Don't know what to do with wedding dress

..AIBU not to have had a plan on place for it before the wedding?

Married 3 weeks ago. Dress was £600, £100 alterations.

A huge part of me wants to wear it every day and veg on the sofa in it like that Friends episode, just enjoying the most expensive item of clothing I'll ever wear.

Another part says donate it to a charitable cause.

Another part says recoup what money I can, and pay off the disastrous due to Hurricane Irma honeymoon credit card. But where to sell it, and do I have it dry cleaned first?

I'm so torn!

As you said, its harder to get second hand plus size so I would definitely try to sell. Make some money back and give another bride the opportunity to save money!

honeylulu · 15/09/2017 14:00

I've still got mine. It's written in my will that I want to be buried in it though anyone I've mentioned that to thinks it's a gruesome idea. I'm a bit of a goth though!

HotNatured · 15/09/2017 14:01

Beautiful dress

LagunaBubbles · 15/09/2017 14:04

Gorgeous dress! Lots of charity shops sell wedding dresses. I think there is an episode of Say Yes to the Dress UK (yes Im sad, married 19 years and I love these programmes!) dedicated to Oxfam.

CoolCarrie · 15/09/2017 14:05

That's a fab dress and donating it is a lovely idea.

winglesspegasus · 15/09/2017 14:08

SootSprite · 15/09/2017 14:08

Beautiful.

Personally, I'd keep it.

I don't still put mine on occasionally (ignoring the fact that I can't zip it up anymore) and prance around the room in it. Nope, not me 😂 Been married 22 years. 😂

AntiGrinch · 15/09/2017 14:10

I know someone who did this and hung it in her house

www.hitched.co.uk/chat/blogs/editor/page/20170220/frame-your-wedding-dress-and-accessories-with-the-beautiful-frame-company.aspx

It isn't clear to me whether you could bust it out and find it in good condition if a relative, friend or god daughter ever wanted to wear it in the future!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/09/2017 14:13

I get mine out of the loft and flounce around in it in my wedding anniversary. It didn't fit on our 1st anniversary as I'd just had a baby, but every other year it has just about done up. I use it as a kind of fatness barometer slash fun activity. Dh calls me Miss Haversham.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 15/09/2017 14:15

Thanks all! I'm still chuffed with how it came out.

writes here you go. It has a small train at the back (Google Wed2B Divine dress). Cathedral veil.

Lots of ideas here. Anyone done anything else?

honey I get it!!

Frame your dress for £650+ LOL - that's more than my dress cost to begin with!

  • I've been married 18 months and it's still in the loft!
SugarMiceInTheRain · 15/09/2017 14:15

I'm sure someone on here made a beautiful quilted throw thing out of their wedding dress and a deep red crushed velvet material - it was stunning, and a great way of reusing it and getting joy out of your wedding dress regularly - if I were crafty enough I'd do that with mine, but I can't even sew in a straight line

retreatwhispering · 15/09/2017 14:17

I used my veil as net curtains for years :-)

The dress I kept, intended for christening gowns but never go around to it when the DC arrived. Am now keeping it for a future big wedding anniversary as motivation to lose weight and get back into it.

Lovely dress OP. You look beautiful. In your situation I'd ask a dressmaker to alter it into an evening dress or to use the fabric for other things (cushions, cover a chair, turn into a quilt maybe?)

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 15/09/2017 14:17

Love the idea of randomly flouncing around different in it. That's pretty much what I fancy doing!

wingless Am in the UK. Honeymoon spent hunkering down through the hurricane, but we were unscathed and got home in one piece. So much luckier than so many people out there.

Cross posted with the quilt idea Sugarmouse!

slbhill42 · 15/09/2017 14:19

One of the reasons I didn't get married in a wedding dress. I used a posh evening frock which I've worn several times since. But obviously that's not for everyone.
There are quite a few charity shops here and there which sell 2nd hand wedding dresses.
I think if you have space I'd keep it for a year until the novelty has worn off before deciding whether to get rid of it or keep it :-)

SPARKS17 · 15/09/2017 14:20

I would try and sell it first, then if it hasn't sold after 6 months either donate to charity or keep it!

Even if someone wants to buy it you don't have to go through with it but it will make you realise if you are attached to it or willing to let it go.

MrsPringles · 15/09/2017 14:22

I can't bare to part with mine, my wedding was last December so not that long ago.

It's all wrapped up in a big storage box, I did twirl around the kitchen in it last week, DS (3) thought it was hilarious Grin

Bumbumtaloo · 15/09/2017 14:24

I have on more than one occasion put my wedding dress on and sat watching TV in it Blush

My dress got lost in our last house move, I was absolutely gutted. It is by far my most favourite item of clothing I have ever bought.

Shockers · 15/09/2017 14:24

It's a beautiful dress! You'll always have the photographs of you in it, even if the dress goes on to make other brides feel wonderful.

Mine wasn't very fancy. 19 years later, it's in a dress bag in the wardrobe, reminding me that I was once thin Grin.

AllToadsLeadToHome · 15/09/2017 14:25

There is a charity that finds items for people who want to marry where one is terminally ill and want to marry before the partner dies.

I thought it was a lovely idea giving people the wedding they dreamed of and memories for the surviving partner.

I think it is this one - Gift of a Wedding giftofawedding.org/apply-for-a-wedding/

SootSprite · 15/09/2017 14:30

I'm actually really reassured that I'm not the only mad one who does this sort of thing Blush

sonsmum · 15/09/2017 14:33

Many say they will turn into christening gown or clothes for future kids, but who actually does that?! I don't think many in reality will do so, it would be such a faff!
I think it is nice to keep it if you have the space and every once in a while wear it and look in the mirror and recapture that day! It is a good indicator of whether you gain weight as you get older!

chocolateworshipper · 15/09/2017 14:42

My Mum had her wedding dress made into lampshades, which she kept for years (until the divorce lol)

Bonkerz · 15/09/2017 14:44

I have mine (14 years later). It's screwed up in a carrier bag under my bed! To be fair it cost me £62 and was actually a bridesmaids dress in blue but I've always wanted to get it made into cushions or bears for the children just never got around to it!!!!!
