To ask how long it been since you've used public transport?

After a thread on here over change from bus fares got very heated, a couple of people said they'd not used buses (and possibly other forms of public transport) for over 10 years.

I find it fairly incredible that you can go so long without going on a bus or use other forms - okay I get that it may be months if you commute by car/bike or walk, but surely most people will make an occasional trip by bus or train across the course of a year for a night out or on a day trip or whatever?

Depends where you lived. We lived in a village and both my parents went to the nearest town to work.
As I too went there, driving at the age of 17, having bought my own car from Saturday jobs, to live out my nightclubbing days. Grin

So no, not particularly wealthy or affluent.
Driving was a necessity, freedom wise - and I still love it and do not find it stressful at all, which a pp mentioned.

Oblomov17 · 19/09/2017 19:17

Oh yes. That was you OP.
I love driving. The freedom. London to Cornwall, up to Manchester. No problem to me. M25? Love it.

I like trains and tubes and buses aswell.

But some of us like driving. I'd use it as my preferred transportation, every time.

Twinkie1 · 19/09/2017 19:17

Last week😁. Ordinarily I would use a train about twice a year but I went on a bus, train and underground train all in ins day last week!

C0untDucku1a · 19/09/2017 19:20

I went on a plane in February. But no train in four years and no bus in Two years.

IfNot · 19/09/2017 19:25

Even though buses are pretty regular into town centre, it's still cheaper to park in carparks there than a return ticket on the bus
Same here. Hence the horrendous traffic. The UK really needs to sorthe out public transport, but where i live only the old and the poor use it and noone cares about them..

Rudedog · 19/09/2017 19:37

To town and back costs me £3.80 on the bus

I can park for £1 or for free.

If there is more than one of you a taxi is cheaper than the bus

13bastards · 19/09/2017 19:39

Not used a bus for months.
Train, once a week or so.

LBOCS2 · 19/09/2017 19:39

Sunday, bus then train then bus to a restaurant in the City. And before that was Friday.

I mostly use public transport so I can drink Blush Plus I'm dreadful at remembering to pay the congestion charge so it costs me an awful lot to drive into London.

spidey66 · 19/09/2017 19:41

Yesterday. I either cycle or get the train to work. Today it was the bike's turn.

lljkk · 19/09/2017 19:46

Almost all workdays. Am not in London.
Don't like driving the 17 miles. OMG. Crazy overtaking by morning commuters, crazy lane elbowing by crated commuters in evening.

ThisIsntMyUsualName · 19/09/2017 19:49

I haven't used a bus or maybe a decade. I live rurally and by the time I got the bus into the nearest town I will have missed the only one that returns. I get the train into London 3-4 times a year though.

Amanduh · 19/09/2017 19:54

Tube and dlr as often as I can, I love them ha

Crunchymum · 19/09/2017 19:56

Friday for me. I walk to work but get the bus home (sometimes I walk home too but I'm pregnant and tired!!)

LoniceraJaponica · 19/09/2017 20:02

I very rarely use buses as where we live they are not very frequent. I tend to use trains and trams reasonably frequently though, or walk, cycle or drive.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 19/09/2017 20:05

I last went on a train and tube about a month ago. Last time I used a bus was more like 5/6 years ago.

I only use the train and tube as went into London for a day in the holidays with the kids, but London is the only place I go by train.

In my childhood I don't think I can ever remember my parents using the bus and the train was a very rare occasional trip into Manchester (nearest city to home town). If you live somewhere outside of a city, don't commute in for work and own a car, why would you use public transport?

Hullygully · 19/09/2017 20:06

32 years. I don't like the seat covers.

opinionatedfreak · 19/09/2017 20:06

I don't have a car. I walk to work (mostly) and am otherwise dependent on public transport or uber.

I got a bus home from work yesterday as I finished late so I was feeling a bit sorry for myself and it was raining.

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 19/09/2017 20:06

At least 15 years.

I drive, I have a car - why would I use public transportation?

I did look once into getting a bus/train to work - I would have needed 3 buses from my house to the station (that's with walking over a mile to the bus stop) the train (which takes 30 mins longer than driving) and another 2 buses to get to work taking me over 3.5 hours, and would only be at work for 2 hours max as the bus/train timetables meant if I didn't catch the 4.40 train I wouldn't be able to get home. That little lot would have cost me about £50/70 a day. Took me 30-35 mins to drive and £5/6 in fuel if that.

I'd happily drive Grin

InvisibleKittenAttack · 19/09/2017 20:07

Oh and I was born in the 70s, if you had 2 working parents working outside of city centre locations, 2 cars was common.

SleepingStandingUp · 19/09/2017 20:07

6 hours

Cadenza1818 · 19/09/2017 20:08

I haven't used bus for 2years despite a regular service from my road. I'd love to but it costs £10 for returns for me n kids for a 1.5 mile journey onto town. I can drive for cheaper than that! And walk almost as quick!

TwatteryFlowers · 19/09/2017 20:36

I can't remember. I think it was may half term holidays and ds and I went into Leeds on the train. He lost his ticket and I had to buy another one. I will be using the bus on Monday to go into the city again because I hate driving there and parking costs an arm and a leg. I can't remember how much it will cost but I'm guessing about a fiver!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 19/09/2017 20:42

About 3 hours ago - got a bus from the office to the station and then train home. Did the reverse this morning on way into London. I don't like getting the tube but I love London buses, they are so clean compared to local services. I always get the strange smelly bus wanker sat next to me on my local service.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 19/09/2017 20:43

I got the train in the Birmingham maybe 4 months ago - it's 20 minutes away but so much better on the train than driving. I do that maybe 4 times a year.. I don't use public transport otherwise really and last got a bus maybe 5 years ago. It was winter and the sweaty stench on the bus and all the bacteria laden breath condensation streaming down all the windows was awful.

I lived in London for 5 years and the tube was acceptable but ultimately I bloody love my car!

treaclesoda · 19/09/2017 20:46

If you and your friends wanted a trip out to a nearby town, how did you get there? We were off all over the place from about the age of 12/13.

Someone's parents would probably have taken us if we wanted to go somewhere. I lived in a fairly large town but there wasn't really any sort of bus service that would have enabled us to take ourselves off to other places without adult input, and tbh even if there was, I can't imagine having been allowed the freedom to do it anyway.
