Is it ok to drink water in a gym changing room?

Ok, don't shoot me down for asking about such a trivial matter - I know it's trivial, that's what Mumsnet is for!

My DD 4yrs and I were in the changing room after her swimming lesson today, and she was having a drink of water from a bottle. A gym member who had just entered the changing room, pointed to the 'No eating or drinking' sign;
Lady: Have you seen the sign?
Me: We're not eating.
Lady: No eating OR drinking.
Me: (incredulous 😲) It's only water.
Lady: I didn't put the sign up!
Me: Well, I think she's allowed a drink of water. 😧

At this point I left, but was completely gobsmacked by such an attitude!
I completely understand that they wouldn't want people drinking hot drinks, fizzy drinks and even juice but surely it is perfectly acceptable to drink water in a gym setting? Don't most people need a drink during and after their workouts or swimming, including in the changing room?

What would you have said to her?

Of course the remark about "second to second access to water" and "If they can't wait 10 minutes you're not giving them enough water in general" is judgemental.

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 25/09/2017 11:36

Besides, as i said before, I really would not be in the least bothered by losing membership in an (imaginary -only in the fantasies of someone with a weird controlling obsession) establishment that took that stance. (even though it's irrelevant to this post and wouldn't ever happen)
So, contrary to a PP's belief, I might well summon up a shrug.

OMG It was you wasn't it Penggwn?
You're the mystery Lady in the changing room.

Oh I see, I thought my remark was obviously a joke.
A joke in response to your comments here.
It didn't occur to me that anyone would actually think I was genuinely suggesting you were involved in the events.
If you really thought I was suggesting that you were the interfering changing room lady then I sincerely apologise.

No, I thought you were being facetious.
I was.
So why did you feel the need to inform me about the poor etiquette of suggesting a poster was involved in the event being posted about?

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 25/09/2017 11:58

Is there a rule that that states I'm not allowed to be facetious?

see, I think that you were trying to use your position of being a more experienced MN poster than I to make me feel that I had said something out of order when in fact, I was just poking fun at your peculiar stance of being so bothered about someone drinking water whilst getting changed after swimming.

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 25/09/2017 12:04

OK, so if someone thinks I'm being rude they can tell me (you already have, earlier on this thread and I'm unscathed so no harm done.)

Oh I see, so You are the one who decides who's in the wrong on AIBU.
And as you know, I wasn't trying to "pretend" you were personally involved.
All I've learned so far is that you're astonishingly condescending.
So it's been an education. But not one I'd thank you for.

DeadGood · 25/09/2017 12:21

What would I have said?

Lady: I didn't put the sign up!
Me: And it's not your job to police it either

Now that's a good response DeadGood
a dead good one actually.

YANBU, she's obviously just someone with issues and best ignored.

It seems obvious that drinking water would be the exception to the general rule. In a gym/swimming pool changing room. Where there's loads of water around anyway from the showers/sinks/dripping hair etc.

I remember once at uni we had a bus driver who would stop the bus if she saw anyone take out a bottle of water, and refuse to move the bus until they put it away. Was glorious when same woman came into the chain restaurant restaurant where I worked and tried to get away with bending the rules there. Bawahaha.

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 25/09/2017 12:30

Penggwn
You asked me if I was new and pointed me to the etiquette of not suggesting someone online was involved in the OP's RL situation, even though you, by your own admission, didn't think that's what I was doing.
Your statement that my view on the OP is "wrong" rather than different from yours and and your "you'll learn" comment were both condescending
and your "not giving your children enough water in general" comment was judgemental.
Now you may think I was rude. You are at liberty to say so and as that's your opinion I'm not in a position to deny it, it's a subjective thing.
But you have been small minded, judgemental, condescending and disingenuous.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 25/09/2017 12:32

You should be able to drink water literally wherever you like. End of. Especially when you have been exercising fgs! You can take a bottle of water into the gym or onto poolside with you so why wouldn't you be able to have a sip in the changing rooms?!
