To think cats can't "stand"?!

CatsCantStand · 19/09/2017 08:37

NC as I will show this to DH to vindicate my rightness Grin

I just asked DH where the cat was - "she's standing at the front gate" apparently Hmm

Is it just me, or can cats not actually stand? Only people with two legs can stand, surely. Cats can't stand. DH is clearly BU.

What would we say instead of standing, though?

Don't let me down MNers. Cats can't stand. Or can they?

Um, if it's not sat or lying down then it's... wha? If it isn't standing? What would you call it?Confused

n0ne · 19/09/2017 10:39

I actually think YANBU. Being upright on four legs doesn't feel like standing to me. I'd say the cat is by the front gate, thus avoiding the whole 'standing' issue.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 19/09/2017 10:39

Dungarees are for toddlers and painters Grin

wanderings · 19/09/2017 10:40

Of course cats "stand" on four legs. Four legs good, two legs bad. My younger cat sometimes stands on two legs (usually when he's been pestering our older cat, who has swiped at him).

Mind you, I remember thinking as a child it was not right that an animals "back" was typically on top of the animal, it's not where our back is.

And what about "the train now standing at platform 1". There it is, standing on its two legs.

And at the football match, where do you go to sit down? The "stand"!

And here's a childhood feline enigma: as a child, I used to argue against the existence of God (I must have been reading MN before it was invented). My very Christian aunt said: "but isn't it clever that a cat has holes in its fur, just where its eyes are?"

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 19/09/2017 10:47

Ha ha ha, just had a hilarious phone conversation with the OP who did indeed confirm my belief that the Op is my DSis.
I only realised after I had posted agreeing with her. And cats have arms. btw.
Ha ha DSis. You do make me laugh.

StarHeartDiamond · 19/09/2017 10:49

Wandering- not sure how a cat having holes in its fur where it's eyes are is related to Christianity! Grin Surely it's still just down to species development?!

NC4now · 19/09/2017 10:50

Mine's standing on his four fat paws right now. OP, you're bonkers 😂

Viserion · 19/09/2017 10:51

Star it's the Creationist view, that eyes could never have evolved like that, that there has to be an all powerful designer....

CatsCantStand · 19/09/2017 10:58

I'm still amazed that I was "outed" simply by displaying stupidity re cats and mentioning dungarees - that could be quite hurtful really Grin

Thank you cunt you don't mind if I call you that, do you Wink

I don't get the God and eye thing either Grin

Dungarees are fine but you must channel your inner minion while wearing them!

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 19/09/2017 11:03

I recognised your particular strain of bonkers, DSis.
Not too dissimiliar to my own.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 19/09/2017 11:05

And you may call me Cunt as we're famalamadingdong.GrinGrinGrin

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 19/09/2017 11:08

I like dungarees! I wish I had some.

SecretNutellaFix · 19/09/2017 11:15

If she's not standing what is she doing? Hovering?

wanderings · 19/09/2017 11:16

As for the cats and holes in its fur thing: this thread reminded me very strongly of that memory from childhood. (Disclaimer, I don't want to turn this lovely funny thread into a creationism debate as they get very heated on MN, blah blah blah), but some of us will know from school a song with the following lines, familiar to some children of the 1980s and before:

"Who put the colours in the rainbow?
It surely can't be chance!"

Now change the first line to "who put the holes in the cat's fur". Is it chance that they're in the right place so the cat can see? I'm not sure why my aunt spoke of cats particularly, she didn't have any herself. I don't think we ever agreed on that debate! I don't know if she thought cats stood on four legs either.

PerkingFaintly · 19/09/2017 11:25

I have a minibus, and I tell the kids to get in the bus, but if we're going on a service bus, I'd say to get on the bus.

I've just tried that out with "plane", and you know what, it does make sense.

In my head, "on" is for a service, "in" is a description of a physical object.

"I had to get home urgently when DH was ill, so I got on a plane..." = commercial plane service that was flying anyway.

"I had to get home urgently when DH was ill, so I got in a plane..." suggests the physical object, and I have control of it and caused it to travel (maybe it's mine or I chartered it).

Or is it just me that thinks this?

Firesuit · 19/09/2017 11:26

just how many threads & RL conversations have you managed to work that phrase into over the last 15 years

Nowhere near as many as I would have liked...

I can hear it now....

I am just going to run to the post office

"talking of running........."

I'm not sure I've used that tenuous an opportunity, but I've definitely fantasized about using one like that.

Oldraver · 19/09/2017 11:29

My cat 'Meercats'..usually at the front window so he can see out better, The fool could just get on the windowsill

I'm picturing this....

To think cats can't "stand"?!
Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/09/2017 12:27

Following this thread I spoke to my DH who has always maintained that cats are standing when they have their bums on the ground (what I think is sitting up). I asked what it's called when they have all four paws on the ground and the answer came back - 'walking'.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/09/2017 12:30

My cats will sometimes stand on their two back legs.

WorkingClassHeroine · 19/09/2017 12:31

My dog occasionally stands on her front 2 legs to do a wee on a very specific spot.

Viserion · 19/09/2017 12:48

Grumpy - ask him what it is called if they are stationary with all 4 paws on the ground. These are important questions which cannot remain unanswered on this thread!

CatsCantStand · 19/09/2017 13:02

Donttouch it's like you're in my house Shock
