Would you consider it a compliment or a criticism?

Context (a guy I was dating and I can't remember what I had said).

TiesThatBindMe · 27/09/2017 07:42

Jesus Christ. Have you all not slept or something? It was a simple question.

AlternativeTentacle · 27/09/2017 07:43

I would say 'gosh thank you, that's so sweet'.

Shooting from the hip is an excellent thing to be able to do. Straight in, no faffing, hitting the mark. Just ace.

Daydreamerbynight · 27/09/2017 07:43

Lol. You are doing it on purpose now.

FlaviaAlbia · 27/09/2017 07:43
iMatter · 27/09/2017 07:44

Gosh yes, you do indeed shoot from the hip OP.

Papafran · 27/09/2017 07:46

OK, fine, I would consider it a criticism then because it is the phrase I myself would use to subtly tell someone she was in fact a massive twat. HTH.

TiesThatBindMe · 27/09/2017 07:46

Now I've to start another thread to find out whether you're being mean to me or not iMatter Wink

OP posts:
Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/09/2017 07:47

Headmaster told my sons teacher that my son

'Didnt pull his punches'

I took it as a compliment under the circumstances

So i would probably take shoots from the hip as a compliment

Assuming that you went on another date after the comment Grin

AnnieAnoniMouse · 27/09/2017 07:48

Given your posts on this thread, I'm suggesting he means that you're rude.

Eurochick asked a perfectly reasonable question. Just because you typed 'context' doesn't mean it was 'context'. What you typed was 'situation', not context. You could have given some actual context instead of being rude.

Then again, when called on it...To ask for context when I've clearly written two lines with one of them being CONTEXT is idiotic or ignorant

No, you were rude. Very rude.

If that's what you're like IRL he was being very kind to describe it as 'shooting from the hip', when in fact, it's just bloody rude.

'Shooting from the hip' is more like saying 'Most women wouldn't date you because you're short'. Factual, but without thought or consideration.

Penny4UrThoughts · 27/09/2017 07:48

*I repeat:

Context (a guy I was dating and I can't remember what I had said)

Can people not read anymore?*

Can't imagine what he means by saying that to you, it's a mystery.. GrinGrin

TiesThatBindMe · 27/09/2017 07:49

Yes we were more friends with benefits than in a relationship. There were many 'dates' after.

OP posts:
Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/09/2017 07:49

Although shoot from the hip means ...talks without thinking

But then again he might not have known what it meant either Grin

poorbuthappy · 27/09/2017 07:50

Yes criticism and said to me in my last job.
But considering the bloke who said it was wetter than a fish’s wet bits I gave not a fuck.

xqwertyx · 27/09/2017 07:50

It means to act before thinking (you don't take time to aim your bullet, you just fire away from the hip Grin)

Ninjakittysmells · 27/09/2017 07:50

This thread has really made me Grin

I think op, you have provided just enough context for us to figure out what he means!

I take it he's no longer dating you?!

TiesThatBindMe · 27/09/2017 07:51

Is there a trampoline on MN because a whole lot of you are jumping to conclusions!

OP posts:
TiesThatBindMe · 27/09/2017 07:52

Ninja. I am no longer dating him.

OP posts:
SequinsOnEverything · 27/09/2017 07:52

As others have said, if you were anything like as rude as you have bern here, it would not have been meant as a compliment. Australians apparently use it to mean talks frankly/directly though.

As pp have said, you have provided situation but not context.

Penny4UrThoughts · 27/09/2017 07:53

Op, if this is a troll its one of the best I've seen.

youhavetobekidding · 27/09/2017 07:53

Eurochick asked a reasonable question.

Katedotness1963 · 27/09/2017 07:55

Shoot from the hip, don't pull any punches, don't sugar coat anything.

A criticism about being critical?

TiesThatBindMe · 27/09/2017 07:56

The context was 'I can't remember what I had said'. To a guy I was dating. Holy Mother of God but you lot aren't the brightest sparks this early in the morning. Coffee anyone?

OP posts:
ShowMePotatoSalad · 27/09/2017 07:58

It just makes me think of Alan Partridge talking to Lynn.

"Shoot from your hip....your new hip"

permatiredmum · 27/09/2017 08:00

It DOES NOT mean straight talking. That is 'not pulling your punches' or 'not taking any prisoners'
'shooting from the hip' means that you blurt things out without thinking about the consequences. I cannot think of any circumstances where that's anything other than negative

InfiniteSheldon · 27/09/2017 08:00

GrinGrinGrin I think you'd be a cracking laugh on a night out OP
