To think cats can't "stand"?!

NC as I will show this to DH to vindicate my rightness Grin

I just asked DH where the cat was - "she's standing at the front gate" apparently Hmm

Is it just me, or can cats not actually stand? Only people with two legs can stand, surely. Cats can't stand. DH is clearly BU.

What would we say instead of standing, though?

Don't let me down MNers. Cats can't stand. Or can they?

Waiting at the gate
Hovering at the gate
flouncing at the gate

Or possibly just standing Grin

loaferloveforyou · 19/09/2017 08:52

Loitering at the gate maybe?

ShowMePotatoSalad · 19/09/2017 08:52

So in exchange for the word "standing", what word would you use?

CatsCantStand · 19/09/2017 08:53

Right I have to go out now

No chance I am showing this to DH btw GrinI might go and ask Netmums. "Your cat your rules hon"

I hate you all.

You're being ridiculous, if anything it is standing on two legs that should be called something different.

naomi83mother · 19/09/2017 08:58

This is bloody hilarious this thread

GreatFuckability · 19/09/2017 09:00

I fucking love you OP.

ChasedByBees · 19/09/2017 09:01

You don't need another word because the word is STANDING.

Pacificplaza · 19/09/2017 09:02

Please keep this name OP

minniemummy0 · 19/09/2017 09:09

Hmm I thought you were crazy, but then I imagined if we stood like a cat. We wouldn't say we were standing, would we? We would be "on all fours". So I vote the cat was on all fours at the gate, just to be devils advocate.

TableMirror · 19/09/2017 09:11

You're correct. Cats do not stand.

They hover 2 imperceptible millimetres above the floor radiating evil.

picklemepopcorn · 19/09/2017 09:16

I wonder what cows do when it isn't raining?

tabulahrasa · 19/09/2017 09:18

"We would be "on all fours""

Because we'd be using our other limbs...cats only have legs...

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 19/09/2017 09:19

Thinking about it maybe cats just lurk rather than stand or possibly teleport as I am always turning around and falling over a cat.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 19/09/2017 09:21

minniemummy0 - we'd be on our hands and knees. You wouldn't say an animal was on their hands and knees!

steppemum · 19/09/2017 09:24

Eleanor - that isn't a cat, it is a penguin Grin

sorry OP.
stand - on legs
sit - on bum
lie - on tummy

of course cat is standing.

Although, come to think of it, a cat is rarely just standing, it slways has an ulterior motive, so
cat is begging at front gate,
cat is posing at front gate
cat is watching out for dog at front gate

etc

onalongsabbatical · 19/09/2017 09:26

Look at that table standing over there - on its four legs!

SarahSellsSeashells · 19/09/2017 09:26

Oh god. This has made my morning. I love you OP.

I used to refer to a cat's front legs as its "arms". Didn't realise how stupid that sounded until I said it in front of someone who wet themselves laughing.

Nancy91 · 19/09/2017 09:33

This thread is awesome Grin

Firesuit · 19/09/2017 09:33

On a related note, four-legged animals can have more gaits than us two-legged ones. We walk or run. (Well we can also hop and skip, but those are silly, so don't count.) A horse can walk, trot, canter or gallop. (I think that's all, not a horse expert.) I wonder if there's a formula that relates number of useful gaits to number of available legs. Could a six-legged mutant horse have more gaits than a four-legged one?

FeelingAggrieved · 19/09/2017 09:37

Of course they are standing! It's not restricted for those with two legs!

Firesuit · 19/09/2017 09:40

And although almost everyone here can run, I bet I'm virtually the only person here who can define what running is without consulting google.

"Running is a form of bipedal locomotion that employs ballistic flight phases to obtain high speed."

I read (something like) that in the caption to a photo in a robotics journal I was browsing in the university maths library, 35 years ago. For some reason I found it hilarious, and it stuck in my mind.
