To ask how long it been since you've used public transport?

After a thread on here over change from bus fares got very heated, a couple of people said they'd not used buses (and possibly other forms of public transport) for over 10 years.

I find it fairly incredible that you can go so long without going on a bus or use other forms - okay I get that it may be months if you commute by car/bike or walk, but surely most people will make an occasional trip by bus or train across the course of a year for a night out or on a day trip or whatever?

Since I moved to London its been everyday. The four years prior to that I drove and used PT maybe every few months when I needed to catch a train a few hundred miles

ijustwannadance · 19/09/2017 17:35

In the last 10 years, I have been on a bus once. I stupidly volunteered to be a parent helper on a school trip. Was raining and the old happy als bus stunk of stale fags.

Used to get train every day on commute to work but now maybe twice a year if that.

Alittlebitofthis · 19/09/2017 17:35

Last month I think. My ds likes the bus so in the holidays we went into town on it a couple of times.

astoundedgoat · 19/09/2017 17:36

Today at lunchtime. I'm in London and v close to a useful tube station and I'm too nervous to cycle in London traffic. There are very useful buses around here too.

We've never owned a car - always lived in cities.

Hulababy · 19/09/2017 17:37

Train - 3 weeks or so ago to take my nieces to the seaside when I was looking after them in the summer holidays

Plane - beginning of summer holidays

Bus - couple of months of so ago I think; I don't use it often. No direct route to work and I have working permit anyway, when we go to town dh has a parking permit or I can get reduced parking from his firm so cheaper than bus. So it's an occasional thing - maybe once every 2-3 months max.

RhiWrites · 19/09/2017 17:39

Sunday took the bus back from the city centre. I used to take the bus every day but I'm on a health and fitness initiative now so walking more.

We are in a cycling city so lots of sustainable and public transport options here though.

TeachesOfPeaches · 19/09/2017 17:39

Several times everyday

RaininSummer · 19/09/2017 17:41

Last on a bus about ten years ago when I had to leave my car at a the garage. Used a trwqin two years ago and again this year as daughter has moved to London but prior to that was over twenty years ago.

allegretto · 19/09/2017 17:42

Currently on the bus - fourth bus journey today. I have a season ticket and a car. I prefer the bus!

RaininSummer · 19/09/2017 17:43

I would like to use trains more but its so damn expensive. I find it rather discriminatory that I can't buy a rail card as I am over 25 and under 60.

PeterBlue · 19/09/2017 17:43

Must be 20 years since I used a bus. Took a train last week. Trains go to both our nearby big towns and in half the time the bus takes. Local bus services are the "one out in the morning and one back in the afternoon" variety.

Schroedingerscatagain · 19/09/2017 17:43

Passed my driving test aged 18, 30 years ago at the time I worked shifts so needed a car as bus services were unreliable

In my twenties I occasionally went to London and used the tube but I've never caught a bus or train since as I drive ( disabled now)

So 20 years ish for a train and 30 years for a bus, god I feel old Confused

corythatwas · 19/09/2017 17:45

5 minutes. We have a car but I don't drive and dh only drives if there is no alternative.

bananafish81 · 19/09/2017 17:47

I've not driven a car in well over 3 years

We live in central London and don't own a car

Always been easier to get a train & taxi when going out of London - have a Zipcar membership that I pay £60 a year for in case we want to hire a car for a few hours / days. Driving was essential where I grew up in Manchester suburbs and getting my licence aged 17 unlocked freedom. I did have a car in London but sold it because I was paying tax and residents parking and MOT for a car I never used. The only time I drive it was to stop the battery going flat!!

Use tube or bus every day unless I'm having a lazy Sunday and just staying at home / mooching around our neighbourhood

bananafish81 · 19/09/2017 17:50

To answer the OP directly I'm currently on the tube right now, so less than 10 seconds since I last used public transport!

balsamicbarbara · 19/09/2017 17:52

The last time I went on a bus I had a massive panic attack the whole time so I avoid them at all costs now. Was a few years back.

isittheholidaysyet · 19/09/2017 17:52

Train and tube, last October half term when we had a day trip from DSis's house to London.

Bus, last summer, from my parents house to the city (20miles). I knew parking was shocking near to where I was going.

MadisonMontgomery · 19/09/2017 17:53

Years ago - public transport is so inconvenient where I live it isn't worth bothering.

Tumbleweed101 · 19/09/2017 17:55

Personally the last time was March on a visit to London (always use public transport there). Occasionally use park and ride bus into Cambridge city centre. Rest of time I use the car as buses are infrequent and expensive.

Dd uses bus for college. They are a nightmare. Unreliable and expensive. She's already taking driving lessons otherwise job opportunities will be low when she finishes college.

JsOtherHalf · 19/09/2017 17:55

Summer half term.
Trip to a nearby city with DS and a couple of friends. Bus and train.
Was cheaper and quicker than my car and parking, but that was because it was a special off peak family ticket.

Otherwise, no. Even though buses are pretty regular into town centre, it's still cheaper to park in carparks there than a return ticket on the bus.

RidiculousDiversion · 19/09/2017 17:58

Lunchtime - hopped on the bus home instead of walking, as I had heavy shopping. I get the bus, tube or tram pretty much every day - probably drive about twice a month. That's one of the things I love about living in London Grin

mummyretired · 19/09/2017 17:58

Bus, Yesterday. Train, two weeks ago and again tomorrow -- so convenient.

piglet81 · 19/09/2017 18:00

On a train right now. I have a driving licence but have always lived in London and never had a car. I'm petrified of driving and don't even like being a car passenger.

ThePants999 · 19/09/2017 18:01

It's definitely been months. Possible it's been a year.

BlackThumb · 19/09/2017 18:02

Waiting for the tube...
