To drink?!

FuckMyUterus · 17/09/2017 14:30

Okay bear with me.
I literally NEVER drink, as me and OH are TTC. Today he has gone to a local pub/restaurant to meet some acquaintances to talk business. I have decided to chill on the sofa whilst my son is glued to some new dvds upstairs.
I am watching Pretty Little Liars and enjoying a very nice bottle or two of wine as spritzers. I updated my status to say 'wine, PLL, and vape, happy Sunday!'
Within minutes I'd received a phone call off my mother to say that I should not be drinking unsupervised whilst in charge of my son. My son is 6, he's has lunch and I am not planning to get smashed. For crying out loud I'm almost 27, am I really not allowed to enjoy a drink on a Sunday afternoon?! For reference, the last time I drank was last year Sad.
So, AIBU?!

Pretty Little Liars

As in the one based on the book? With Reese Witherspoon in?

Any good?

Oh and yeah, don't overshare on Facebook!

Backtoblack1 · 17/09/2017 17:37

Have had a glass of rosé myself this afternoon! Not putting it on Facebook as my niece will report it to my mum! I'm 41. Enjoy and bottoms up! X

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 17/09/2017 17:40

Nope. Reese Witherspoon is in Big Little Lies.

The OP is talking about Pretty Little Liars, which is also based on a book but does not star Reese Witherspoon. It has been airing since 2010, recently ended with season 7 this summer and can be found on Netflix.

It is brilliant.

I would judge, but that's because I don't approve of alcohol or vaping.

If you go to a restaurant and someone has a glass of wine with a meal do you judge? Do you judge people going out socially and drinking? Do you judge others at weddings drinking or on Christmas Day? You must spend half your life clutching your pearls and judging others.

OP I wouldn't have had any alcohol if I was home alone with the children tbh as we live very rurally but hope you enjoyed your glass or 2 of wine.

confused123456 · 17/09/2017 17:48

I think as long as you are not drunk and are in a perfectly fit state to be looking after a child then it's no one else's business at all.
I have a 2 year old. I also have a beer high alcohol tolerance. I can easily drink a bottle of wine in the evening and i will not be drunk, or even tipsy. I also don't ever get hangovers. I drink when my child is at home. I don't get drunk and I am perfectly fine to take care of him. Why wouldn't I have a drink in my own home?

Aahh thank you! Going to have a look on Netflix!

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 17/09/2017 18:12

CallMeKate I judge anyone having alcohol at any time. And no, I'm not the pearl clutching type, I just don't approve of alcohol; just like I don't approve of other drugs.

Brittbugs80 Pretty Little Liars is really good but I've never heard of Big Little Lies so I unfortunately can't say how similar they are Grin

Brittbugs80 · 17/09/2017 18:20

I think you mean Big Little Lies

Apparently I do! And I haven't even had a drink Smile

TwoKidsAndCounting · 17/09/2017 18:54

Why would anyone not approve of alcohol?? Please give us good enough reasons

My MIL doesn't approve of alcohol but she could do with a few to losen up and chill out a bit

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 17/09/2017 18:58

Please give us good enough reasons

Nope. I don't need to explain myself to anyone, least of all someone with an attitude.

FallingOrbit · 17/09/2017 19:02

Nope. I don't need to explain myself to anyone

Erm, you're right in the sense that (obviously) no one can force you to explain your self on here, but it's a bit daft to wade in with such an extreme opinion as "alcohol should be illegal" without bothering to explain why. Surely you knew you'd be challenged on that?

You aren't in charge (of anything, thank goodness) so no one else has to abide by what you think is ok or not.

I was going to respond to you earlier but I decided I couldn't be arsed and knew someone else would anyway (which I'm glad about btw)

Why not just give your REASONS instead? Saying "no good comes of it" is bullshit - do you listen to any music at all? A hell of a lot of great music was created under the influence of alcohol.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 17/09/2017 19:12

FallingOrbit I would have been willing to explain it to someone genuinely interested, but I'm not bothering with someone who has an attitude.

