School lunches provided by Brakes brothers, ok or not?

TheBadTemperedLadybird · 23/09/2017 22:55

Dcs are saying school lunches are horrible and have said so for some time. Their friends agree.

We saw a Brakes Bros lorry leaving school last week. Lunches are £360 a term, private school.

AIBU to expect better? Or is Brakes bros food fine?

I've never even heard of Brakes Bros, what is it?

Queenofthedrivensnow · 23/09/2017 23:00

Is it bread?

Unihorn · 23/09/2017 23:02

Brakes are a catering wholesaler like 3663/Bidvest. They provide meals to thousands of schools. I wouldn't have thought it anything to complain about...

ilovegin112 · 23/09/2017 23:02

Aren't they the lot that supply pubs and things?

exLtEveDallas · 23/09/2017 23:03

How much per meal? £3 or so? Brakes is fine for canteen style food, the are one of the country's biggest suppliers. It's not haute cuisine but there is nothing wrong with it.

Sallylondon · 23/09/2017 23:03

It’s a catering supplier. Does not mean that the school is serving ready meals. They’ll be delivering the ingredients, be that flour, frozen peas, quinoa or turkey twizzlers.

TheBadTemperedLadybird · 23/09/2017 23:04

They supply pubs yes, I'm under the impression they're crap mass caterers but happy to be corrected

I think they supply frozen food, I'm sure I've seen the vans

edwinbear · 23/09/2017 23:04

Don't all kids say school lunches are horrible?

TheBadTemperedLadybird · 23/09/2017 23:05

It's £6 a day I think

Ping food suppliers

calzone · 23/09/2017 23:06

Brakes food is very good.

Unihorn · 23/09/2017 23:06

As PP said, they also supply raw ingredients as well as frozen/pre-prepared vegetables so you'd have no real way of knowing what the school orders.

TheBadTemperedLadybird · 23/09/2017 23:07

it's a private school, there is no choice about lunch so no packed lunches and my children are coming home starving hungry as are my friends kids because they hate the food so don't eat it

Brakes supply most of the pubs and restaurants in the U.K. (And schools and offices!) Yes some is frozen food. Some fresh. They have low end and high end. It's more about what I do with it than where it comes from I reckon!)

AlexanderHamilton · 23/09/2017 23:07

They pretty much supply ready meals that are tarted up a bit with a sprig of fresh parsley.

TheBadTemperedLadybird · 23/09/2017 23:08

So it could be raw veg and ingredients they're providing? Ok.

OP posts:
TheBadTemperedLadybird · 23/09/2017 23:09

Alexanderhamilton that's what I thought

My restaurant uses Bidvest so I can't confirm that for sure but we buy fresh veg from them as well as some frozen. I assume Brakes are similar.

AliMonkey · 23/09/2017 23:10

They are simply wholesalers. Yes they can provide meals but also ingredients. It's the equivalent of you getting a Tesco delivery. If the food is rubbish then either the cooks are rubbish or they are mediocre cooks buying cheap ingredients. Brakes delivers to our school and the meals vary from great to yucky according to my kids - and that is mainly just there are certain meals they wouldn't like whoever cooked it! It's never going to be high class food but is normal mass catering.

MrsPringles · 23/09/2017 23:12

Brakes are decent.

I work in food service specifically the education sector so am familiar with the market Smile

SparklyUnicornPoo · 23/09/2017 23:12

They supply hotels as well. Some of their food is nice, some isn't, rather depends what the school are ordering from them and what the cook is like (it is frozen but even frozen food can be under/over heated or cold by the time the kids get it)

Unihorn · 23/09/2017 23:12

If you want more reassurance you can view all of their products on their website.

PinkHeart5913 · 23/09/2017 23:14

A quick look at there website shows fresh products etc as well as frozen. And I know they do supply for some big chains so I can't see the food being awful or these chains wouldn't be ordering from them would they.

Fairylea · 23/09/2017 23:15

Brakes supply so many food chains and restaurants, as well as many schools. They can provide just about anything you can think of - fresh or processed! They're just like a very large, wholesale supermarket really!
