Nc for this one which will may stick
sil and her kids coming to visit and said she will be here for 11am. So I cooked 2 different meals and have been up since 9 getting housework done.

It's now past 1pm no sign of them and no call either to say they will be late.
Now aibu to just lock up and go out, it's such a lovely day and I promised I will take the kids to the farm later and I still need to get my shopping for the weekend.
I have text but no reply as of yet. That was an hour ago.

WTF has misogyny got to do with anything?

kali110 · 16/09/2017 16:12

Whats the point in going on about the post when you can take the piss out of the op? Hmm

Softkittysillykitty · 16/09/2017 16:13

IME if you cook steak, you normally ask how they like it done. I would have eaten (or tried to) the steak offered by OP out of politeness but would have thought it odd in the first place. Steak isn't like chicken where it has to be cooked through. The beauty is in the texture.

Coffeeandcherrypie · 16/09/2017 16:15

Well, WTF does how OP cook steak got to do with anything?

LurkingHusband · 16/09/2017 16:18

Why are people blethering on about how to cook steak?

Because it seems no one here has ever heard of the OPs method. Speaking for myself, I'm always on the lookout for new knowledge or ideas - especially in cuisine (that said, I think I'll give this technique a miss).

That's not what the post is about.

I must remember to look up the word "discussion" one day. I'm sure I've got the wrong idea.

Seems very rude.

This is AIBU ......

InsomniacAnonymous · 16/09/2017 16:18

kali110 "I like my steak medium, not made into leather." "Thats you."

That's what I said. I. Confused

Foxysoxy01 · 16/09/2017 16:18

Sorry OP I know it is incredibly rude to derail your thread but how do you actually cook your steak?

I have never heard of cooking it any other way than frying for a 10/15 ish mins, maybe BBQ or grill but again not for much longer than 10 mins.

I am really rubbish at cooking steak and make even the best meat like rubber so any new ways of cooking it I would appreciate!

LurkingHusband · 16/09/2017 16:20

IME if you cook steak, you normally ask how they like it done

Actually there's another step which is to then try and achieve it Grin

FiL was insistent on asking how we liked our steaks done, and then incinerated them anyway.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 16/09/2017 16:21

Goodness, steak isn't cheap to buy, why ruin it?

It sort of matters, because if the OP was cooking steak in a more conventional way, she wouldn't have started cooking it until they'd arrived, so it would be possible to just pop it in the freezer and eat another time, rather than having to overeat tonight in order to use it up.

OP - 1. change the way you cook steak, it'll taste better and 2. never agree to cater for SIL again, and make sure you never wait in for her again.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 16/09/2017 16:23

I'd hazard a guess but maybe the OP was braising her steak? That can take some time if it is to be cooked thoroughly

PickAChew · 16/09/2017 16:23

Mary berry reheats steak.

Theresnonamesleft · 16/09/2017 16:25

Isn't braised when it's in the oven though with liquid to stop it drying out?

BeachyKeen · 16/09/2017 16:31

It was rude of her not to let you know she wasn't coming. It would have only taken a minute and saved you a lot of hassle.

It was odd, and bad practice, to start cooking steaks before your guest had even arrived, to tell you how they like theirs!

category12 · 16/09/2017 16:31

Part of the OP's complaint was that she'd cooked two different meals for these people, which makes her cooking sort of relevant. Seems odd to cook anyway for people who were supposed to turn up at 11, and hadn't shown their face by 1pm. So when asked about that she said she'd part-cooked it earlier. Which is, um, unusual for steak.

Anyway once upon a time, my exSIL was once supposed to be cooking an evening meal for the PILs on a rare visit. Their plane was delayed and SIL knew this, but she still cooked the meal for the same time and ate without them. When the PILs finally got there, they were made to eat on a side table like naughty children. Very odd. People are sometimes.

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 16/09/2017 16:32

She was very rude. I totally agree with not taking food over to her.

Butterymuffin · 16/09/2017 16:37

So the SIL was incredibly rude but people are finding fault with the OP instead because she doesn't cook steak in the approved way? FFS. It changes nothing.

I like the plan where you agree to meet them next time but don't show. Do it.

LurkingHusband · 16/09/2017 16:46

but people are finding fault with the OP instead because she doesn't cook steak in the approved way?

I think people are more intrigued than finding fault. Certainly I wanted to know if I've been doing things wrong for years.

Softkittysillykitty · 16/09/2017 16:48

I'm now wondering whether it was more like a roasting joint that OP cut into steak pieces. That would make sense of the 2hours and pre-grilling etc.

PickAChew · 16/09/2017 17:36

Reheated steak

cliffdiver · 16/09/2017 17:53

If I found out I was having steak that had been cooked for 2 hours I would have probably failed to turn up Grin

existentialmoment · 16/09/2017 17:57

That recipe still only cooks them twice, and for 8 minutes or so total. Not 4 times and for several hours!

BadLad · 16/09/2017 18:12

Sounds like an honest missteak.

Niamhisnotarealname · 16/09/2017 18:29

I know your kissed off and you've flounced OP but I do agree your SIL was very rude to just not show.
unfortunately for you I am another one who is alarmed at cooking steak for 2 hours! Confused 1.5 minutes on each side in a searing hot pan maximum and then left to rest on a warm plate for about 5 minutes.

At least you won't poison yourself I suppose but your poor teeth!

The op didn't come back :(
