Please settle our argument.....I think that Waitrose food is posher than M&S food, DH think M&S is the poshest? Who is right?

Neither is posh since they're just supermarkets but m&s is posher. Waitrose is literally "just" a supermarket, m&s is mainly for special occasion/ treat/ lunch out food.

RicottaPancakes · 15/09/2017 20:13

Hmmmm looks like DH is winning......I am eating M&S chocolates atm though!

Waitrose had a basics range. Not posh

PetronellaOsgood · 15/09/2017 20:15

Your DH is incorrect, Aldi/Lidl get a head start on Asda for their wine, gin and chocolate alone Grin

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 15/09/2017 20:15

Waitrose posher then M&S food. Definitely posher brands in Waitrose. M&S food isn't as nice, either

TillyTheTiger · 15/09/2017 20:16

I'd say SonicBoomBoom is spot on with the order

greendale17 · 15/09/2017 20:17

I prefer M&S

Sparklingbrook · 15/09/2017 20:19

Our local Waitrose isn't 'just a supermarket'. It has a wine bar, a sushi bar and two cafes. That's quite posh.

PoppyPopcorn · 15/09/2017 20:20

You're comparing apples and oranges though - Waitrose is a full supermarket with butcher counter and deli. You could get everything you'd need for the family weekly shop at Waitrose. M&S is more "grab and go" food, sandwiches, ready meals, salads and things for a meal that night. You'd struggle to do a full shop there.

I have no ideas what Booths is.

Runaways01 · 15/09/2017 20:20

I'd say M&S. Waitrose do lots of 'Essentials' products which makes them seem less posh to me, whereas I don't think(?) M&S do a value brand. Or if they do it's not in obvious value-style packaging.

I also think the free coffee has cheapened Waitrose's brand, because there were lots of cheapskates (like me) coming in just for the freebie.

And I think M&S food tastes more luxurious and the customer service is better.

silverbell64 · 15/09/2017 20:21

Waitrose is marketed to the "posher" person, where M&S has stayed a bit more sensible about their approach.

PetronellaOsgood · 15/09/2017 20:21

Agree MyBrilliantDisguise , M&S are kings of the ready meal, but if you want actual ingredients, Waitrose is the place. Having said that I love M&S fresh bread from the bakery counter.

SallySmiley · 15/09/2017 20:23

Waitrose for 'from scratch' cooking, m&s for pre prepared stuff.
My properly posh friends tend to get their stuff from individual suppliers.

SallySmiley · 15/09/2017 20:24

Cross posted. It must be true then!

SoPassRemarkable · 15/09/2017 20:27

Someone's got in before me with Booths!

MiddlingMum · 15/09/2017 20:30

Our Waitrose is pleasant but not posh.

YorkieDorkie · 15/09/2017 20:35

This bad boy! Can't wait for Christmas!

LesLavandes · 15/09/2017 20:36

M&S. It's not an essentials supermarket so everything seems yummy

PeterBlue · 15/09/2017 20:37

Waitrose portions are certainly larger.

Fucking COOK is the most expensive, overpriced, poshest excuse for buying ready meals I have ever seen. Over £20 for a stew for 4 people!! I only went in there for the free samples of cake. I'm surprised they let me in.

Waitrose and M&S are bargain basement by comparison. But if I had to choose, it would be Waitrose. M&S is have-a-treat posh - Waitrose is everyday posh.

OlennasWimple · 15/09/2017 20:41

M&S only has a few non-own brand things in stock, whereas Waitrose has it's own brand plus almost every other one you can think of. This makes it a bit tricky to compare directly

I think Waitrose probably just about clinches it because it stocked Duchy Originals before anywhere else, and I've only ever seen an ostrich egg on the shelf in a Waitrose.

Missingstreetlife · 15/09/2017 20:42

Waitrose is part of John Lewis, posher than m/s. Better quality bedlinen, furniture etc.
Cook do better ready dinners.
Try doing the same shop in each and see which is more expensive. M/s more mainstream, Waitrose more in upmarket areas?
Where do you feel more comfortable?

JonSnowsWife · 15/09/2017 20:42

Two cafes? Sparkling whereabouts is your local waitrose so I can visit the wine bar see the two cafes for myself?

Tubbyinthehottub · 15/09/2017 20:43

Waitrose is posher than M&S. Booths is even posher.
