Where to find weekend day or evening work ?

WeekendWork · 18/09/2017 23:08

I am a SAHM who needs to earn some money for school trips. Child care would equal wage during the week, so looking for weekend day or weekend night work.

I have had a wide range of jobs pre children. However I now have a bowel illness which leads to times when I have to get up and run to the toilet and may be some time in the bathroom, especially if I need to clean up.

Sometimes I am very bad (especially early mornings) and from time to time when I might have to stay home for a couple of days.

Sometimes I am fine. But I have no idea when I will start to be unwell again.

Therefore any job which does not give me unlimited no notice required (I often only get under a minute urgency) access to a free toilet would be unsuitable.

I need a drop and go type job.

Any ideas what jobs might be suitable for me and where I could start looking ?

I wonder if any local businesses might like an ad hoc 9.30am to 3pm administration person. Might be worth a few flyers.

ironing service? You could advertise a local area pick up-drop off ironing service.

Did you write the full copy for the tender responses? If so freelance bid writer would be perfect. I've been a bid manager and in terms of transferrable skills, you need to be very organised, good at working to a deadline, have an engaging writing style and have some project management skills. Freelance business copywriter? Virtual PA even?

If you're working from home you will need to make sure you have a suitable space to work in where you can't be disturbed.

OP I don't know anything about web design, but I know there is a good potential there.
For a while I was in working with our local Business Development office, writing copy for trade leaflets etc.- that could easily have become my mainstay if my craft stuff wasn't so lucrative.

Loads of small businesses have a need for a simple web site, just as a go to place for information. Have a look at local competitors, find out if there is a need in your area.
The advantage is minimal set up costs for you too.

Found it. The week one would be even better if I can set my own hours.

I know you've ruled out working in a supermarket but have you considered a smaller one? I worked in a Tesco Express so they're small, it was 6 aisles and to get from the furthest point in the store to the staff toilet was about a 20 second walk if that. I also found they're quite supportive of medical problems and the hours were great to fit around kids and family.

WeekendWork · 19/09/2017 07:31

Did you write the full copy for the tender responses? Yes.

Freelance bid writer sounds good. Will Google opportunities.

Fruit. Smaller shop would be fine, as long as I could literally stop and run ti the toilet with no notice and no getting into trouble for doing so. I did shop as a girl and it use to be the case that you had to wait for another member of staff to relief you before having a toilet break and I couldn't do that anymore.

I could try asking at a small shop and see how flexible they could be ?

Could you look out for jobs in School offices? As then you'd get the term-time you require and it'd only be school hours and I'm sure you'd be able to leave quickly without too much disruption to everyone else.

WeekendWork · 19/09/2017 07:58

Yes, if a job opens up at my kids school, I will definitely apply. However no vacancies atm, it has been the same staff in the office for the past ten years...so someone might leave soon.

I couldn't drop my kids at this school and make it to the next school in regular office hours. Though I might ring the next nearest school and see if they have any paperwork/filing which I could help with.

Still leaning to freelance home based work as the most convenient for me. Especially when I feel unwell.

Better write a cv and get applying. :)

I hope you find something that suits, but make sure you are putting your needs on a level peg with everyone else's in the family Flowers . I have a colleague who has the same condition and she has made me aware of how disabling it is. Good luck.

WeekendWork · 19/09/2017 08:20

Thanks Neon. Most people have no idea and think it is a case of visiting a toilet a couple of times a day more than normal folks.

Where as in reality this illness limits me everyday in many different ways. I wouldn't wish it on my worse enemy. :(

Not sure what you mean re. Family needs. We simply need more money than DH brings in. I have to try.

Hi weekend, I'm a freelancer, work from home. With your background and skills I'd definitely be exploring the digital marketing world. Are you up to speed with things like meta tagging and localisation on websites for SEO? Keywords and google analytics? This is the sort of work which lots of companies use freelancers for - optimising their website initially, then monitoring it on an ongoing basis. (This isn't my bag, I am more content writing so only understand the basics and usually come in after the first SEO is done and write blogs/news stories).

There are websites like People Per Hour where you can pitch for jobs - there is a lot of dross on there and people wanting the moon on a stick for £2 an hour, but there's good stuff too. I've been working on there for years and now hardly bid on anything, people approach me instead. Join local business networking groups, put the word out that you can help with digital marketing, set up your own social media and blow your own trumpet.

Good luck! I love freelancing and would never go back to a "proper job".

I'm a SAHM and I have crohn's. I work behind a bar two nights a week buy they're very laid back and if I needed to go home early or leg it to the loo they'd be fine. I also minute meetings. The meetings themselves would be a problem if I had urgency or a flare up but the typing up I can do at home in my pj's so that really helps. Tbh I'm stressed trying to make time for everything but coping for now!

memememe · 19/09/2017 09:58

what about joining a babysitting agency? especially at this time of year there are loads of jobs and you can get paid £100 a week just for 2 babysits. obviously you will be near a toilet!

WeekendWork · 19/09/2017 11:09

Added babysitting to my list. Though I expet DH to strongly object to having to stay in parenting our kids on his own every weekend night but needs must.

Not adding minuting meetings. I am hard of hearing and have to rely on lipreading at times. A noisy meeting would be a nightmare situation for me.

My interpretation of the minutes might be amusing but I doubt they will be accurate !

What about Testing as a computer programmer. Lots of it can be done from home.

Also have you looked at claiming PIP for your bowel issues. I will post a link to the appropriate guide.

MynewnameisKy · 19/09/2017 11:17

PIP Guide for bowel issues

I claimed PIP for a few years until I got my Colitis under control. Now back in my career and paying tax. This is what it's for. Flowers

MynewnameisKy · 19/09/2017 11:21

I should add if you have a diagnosis of Crohn's or Colitis it's considered a disability under the equality legislation in the workplace.

Although it's much easier to try to find a job that fits with your illness.

Also push to get diagnosis/ treatment until you get it in under control. It took me years but thankfully in employment now and no major issues.
