To think that saying Idris Elba isn't suitable to play Bond because he's 'too street'...

... is actually a racist comment, which - however 'jokingly' said - is absolutely not an appropriate thing to say in an office environment?

I'm on week two of a new position and between this kind of thing and other dodgy goings-on am debating whether to hand my notice in.

WIBU to mention my discomfort to line manager (who heard whole thing, laughed along etc.) or alternatively to just cut and run? Am I being a bit sensitive?

Andylion No, you're right - Bernie Casey played Felix Leiter in not a proper Bond film Never say never again. 👍

Andylion · 22/09/2017 15:19

Agh! Thank you, Uncle Jamie. I knew it was a Connery Bond, but always (mercifully) forget about that one.

BabychamSocialist · 22/09/2017 15:24

They also had a Black Felix Leiter in the Daniel Craig films didn't they? It was the guy who's in Westworld now (I'm useless with names).

I'm not sure if I've ever seen Never Say Never Again but it rings a bell. Is that the one where he has a dodgy wig that outacts Connery at points?

IHateUncleJamie · 22/09/2017 16:10

Yes, Jeffrey Wright; we were talking about him a few posts ago. Love him as Felix.

In the books James Bond holds (or held) the rank of Commander RN, which an officer would be unlikely to reach (in peace time) much before the age of 37. Given that Fleming wrote the first stories in 1950s, we would probably assume he could be a bit younger (war is good for early promotions) so any new Bond should be about mid-30s.

DC is now past it; Idris Elba is yummy enough, but also too old. At one stage, I'd have nominated Damien Lewis, as he's posh enough but he's getting on a bit too. I can't think of any young British lead actors who fit the bill; most are not quite macho enough because that has become the fashionable trope.

(Apologies if you've seen this view endlessly repeated; it didn't seem like a thread that had to be read attentively. And the OP is over-reacting big time if considering it a resigning issue.)

@BabychamSocialist , Never Say Never Again is the one Connery did in the 80s, the same year Moore did Octopussy. It wasn't an official Bond movie, but the screenwriter who did Thunderball still had the rights, (or something). I got the impression that they were trying to subvert or spoof the Bond films, (either that, or they had never heard of him!). He introduces himself as "James" for goodness sake.

It also starred Kim Basinger who does this painful dance sequence, very 80s.

I only like the (early) Connery Bond films, (and none of the Moore ones) as I liked the old fashioned look and the European settings. I think Diamonds are Forever is tacky because so much of it takes place in Vegas.

TBH I wish the Bond franchise would just shrivel and die, even with recent attempts at paying lipservice to equality they're irritatingly chauvenistic to watch.
However, Pierce Brosnan is beautiful.

A black woman playing Bond would be the only comfort for me.

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 22/09/2017 18:18

Patterson Joseph would probably look the part but I can't separate him from "Johnson" in Peep show.

Andylion · 22/09/2017 20:00

I know what you mean, DrKrogers, but he's got range.

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 23/09/2017 09:32

yes Andylion
Good point.
I do like him and he's got a great face/ presence.

See? Now I'm getting interested in who's playing Bond and I really shouldn't care.

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 23/09/2017 09:35

Or, Morris Chestnut. He defintiely has presence and he is unarguably very handsome.
