Where to find weekend day or evening work ?

WeekendWork · 18/09/2017 23:08

I am a SAHM who needs to earn some money for school trips. Child care would equal wage during the week, so looking for weekend day or weekend night work.

I have had a wide range of jobs pre children. However I now have a bowel illness which leads to times when I have to get up and run to the toilet and may be some time in the bathroom, especially if I need to clean up.

Sometimes I am very bad (especially early mornings) and from time to time when I might have to stay home for a couple of days.

Sometimes I am fine. But I have no idea when I will start to be unwell again.

Therefore any job which does not give me unlimited no notice required (I often only get under a minute urgency) access to a free toilet would be unsuitable.

I need a drop and go type job.

Any ideas what jobs might be suitable for me and where I could start looking ?

I am a SAHM and have chosen not to work for now. I have Crohn's. I can't see many companies wanting to employ you sadly even though they aren't supposed to discriminate.

Withhindsight · 18/09/2017 23:36

Working from home, probably admin typing or inputting/out of hours call handling. So many firms have homeworkers now. What about your old roles/contacts? Lots of jobs are broken down into various tasks now, perhaps some of what you did before can be done from a pc/ phone at home using your experience/ expertise.

I am struggling to think of a suitable type of work too. I think of all the jobs I have done in the past and I doubt any of them would be convenient with my current illness.

But I need to find some work to earn money.

I have a laptop and very good administration skills. Not very good on the phone but with my hearing aid in and assuming my tinatus is not too bad that day...I can carry out phone calls. However I may have to hang up at a moments notice if I need the toilet.

Maybe data entry could work. I am a two finger typer but very accurate and great with spreadsheeta and databases.

How about jobs like freelance copywriting and digital marketing, where you work from home? Companies like Quill recruit for roles like this on a rolling basis.

WeekendWork · 18/09/2017 23:53

Freelance sounds great. Off to have a Google.

If you live near a venue that hosts concerts and the like they are always looking staff. Agency called Alchemy looks after them here for the waterfront and SSE in Belfast. You can pick and chose your shits usually.

Pretty sure Alchemy are over in Blighty too.

How qualified are you? If you have a degree and/ or suitable experience then you can almost certainly write web content . It's just a matter of applying to enough people - keep on asking , even if they are not advertising for jobs

Dixiestampsagain · 19/09/2017 00:06

Haha, brilliant typo! I'm looking for something similar. I used to work full time but since a serious accident my health is really 'unreliable' and I have a number or conditions that are very unpredictable- I'd love something I could do from home like copywriting, it's just knowing how to 'break into it'.

WeekendWork · 19/09/2017 00:06

Lol :)

Really couldn't have been a worse autocorrect

WeekendWork · 19/09/2017 00:12

I have a degree in computer programming.

Early work was service based in pubs, clubs and hotels.

Previously worked as contract manager completing responses to invitations to tender to gain work for an engineering firm.

I also worked as an senior information manager in the NHS for several years. Trained in Prince and ran a couple of related projects.

Then spend 10 years at home raising my kids. Before getting ill a few years back.

No worries EamonnWright. It made me laugh and with my current health issues, I need to laugh :)

The work in some venues is 80% hanging about doing nothing and serving drink 15 mins before and at the interval so it would suit you.

I done it for a while when I had to leave my job when I got the weans.

Money isn't great right enough!

WeekendWork · 19/09/2017 06:35

Don't think venue work would suit, as if I needed to go to the bathroom in the break. I could be gone all the time I was needed.

Even supermarket job is not compatible. I couldn't stack shelves as I would be too far from the toilets (I have problems just doing our own shopping)

I couldn't work in a bar or any kind of customer facing role as I wouldn't have time to wait for a replacement staff member to take my toilet break.

An understanding office might work but I can't think of any local offices open at weekend.

I think so far the best idea is freelance work...I will look into anything homebased which isn't purely phone based (as I don't want to be hanging up on people)

It is really hard to explain how I feel at times. It is like having an unpredictable stomach bug that turns up randomly and staya varying length of time.

Hi, I have worked from home for 15 years. Not time critical, easy to pick up/put down, leave the house for school runs etc/

I sell stuff on ebay and Amazon. Very profitable.

Nuttynoo · 19/09/2017 06:47

Sorry to burst your bubble but nobody's going to employ a computer programmer just for weekends. Your best bet is to get properly diagnosed with a condition, apply for part time (but not weekend) office work and then after showing your mettle apply to go weekends only. When you're in a single office it's often easier to get loo breaks - I have severe IBD worse in the morning, but I stay a bit later to even up the hour I spend on my poo :D

WeekendWork · 19/09/2017 06:58

I do have an official diagnosis, I take 49 pills a week (7 per day) which allows me to leave the house on good days but does not cure me.

My condition is lifelong, so I just have to suck it up and get on with things.

A part time week job would work if :-

: it isn't too far away from home whilst driving. I can't travel via public transports on bad days.

: either extremely well paid to cover several x before/after/holiday clubs...OR is 9.30am till 3pm, term time only.

As my DH works long shifts and can not do any of the childcare during the week, which is why I am thinking of working at weekends when he is home.

Why not? Freelance jobs you do when the time suits. There is plenty work for web design for local businesses.
My friend develops web sites and is snowed under with work.

WeekendWork · 19/09/2017 07:00

Cailleach666, what do you sell on eBay ? Sounds interesting.

OP posts:
WeekendWork · 19/09/2017 07:02

I wonder how good you have to be at Web design to get work freelance?

I can build basic websites and databases, spreadsheets. I can display data from multiple sources using crystal reports etc.

OP, I have sold different types of things over the years, second hand books, vintage clothing.

I now make and sell craft items. I work around 15 hours a week and earn more then my OH who works full time.

WeekendWork · 19/09/2017 07:08

Oh I don't have anything like that to sell.

I do like doing crafty things as a hobby but nothing that would sell on eBay. :(
