@Fauchelevent my nearest posh market town (that I can't afford to live in) has Cook, M&S food AND Waitrose. Paradise for lazy poshos!

Allwashedup · 15/09/2017 22:58

^^Lymington, by any chance?

e1y1 · 15/09/2017 23:35

Hands down, M&S.

Although saying that, I really (and I mean really) don't get the Waitrose hype. Everything I have had from there has never been anything to write home about.

Indont get the love (or perceived status of shopping there). Much more comfortable with Sainsbury's.

Now if you shop at Fortnum & Mason.... Grin

e1y1 · 15/09/2017 23:35

*I don't

PumbletonWakeshaft · 15/09/2017 23:36

@Allwashedup no, seems there's actually more than one posh town with all 3!

PickAChew · 15/09/2017 23:44

I can do a week's shop at either. M&S veg is fresher, Waitrose curries and sausages are better. M& a pasta meals are better. Waitrose better for herbs and spices, since they sell Bart spices. They're level pegging on coffee and wine. Waitrose watercress sauce is gopping while markses' is delicious.

Swings and roundabouts but m&s is much nearer, so I buy more stuff there.

Puffpaw · 15/09/2017 23:44

I think m&s food is both more expensive and more upmarket.
The truly smart get their food from their estate/local fishermen etc.

Puffpaw · 15/09/2017 23:45

I meant to say m&s food is also better!

Toddlerteaplease · 15/09/2017 23:49

M&S food is so much nicer than Waitrose. And cheaper!

PickAChew · 15/09/2017 23:50

Actually, markses single origin coffees are better than Waitrose. I much refer the coffee from a local roaster to either but it's£8 a packet!

user327854831 · 15/09/2017 23:52

M and S is more expensive, £8 for cherries anybody ? The curries and pizzas are nicer though.

somewhereovertherain · 15/09/2017 23:52

M&S are awful short dates and food which goes off quickly

Booths is the best supermarket

Aldi best value supermarket

F&m or selfridges posh.

Onthehighseas · 15/09/2017 23:54

Booths, then Waitrose, then M & S

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 15/09/2017 23:54

Baffled why people think M&S food tastes better, curries are pretty good but otherwise it's pretty standard..

I don't rate them tbh. Im incredibly sensitive to smell and taste and plenty of the Marks stuff is pretty bland tbh.

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 15/09/2017 23:55

Waitrose has shite fresh veg though. Local estate Tesco has fresher, better tasting fruit and veg. Everything in waitrose in the summer is crap.

MsGameandWatching · 15/09/2017 23:56

Harrods food hall. £3.95 for a cupcake. However you can get a smoked salmon roll the size of your head for a fiver, would fill you for the day.

Coincidentally given this thread, I did two identical shops on line with Ocado and Tesco earlier on to see the difference in price. Tesco was only £6 cheaper, which I get is a lot to many but I also had to pay £7.00 for delivery with Tesco, with Ocado it was free.

hellokittymania · 16/09/2017 00:02

I prefer Waitrose, don't know which is more posh though. I would have said Marks & Spencer's as well.

maxthemartian · 16/09/2017 00:07

I don't understand the Waitrose criticism. It's the best stocked supermarket in the UK imo. You can get loads of lovely things if your budget runs to that, and if not, the basics range is actually decent quality.
Plus they give truly generous amounts of money off - just got twenty quid off my online shop, really decent money off vouchers quite often... compare that to a Sparks card!

Lovejoyfull · 16/09/2017 00:23

Not all Waitrose branches are equal. The one on Marylebone High St stocks fancier and more expensive foods than some other high street branches, it really depends on the local demographic. In any case I have never seen Poilane bread in Tesco/Sainsbury's or M&S! You don't get speciality food in M&S. Waitrose on balance is fancier than M&S but I think they are trying to compete with Tesco and M&S hence the cheaper ranges and price matching now seen in most branches. To be honest though the poshest shops where I live are the independent butchers and Wholefood type stores.

maxthemartian · 16/09/2017 00:30

Love that's a good point. My nearest large Tesco is pretty good whereas the one where I lived before was dreadful - completely different demographics.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/09/2017 00:35

You can't really get much at M&S, certainly not do a proper shop
And the fruit and veg are eye wateringly expensive

I do a proper shop there. The fruit and vegetables are more expensive but cheap horrible fruit which isn't then be eaten is more expensive than M&S which is always good.

SequinsOnEverything · 16/09/2017 00:37

Waitrose!

Evewasinnocent · 16/09/2017 00:38

M&S tops Waitrose

squoosh · 16/09/2017 00:41

M&S is nice, but it's more for ready meals than anything else. If I fancied cooking a gorgeous meal I'd be more likely to head to Waitrose for my ingredients than Marks.

Twofurrycats · 16/09/2017 00:49

As I can never find things in M&S - once had a meltdown in St Ann's when they had randomly sprinkled the components of the meal deal throughout the store - I consider them annoying not posh. Booths on the other hand is posh and I get a free coffee.
