Going to London tomorrow - what to do :(

pinkunicornsarefluffy · 15/09/2017 11:52

Posting here for traffic, I am going to London tomorrow, train from here to Paddington, then Euston, then Watford Junction.

Having just seen the news about the bomb, I am now terrified. I rarely go to London and this is so scary. There will be 3 adults and 3 children aged 9, 10 and 13.

If we don't go, we lose £600, but what price your life or your kids life?

We are still thinking of going and doing bus or taxi from Paddington.

Has anyone got any advice on transport ?

What would you do?

You were trying to mislead people by implying that Watford is part of London borough councils even if you didn't actually say those words

I seriously wasn't. I'm really sorry if it came across that way.

My purpose in mentioning it was what I said - to point out that the argument that something is within a borough (or is itself a borough) means it can't also be a town is not supported by evidence - particularly because, as you've pointed out, 'borough' is itself relatively fluid in the powers it implies.

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 17/09/2017 15:36

Hahahaha. Who on earth would have thought you'd end up with deleted post on a discussion about whether Watford is in London or not?

Plenty of people who live in London wouldn't be able to tell you where Watford is or whether it's part of London. It's not even the end of the Met line - that's Amersham which is out in Buckinghamshire. It's a short drive or bus ride from Watford to Northwood, which is in London (London Borough of Hillingdon). Kids from Barnet and Harrow go to school in Watford. Why on earth wouldn't someone be unclear about whether Watford was in London who knew the area reasonably well? Let alone someone from the south west who has been told by marketing that it's in London?

When entering and/or leaving Watford into Hillingdon the sign on side of road says welcome to London borough of Hillingdon and the other side of the road it says Welcome to HERTFORDSHIRE (not Watford or Watford Borough council)

That is the difference we live in HERTFORDSHIRE

It has nothing to do with who our council is or what they call themselves

Hillingdon is sort of Middlesex but that is way too complicated to explain to you if you don't understand the county of Hertfordshire is where we live

London Borough Councils

There is nothing strange about not knowing where places are.
Why would you unless you visit them? Do you know where Bishops Waltham is? Greenock? Faringdon? Haywood? Matlock? South Kirkby?

Whitecurrants · 17/09/2017 16:16

WTAF happened to this thread? I came back assuming the OP would be saying she’s had a great trip and found this

Androidsdreamofelectricsheep · 17/09/2017 16:28

Watford isn't significant?Shock

whyhastherumgone · 17/09/2017 17:08

Agreed @whitecurrants
I can see why OP referred to going to London in her original post, as a good part of the route WAS in London. How did it turn into a pedantic bunfight over how much London knowledge/Geography everyone should have? Christ, this place is truly nuts sometimes.

Glad you made it OP, well done!

RonWeasleysWilly · 17/09/2017 17:10

Back to the topic in hand...

Hope OP's had a good time at HP sudios. I've also been there today and had a great time.

(I also knew where Watford is before today. Along with lots of places I may or may not have been. Some of us are interested in geography/ the country we live in. Bit sad this seems to be regarded as an unsual trait by some!)

whyhastherumgone · 17/09/2017 17:15

@RonWeasleysWilly, I love your username btw.

I think it's great to be interested in the Geography of things and to be able to have a discussion about it, but it's a shame when the tone becomes quite pendantic/aggressive/arrogant.

Very glad OP made it though! And I've definitely learnt one or two things from this thread ;) (Had no idea the tour was in Watford for example!)

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 17/09/2017 17:19

Well, to be strictly accurate, it's not in Watford. That's just the nearest big station. It's in Abbott's Langley.

AccrualIntentions · 17/09/2017 17:25

Also hoping the OP had a great time at Harry Potter World.

And I actually am interested in geography, I just committed the cardinal sin of not realising Watford wasn't in Greater London. Now I do know. I won't make the same mistake again (until 20 years down the line when London probably will have encompassed it anyway...) Today I have also learnt that Richmond and Kingston are within Greater London. It's been educational.

Happy to provide fun facts on the geographical minutiae of the area I live in though, but it's not the Home Counties so I fear there will be a lack of interest Smile

Iheartjordanknight · 17/09/2017 17:29

Don't worry too much Accrual. The Home Counties are the most boring places going. Full of people who think arguing about London boroughs on a Sunday afternoon is good fun

AccrualIntentions · 17/09/2017 17:40

Full of people who think arguing about London boroughs on a Sunday afternoon is good fun

It sounds like I'd fit right in Grin

Ttbb · 17/09/2017 17:47

There isn't really any difference terror risk wise between the tube and a bus. We have just start cabbing everywhere. The tube is gorge douslyovercroweded these days anyway, wouldn't take my kids on the tube islamists or not.

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 17/09/2017 18:11

Islamists

Hmm
Silvercatowner · 17/09/2017 18:16

Watford is in greater London?? Who'd've thought I could get to mid 50s and doctoral without realising this.

JassyRadlett · 17/09/2017 18:31

I am duly chastened, and also hoping OP had a lovely time today!

Fauchelevent · 17/09/2017 18:37

Imagine being that desperate to feel superior and cool on the internet as the ironically named dolcezza

It's not that deep. And why would anyone NEED to look on a map to see the destination of where they are getting a train? "Yup this citydefinitely exists..."

Get some fresh air, asprezza99. There's a world outside picking fights on the internet. Maybe even check a map to see where outside is, first.

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuckKeidis · 18/09/2017 13:59

I lived in Watford for 21 years. It's not in Greater London. London swallows up the whole of Middlesex, so Northwood's in Greater London, bizarrely, but Watford's in Hertfordshire, therefore not in Greater London.

Androidsdreamofelectricsheep · 18/09/2017 17:28

Evil doctor you aire quite right, Greater London always began/ended around Bushey Arches. And Harry Potter World is in Leavesden, not Abbott's Langley.
I can't believe people care that much. Grin
(I was born in Watford and I was very glad to leave.)

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 18/09/2017 17:32

It says Abbott's Langley on one of its addresses! Will the lying never end?

Bushey Arches truly is where the countryside begins. Just by the bit of the canal that they dragged (or not) Dirty Den's body out of. That should be a tour in itself.

Androidsdreamofelectricsheep · 18/09/2017 20:39

Don't tell my DM. She lives round the back of Harry Potter World ( in Abbott's Langley). When they built it she truly was 'Disgusted of Abbott's Langley'😂

holdthewine · 18/09/2017 23:21

Pinkunicorns - I only came on to find out if it was fun! Wow what a distraction in between. I'm afraid I only trawled back as far as you were in the hotel in Watford (just outside Greater London Wink) but was it good fun? Worth the hassle and travel?

pinkunicornsarefluffy · 19/09/2017 16:04

holdthewine yes it was great fun thanks, well worth a visit. DD and her friend loved it, but so did I Grin. My friend and her H thought it was great too, even though they aren't mad HP fans. There are some great exhibits of props and costumes and incredible models and sets etc. I could easily have spent more time there, taking in every little detail!
