To ask about the awful jewellry I keep seeing these bright young things wearing?

I'm 45 and out of touch admittedly but I keep seeing teens and early 20s young women, wearing the terrible crystal jewellry that was about in the 90s!

I'm old now aren't I?

If this is "back" then that's it...it's so frigging UGLY!

Back when I was hip and all that, I wore original 60s jewellry...so that's all they're doing isn't it??

Wearing the stuff I wore when I was young! Shock

Just checking...what are your teens and young women dds wearing?

Oh, I had an amethyst in a cage too. And DH had a runic thing on a cord!
Also DM boots, leggings and a Therapy? Tshirt. I loved the 90's.

expatinscotland · 18/09/2017 16:19

I still wear DM boots. Have been wearing them since 1984 when I saved up all my money from my 13th birthday to buy them. They're far from just a 90s thing.

weebarra · 18/09/2017 16:21

Oh yes expat. I really regret getting rid of mine. Though my feet have changed size after 3 DCs so they probably wouldn't fit now.

Floellabumbags · 18/09/2017 16:28

Oh no I am not, I am wearing dungaree pinafore and DMs, several silver rings with crystals, amethyst earrings and a wooden pendant that a friend made. My hair is white with a slight lilac tint to my fringe.
How very dare I?

Purple hair, too much make-up and converse that go up to my knees and make me look like a wrestler. I refuse to grow old gracefully.

Floellabumbags · 18/09/2017 16:28

Bold fail, bugger it!

expatinscotland · 18/09/2017 17:48

'Oh yes expat. I really regret getting rid of mine. Though my feet have changed size after 3 DCs so they probably wouldn't fit now.'

I had my 1984 ones until 2003 when, like you, my feet changed forever after giving birth to DD1. So I bought more Smile. They're still going strong! I wear them often. I get compliments on my twista bead necklaces. But I'd wear them anyway because i care not a fuck if people like what I wear or not.

Whiterabbitears · 18/09/2017 18:37

I bought a silver and agate crystal pendant on Saturday, does this mean I'm hopelessly out of style or sad and desperate? Sad I'm 36 so definitely not a teenager, I feel a bit deflated about my pendant now Confused

limitedperiodonly · 18/09/2017 19:02

As long as you like your pendant that is the main thing Whiterabbitears. Why are you asking for validation?

Floisme · 18/09/2017 19:09

Don't let it get to you, Whiterabbit. You have just had a premature insight into the choice every middle aged woman has to make:
Keep up with fashion - 'sad and desperate'
Don't keep up with fashion - 'sad and frumpy'.

Ignore them - pendant sounds lovely.

Whiterabbitears · 18/09/2017 19:43

I'm not sure really, Ive never had a clue about fashion, always hopelessly unstylish!

Floisme
Thank you Smile yes it does seem to be the only two options, I don't get why women judge each other, life's hard enough without all that nonsense as well. I shall wear my pendant and be proud to be desperate! Wink

I've got a fuck off chunk of labradorite on a string around my neck, star and moon earring studs and dr marten boots on right now Grin not to mention the many silver and be-gemstoned rings (I even like these silly new midi rings as it means I can buy cheap second hand silver even if it wasn't meant to fit my sausage fingers)

Sometimes people just like things! I've loved this stuff since I was a kid unaware of any trends. If certain styles make you reminisce that's lovely but I can never understand why someone would bother bitching about anyone else's tastes.

It makes me happy seeing people wearing things they clearly love. And there are more offensive places to parade your jewellery on than thumbs.

LetZygonsbeZygones · 18/09/2017 20:10

sistersofpercy and anyone else who has rings for hypermobility fingers/thumbs, I'd be so grateful if you could tell me where you get them. What I need is one f the joint at the base of my thumb which comes out of place and hurts like buggery... Sorry to derail the thread. I think everyone should wear jewelry that brings them joy and/or keeps their fingers aligned :)

JennyBlueWren · 18/09/2017 20:24

I didn't know what everyone was on about until Alpacas mentioned the black cord and stone in a spiral thing. If they're fashionable then that's great. I can teach my class to make them for the school fair! I used to do them with marbles and things but then I was quite uncool.

limitedperiodonly · 18/09/2017 20:44

Whiterabbit if you like it, just wear it. I chose an agate brooch for my mum that had red flecks in the green that looked like deer. It was clasped in yellow gold and was beautiful. Sadly, burglars stole it.

