Is it ok to drink water in a gym changing room?

Ok, don't shoot me down for asking about such a trivial matter - I know it's trivial, that's what Mumsnet is for!

My DD 4yrs and I were in the changing room after her swimming lesson today, and she was having a drink of water from a bottle. A gym member who had just entered the changing room, pointed to the 'No eating or drinking' sign;
Lady: Have you seen the sign?
Me: We're not eating.
Lady: No eating OR drinking.
Me: (incredulous 😲) It's only water.
Lady: I didn't put the sign up!
Me: Well, I think she's allowed a drink of water. 😧

At this point I left, but was completely gobsmacked by such an attitude!
I completely understand that they wouldn't want people drinking hot drinks, fizzy drinks and even juice but surely it is perfectly acceptable to drink water in a gym setting? Don't most people need a drink during and after their workouts or swimming, including in the changing room?

What would you have said to her?

And those who say you don't NEED to drink water in the changing rooms clearly aren't regularly exercising.

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 25/09/2017 12:34

Quite right Didntcomeheretofuckspiders

yes we are, so don't try to Police my comments in the way you have here.

existentialmoment · 25/09/2017 12:50

You can disagree all you like. You're still wrong though.

The sign does not refer to water and anyone who thinks it does is a tit. The staff would laugh in your face if you reported someone for drinking water in a gym.

Can people not exercise a little simple logic anymore?

BorisTrumpsHair · 25/09/2017 12:52

I'm with fuckspiders - I'll drink water pretty much anywhere I want too thanks, and doubly so after exercising.

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 25/09/2017 13:00

The staff would laugh in your face if you reported someone for drinking water in a gym.
This

Hissy · 25/09/2017 13:23

I don't think people need to be able to access water constantly.
ha hahahahaha - come train with my squad, Pengggwn

My coach tells us off for NOT drinking ENOUGH water! We genuinely can't get through our swim sets without being properly hydrated.

And a 4 yo WOULD need to drink water after swimming, it's absolutely right that they do.

Bubblebubblepop · 25/09/2017 13:31

It's still not clear if it's a staff member or member of the public?

I suggest put in a compliant when I thought it was a staff member. If it was a member of the public I would've laughed in her face. Entitled little arse.

balsamicbarbara · 25/09/2017 13:40

Such a contrast with the school admissions thread.. over there people who wouldn't report the violator have no morals but people who'd report the violator here are entitled arses Grin

Bubblebubblepop · 25/09/2017 13:54

That's weird. What does drinking water In a changing room have to do with school admissions?

Also, was I on that thread? I feel like I am a different person to the ones on that thread. But maybe not. Maybe we're supposed to have groupthink or something.

Wolfiefan · 25/09/2017 13:55

It's a weird rule.
But the rule says no eating or drinking.
So no eating or drinking.
Wait until you are in an area where it's allowed. You can wait two minutes.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 25/09/2017 13:57

YANBU - Clearly water is different to other sticky drinks and no gym would ban (reasonably) ban it.

Of course she can wait. But who cares if she doesn't? It's such a non issue, you'd have to be a little hitler looking for a row to care.

Wolfiefan · 25/09/2017 14:10

Wouldn't have said anything
I thing it's a stupid rule.
But this place has a no drinking rule. So no drinking. It doesn't say nothing other than water. It says no drinking. Simple.

Bubblebubblepop · 25/09/2017 14:18

Do you follow every rule going wolfie? How boring and inconvenient!

64PooLane · 25/09/2017 14:28

Jeez.

There is a difference between reasonable, thoughtful interpretation of a rule (i.e. an assumption that it doesn't apply to water, because it's a gym/swimming pool changing space and there's water on the floor anyway) and reckless violation of a rule out of sheer anarchic badness. There is a spectrum of how much these things matter. A little child sipping water is not the thin end of some dystopian wedge.

It's not a moral imperative to obey all rules, all the time, without question, because a sign says so.

Penggwn not sure what is going on with you, but you are coming across a bit unhinged as they say on MN.
Maybe take some deep breaths and relax.
Not your gym, not your water, not your monkeys etc.

Wolfiefan · 25/09/2017 14:31

Boring and inconvenient?
Really?
I'm betting this is because of health and safety concerns. I think it's a daft rule. But we don't get to just break rules to be exciting or convenient. Either lobby to change things, don't use the facilities or do as you're told.

BorisTrumpsHair · 25/09/2017 14:32

I bet the sign says "Apart from water" tomorrow Grin
