Going to London tomorrow - what to do :(

Posting here for traffic, I am going to London tomorrow, train from here to Paddington, then Euston, then Watford Junction.

Having just seen the news about the bomb, I am now terrified. I rarely go to London and this is so scary. There will be 3 adults and 3 children aged 9, 10 and 13.

If we don't go, we lose £600, but what price your life or your kids life?

We are still thinking of going and doing bus or taxi from Paddington.

Has anyone got any advice on transport ?

What would you do?

@dolcezza99 😂😂😂

I love the imaginative uses of london. Imagine arriving at stanstead or Southend and thinking it was London- you would be raged.

dolcezza99 · 17/09/2017 09:32

I know. I'm honestly struggling to comprehend that someone thought Watford was in London. Have they never looked at a map?!

imablackstarnotapopstar · 17/09/2017 10:20

And from previous posts I see you won't drive on a motorway or anywhere other than local roads. You had a group of friends come over to clean your house and tidy up your garden because it was too overwhelming for you to do it yourself even though you're a young, healthy, professional woman with a child, and now you're adding using the tube and going to London as risky and have to "trick" your daughter to travel there. Do you not see how this is all a form of attention seeking and dramatising and that your DD is growing up with a rather bizarre view of the world? Is this not the time to seek psychological help?

AccrualIntentions · 17/09/2017 10:32

I assumed Watford was in Greater London because of the whole "north is north of Watford Gap" stuff that Londoners spout. I've never looked at it on a map, why would on earth would I ever have any cause to look up Watford?

dolcezza99 · 17/09/2017 10:36

God's sake. Watford is in Hertfordshire, about 20 miles north of London. Watford Gap Services is in Northamptonshire. Does nobody understand geography any more?

Iheartjordanknight · 17/09/2017 10:41

How can you get directly from Paddington to watford via the bakerloo line?!!

AccrualIntentions · 17/09/2017 10:43

God's sake. Watford is in Hertfordshire, about 20 miles north of London.

20 miles? Wow, so far away. Would you have a shit of the same proportions if someone described Hamsterly, or Chester-le-Street, or Murton as being Newcastle?

It's only people from the south east who expect everyone to know everything about the Home Counties. No one else cares.

Hope you had a good time OP

dolcezza99 · 17/09/2017 10:46

Gosh, Accrual, do you actually think people care about where things are in the North? How funny.

AccrualIntentions · 17/09/2017 10:48

Gosh, Accrual, do you actually think people care about where things are in the North? How funny.

I don't think that - that's my entire point. Why would they care at all, they don't live here. Why do you think that people should know where the border of Greater London ends?

dolcezza99 · 17/09/2017 10:51

Well, the OP was visiting it. You'd think she'd at least have a vague idea of where she was going. But she thought it was in London and then says "how am I supposed to know?" It's basic geography. Look at a map.

AccrualIntentions · 17/09/2017 10:54

But why should anyone else not visiting Watford know where it is? Or care? To extrapolate from people not knowing where Watford is to "OMG ur all so thick you don't even know geography innit" seems a strange reaction unless you expect everyone to know where Watford is. And presumably you only expect them to know that because it's next to London.

MiraiDevant · 17/09/2017 10:58

I get pretty enraged by "London Luton" and "London Stanstead" airports!! Neither is anywhere near London!!

MiraiDevant · 17/09/2017 10:59

She is visiting it - that's why she should know.

I have no idea where Little Smorgasboardford is - but I were going there tomorrow I would. Grin

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 17/09/2017 11:03

Half of the inhabitants of Watford say they live in London because that would be more exciting than Watford.

dolcezza99 · 17/09/2017 11:06

Because it's basic geography - and common sense - to have a vague idea of what is part of the capital of the country you live in and what isn't, that's why.

Suzieq323681 · 17/09/2017 12:10

I
Would think its the best time to travel, immediately after an attack! Everybody's vigilant and its crawling with armed police

Suzieq323681 · 17/09/2017 12:15

What about Bromley (Kent) being south east London ? At this rate one day every village, town and county will have the suffix London

Sad at the amount of people saying get an 'uber'. Why not just say get a taxi. Or a cab. Uber are undercutting small firms and black cab fares. London black cab drivers have to pass a difficult and expensive knowledge test. Use an 'uber' and you are killing this service. It's worth paying a bit more for. Lots of local minicab firms have apps that you can use.

dolcezza99 · 17/09/2017 13:16

I've lived in London by entire life and never knew Watford Gap was not in London. I don't drive and I never go to Watford so why would I know that?

Watford Gap isn't even in Watford. Watford Gap services are at Watford Gap, which is the name of a place. In Northamptonshire on the M1. Miles away.

I think it's sad that people don't have a basic working knowledge of the capital city of the country in which they live. It's willful ignorance and there's no excuse for it, really. It's like thinking that, I dunno, Yeovil is in Bristol because they're both in the Westcountry.

This is an absolute crock of shit. Watford is not a significant place (no offence to anyone who lives there, I'm sure it's lovely). The boundaries of Greater London have changed massively over the years. Someone not knowing, for example, that Buckingham Palace or Westminster are in London would be sad. But Watford, which is not a major town, which you've said yourself is only 20 miles outside London? Bollocks.

Rubbish. It's a town. Everyone with half an ounce of common sense knows it's a town. Why would it be in London when it's a town in and of itself?

AccrualIntentions · 17/09/2017 13:38

Why wouldn't there be towns within Greater London? There are towns within other city regions. Greater Manchester includes Salford (actually that's a city), Stockport, Oldham and others. Towns in their own right but still part of Greater Manchester.