Whiterabbitears · 18/09/2017 20:54

You're right, I shouldn't care what other people think. I'm sorry about your mums brooch, that's terrible.

SistersOfPercy · 18/09/2017 21:21

@letzygonsbezygons mine are from a lady on Facebook called ring splints by zomile.
I have a similar problem with my thumb joint and a splint fixed it.

LetZygonsbeZygones · 18/09/2017 22:15

sistersofpercy thanks ever so. Will take a look. Glad the splint helped you.

SusanTheGentle · 18/09/2017 22:51

@IamEarthymama Oi, some of us are stuck in bloody Hotter bloody shoes due to shitty feet. It's miserable.

The 90s are definitely back though, as a yoof back then i'm finding it hilarious - walking through Dalston is like a trip through memory lane. I've seen literally entire outfits I used to wear on people. Tan faux suede skirt over black opaques with a black polo (I think it was even a body and everything), vintagey looking slips over tshirts, DMs and drapey flowery see through shirts. It's lovely. It's also a reminder that actually those days were a bit short on classic style and I'm much happier channelling the 40s and 50s myself these days, causing much consternation from my nan!

beaubeau11 · 19/09/2017 17:30

I hate it when people put chavvy Jewellery on babies it's horrid.

Numberonecook · 19/09/2017 18:16

My dd1 is wearing chokers, dungarees and cat ear headbands. She also has a thing about crystals at the moment too. Hates every time I say 'oooo I had one similar to that!' Thinks everything's brand new Grin

crazycatz · 19/09/2017 18:50

I started wearing a thumb ring. It's got elephants on it and was a present from my husband and kids. I'm 46 and thinking of getting my first tattoo! people are strange with their judgements! what is the point? only young people are still so naive they think theyre the centre of the universe. growing old can be liberating and should def be embraced.

Floisme · 19/09/2017 19:20

To be fair I find the judgemental comments are made by people of all ages - it's certainly not just young people.

Ginburee · 19/09/2017 20:41

I have regretted for the last 8 year that I gave my DM's to a charity shop.
Pre marriage and that sat collecting dust... Had a hall of shoes (pre kids) and I so regret that desicion.
My DM's were a massive part of me and I so wish I still had them.
But, good fortune to whom ever does and my feet have grown with 3 pregnancies so they may not have fitted me now.

CloneClubSestra · 20/09/2017 02:41

Ooh 'awful' sounds judgy...

I'm post-50... sometimes boots with leggings (no camel toe) and lots of silver / skull / pagan / sci-fi jewellery.

Sometimes designer wear with a weird-ass hair clip and pearls.

Sometimes jewellery that my kids made in primary school out of string and bits of plastic.

Rarely - little black dress, black heels and some diamonds...

The only time I've had strangers give me compliments - is when I've worn my unusual pieces or outfits.

IDGAF what other people think and vice versa.

YABU (and judgy) Biscuit

Graphista · 20/09/2017 03:06

Goodness knows what the judge pp re rings would make of my 'o' ring necklace. Grin I not only like how it looks but it holds real meaning for me.

I love seeing people wearing different styles and fashions. Whatever age.

One of my support workers wears fabulous little short swing dresses with opaque tights and very sturdy shoes (don't blame her, she's all over the county with her job), there's a lady in my town I don't know her personally but guessing she's at least 10 years older than me (45) who has bright purple glossy hair (seriously fab condition!) that's sort of a bob one side and shaved the other, she wears floaty skirts and tops and several sets of beads looks amazing and happy.

I wore today bright pink linen trousers, cut away back t shirt, fakey converse from primark. I like 70's fashion and also have my hair long it was even in plaits today.

I can also scrub up well smart and have good legs so still wear short skirts and dresses too. The other day was wearing a little 60's style dress (again primark) sheer tights and little pumps. I got 2 lovely compliments 'I put you nearer 35' and out shopping with dd 'is that your mum? She's a lovely looking lady eh?'

So I think good.

I like how I dress and look.

I wish dd would be more experimental, she's going through the wanting to dress exactly like her friends phase so ripped skin tight jeans, bralet tops, big hoop earrings.

She has a gorgeous figure, waist length naturally curly hair, quite tall so she could literally wear anything and still look gorgeous (mum bias Grin).

But it's mostly Dark plain colours. Just wish she'd step outside her comfort zone a little.