FallingOrbit · 17/09/2017 19:15

Well as I'm genuinely interested, could I hear (read) your reasons please? You surely recognise that banning alcohol and frowning upon anyone who consumes any amount under any circumstances is going to be met with a raised eyebrow... let's hear it?

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 17/09/2017 19:23

FallingOrbit No, because you have an attitude about it.

TwoKidsAndCounting · 17/09/2017 19:28

Look, my comment wasn't meant to project attitude, I am interested actually why you condemn people for drinking alcohol? I have friends attending AA and they don't condemn it. I have never smoked or done drugs but wouldn't codemn people who have them in the past or who presently smoke let alone vaped. Mumsnet has become a place for people to vent their anger using threads they dislike as their medium, it's annoying, if you've got nothing positive to add move on. By the way my MIL didn't like alcohol because of dark things happened in her past, fair enough, doesn't give her the right to judge anyone who likes to enjoy a social drink however

FallingOrbit · 17/09/2017 19:29

No, because you have an attitude about it

Oh, now it's me that has an attitude about it? I thought you were referring to TwoKids - so anyone who thinks your take on this might be a a little extreme has an "attitude" - brilliant argument.

TwoKids didn't display an attitude towards you and neither did I, we've both just asked for your reasons and you've refused to give them.
That, is the marque of someone who has no argument, you just want to believe whatever you want to believe. Which is a shame, because I've seen you post quite a bit and often agreed with you on other topics, I really was expecting some kind of reasoned response. Disappointed.

Put up or shut up. < genuine bit of attitude due to your shitty non argument.

TwoKidsAndCounting · 17/09/2017 19:38

Orbit your attitude stinks! 😂

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 17/09/2017 19:41

FallingOrbit So when you said this:

You aren't in charge (of anything, thank goodness)

You weren't displaying an attitude? And that's just one example.

The defensiveness you're displaying is typical of alcohol drinkers. Your attitude is the reason I'm not engaging my reasons with you. If you don't like that, you should think about the way you talk to people and you might get a better response out of them.

TwoKidsAndCounting I wasn't venting any anger when responding to the thread, I was just responding to the OP.

Mittens1969 · 17/09/2017 19:47

WhatToDoAboutThis2017, you can't expect to state something like 'alcohol should be illegal' and not be challenged about it. If you make a statement like that you should be prepared to back it up.

The US tried banning alcohol in the 1930s and discovered that it wasn't workable as all it did was create an opportunity for criminals. I'm saying this as someone who has had an alcohol problem in the past but come through it. It's abuse of alcohol that's the problem, there's no harm in drinking it in moderation.

FallingOrbit · 17/09/2017 19:56

The defensiveness you're displaying is typical of alcohol drinkers

How did you arrive at the conclusion that I drink alcohol? Is this non-sequitur hour? Did I miss an email?

And I'm happy to stand by my oh so unreasonable statement that I'm GLAD you aren't in charge of anything. YOU think that because YOU don't like something therefore no one else should be allowed to like it (to whatever degree) either - fuckin' A I'm glad you're not in charge.

And you STILL haven't presented a single fucking reason as to why alcohol should be BANNED other than you reckon it should. Get on with it already.

CallMeKate · 17/09/2017 20:05

Pull your judgey pants out of the crack of your arse FFS, they must be really uncomfortable. No-one is being defensive except for you WhatTo.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 17/09/2017 21:23

Mittens1969 I'm well aware of prohibition and its failures. I still would like alcohol to be illegal. It never will be because it's too ingrained in our culture now and it makes a lot of money, but I can still wish it was.

YOU think that because YOU don't like something therefore no one else should be allowed to like it

Incorrect. There's a lot of things I don't like that I'm perfectly happy for others to have or to engage in.

Get on with it already.

Nope. Like I said, your attitude is the reason I'm not disclosing anything to you.

CallMeKate Oh they're not uncomfortable in the slightest, but I appreciate your concern Grin
