To ask if you had a forceps delivery wit 1st baby did it mean the same again for subsequent deliveries?

Had a slightly traumatic birth with my 1st that ended with forceps in theatre as he was stuck and heart rate dropped but everything was fine in the end.
Noone knows what will happen next time but just looking for abit of advice or your experiences if you had forceps with your 1st delivery was the 2nd any easier or did it end the same way?

Good friend had very long drawn out birth (think 36 hours) with her first which ended with ventouse and was reluctant to go to the hospital too early when in labour so ended up having 2nd at home within 2 hours.

Totally different the second and third time! 1st was 24 hours of back to back contractions resulting in episiotomy, 3rd degree tear and stitches and long recovery time. Giant giant headed baby. Baby no 2 came out in 2 pushes after a 30 minute labour - I thought I was having a poo! 3rd was 2 hours labour and a few pushes in a birthing pool. I was sooooo worried beforehand about no2 and honestly it couldn't have been more different. Suspect everything wider up there and I was more relaxed about the whole thing

hertsandessex · 25/09/2017 13:21

First c-section planned in advance. Second nightmare labour and eventually forceps (and still difficult). Third completely natural and very quick :)

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 25/09/2017 13:21

Sorry - 1st was a forceps, c section form signed job

ReachOutAndTouchDave · 25/09/2017 13:26

Utterly hideous forceps-on-the-operating-table delivery for my first. Episiotomy from approximately my forehead around to the back of my fuckin neck, so yeah he's looking after me when I'm old. Grin
My Second and third were born vaginally, one with an epidural, one without. Bit of tearing with both, nothing too bad.

Bippitybopityboo · 25/09/2017 13:38

Wow our 1st babies were definitely little buggers to get out!! Grin

1st baby 27 hour labour, epidural, forceps and episiotomy
2nd baby 1 hour, 1 puff gas & air, tiny tear

theme seems to be don't leave getting to hospital too late for 2nd/3rd etc. unless planning home or roadside birth

EndoplasmicReticulum · 25/09/2017 13:59

My first was induction, which I think led to epidural which then ended up as forceps.

My second I had at home thinking it would go much better that way and I was right.

CreativeMumma · 25/09/2017 14:01

My first dd was forceps, very drawn out labour etc, my second dd was a natural birth in a pool just with gas and air!

Rockandrollwithit · 25/09/2017 14:11

My first was forceps followed by a 3 litre PPH. I opted for an elective c section for my second and it was a dream!

WutheringTights · 25/09/2017 14:17

I had a long and difficult forceps delivery with number one but two and three were very quick and easy, although I did tear badly with number three because I had so much scar tissue and had to be stitched in theatre. Experience in theatre was fine though and my recovery was very quick and easy.

jellypi3 · 25/09/2017 14:17

Ah i'm so glad to read this! My first was similar, forceps and epis due to shoulder dystocia and low heartrate. Second is due in January and I'm dreading the birth a bit, but this has helped ease my mind a bit!

strawberrypenguin · 25/09/2017 14:23

First was forceps ( he was stuck) second wasn’t although I did have an episiotomy again.

GeminiRising · 25/09/2017 15:00

Forceps and eventually ventouse and 5 stitches with my first after an induced labour of over 18 hours.

Second one I had at home (totally planned), no pain relief, no stitches, 4 hour labour. Usually you are much more relaxed second time around.

CesareBorgiasUnicornMask · 25/09/2017 15:12

Not with mine. Both were induced, DS1 took 36 hours and got thoroughly stuck. The ventouse failed and he was eventually hoiked out with forceps as they prepped me for an emcs.

DS2 on the other hand took four hours start to finish, and the midwife barely caught him as he shot out because she didn't believe I could be pushing already Hmm.

Kenworthington · 25/09/2017 15:26

First birth was a traumatic forceps delivery after 2.5 hours of trying to push out a gigantic baby with the cord wrapped round his neck 3 times. Followed by a massive post partum haemorrhage. Oh and an episiotomy repair 6 months later.
Ds2- I had an elective caesarean for the above reasons- I was terrified!
Dc3-vbac, no drugs, all over and done with in about 2 hours!

TJ2503 · 25/09/2017 15:39

Forceps with my first - he was stuck and in distress so it was done there and then on delivery suite rather than theatre as there was no time.

Second one delivered unassisted, he flew out with 3 pushes....

Coincidentally both babies were delivered in the same room on delivery suite 5 year apart - second time was, for the most part, much calmer and considerably quicker.

babybythesea · 25/09/2017 15:49

First was ventouse delivery. Baby tried to emerge with hand above head, superman style, and with cord round neck. Got stuck, it all got quite intense.
Second baby, emerged about an hour after we made it to hospital. No help needed.

Bippitybopityboo · 25/09/2017 15:49

So happy to hear alot of you had far more positive births after your difficult ones

OP posts:
Gubbins · 25/09/2017 15:53

1st was ventouse, 2nd slid out into a birthing pool after about 4 pushes. There was no comparison. Try not to worry and I hope it all goes brilliantly.

ReggaeTramp · 25/09/2017 15:56

Induced with DC1, forceps in theatre, difficult recovery but assured second time I would breathe the baby out. DC2 was two weeks late and I ended up having to be induced again and forceps again. But I seem to be very much in the minority so fingers crossed for you!

Noofly · 25/09/2017 16:00

DS was a forceps delivery in the delivery room. His heart beat plummeted and then vanished. All I'd had for pain was 2 paracetamol (it had been a very quick labour!). Oh my fucking God it hurt!

To make matters worse, they didn't give me any anaesthetic when they stitched me up. Oh my fucking God.

DS was premature so I was hanging about the wards for a while and I was famous. Kept getting staff popping by to see the woman who had a forceps delivery on 2 paracetamol. Grin

DD popped out three years later in another very very fast birth but no problems (and once again, no pain relief but I complained about the previous stitching and they gave me LOADS of anaesthetic that time.)

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 25/09/2017 16:07

First - emergency theatre, forceps, haemmorage, injured baby, PTSD, PND; hideous.

Second - ELCS. Refused to take the risk for me or the baby. Also refused to return to the hospital where I'd had my first. Much better, not without issues but much better nonetheless. No issues with requesting ELCS and had a very understanding medical team.

louise055 · 25/09/2017 16:10

DS1-long labour ending in forceps, really quite traumatic.

Whilst pregnant with DS2 all the midwives and consultants reassured me that 2nd labours are easier and was very unlikely to need them again, that put my mind at rest along with reading threads like this.

DS2- long labour ending in forceps!

Safe to say I'm having an elcs with my third!
