worry x

blackteasplease · 27/09/2017 17:49

I would give whatever he feels like!

DavetheCat2001 · 27/09/2017 17:49

I'm serious re the ice cream btw.

A bit of plain old vanilla will give him a sugar boost, a bit of sugar for energy plus kids like to eat ice cream.

As long as he's drinking fluids that's the main thing, but I'd quit with the veggies thing as the texture is prob making him throw up + his stomach is probably delicate and it's too much to digest.

kingfishergreen · 27/09/2017 17:50

All food rules go out the window when DCs are ill.

DD has a cough/cold and the last remnants of D&V, and all she'll eat is fruit and brown bread. I worry it's too acidic (and full of sugar), but I'm grateful that it's got plenty of liquid and vitamins.

ProseccoMamam · 27/09/2017 17:53

It's a plate of veg, granted not a 'proper' meal but it's full of nutrients and vitamins that his body desperately needs. You shouldn't feel bad, it's all he can have under the circumstances

Would he take soup? Also recommend some vitamin drops or chews? Poor thing hope he gets better soon x

kkkkaty123 · 27/09/2017 18:04

Op how have you treated the croup ? My ds had it every year always in October. Twice ended up in hospital on a neb. In the end as he got older and calmer I used to stand him over a sink of hot water, breathing in the steam.
