Going to London tomorrow - what to do :(

Posting here for traffic, I am going to London tomorrow, train from here to Paddington, then Euston, then Watford Junction.

Having just seen the news about the bomb, I am now terrified. I rarely go to London and this is so scary. There will be 3 adults and 3 children aged 9, 10 and 13.

If we don't go, we lose £600, but what price your life or your kids life?

We are still thinking of going and doing bus or taxi from Paddington.

Has anyone got any advice on transport ?

What would you do?

That's as maybe, but you'd have to be pretty bloody thick to think that a town 20 miles away from a city was part of it.

Okay, we'll settle on you thinking I'm stupid for not appreciating that the town of Watford was not within the boundary of Greater London when it's a whole 20 miles away. I think you have to be pretty fucking stupid to expect the entire country to know or care where Watford is, so I'm really okay with that. You don't give a toss where places in the north are - I don't give a toss where places in the Home Counties are. We can either both be thick or neither of us. You choose.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 17/09/2017 13:43

I'm not sure anywhere inside the M25 can get all het up that people consider them part of London. Though I appreciate tiny distinctions are tremendously important when you're up close to 'em.

dolcezza99 · 17/09/2017 13:45

You don't give a toss where places in the north are

Really, does anyone?

AccrualIntentions · 17/09/2017 13:48

@dolce those who live there care deeply. Mixing up Sunderland and Newcastle is a big deal in these parts. The difference is we're not arrogant enough to care if people who don't live here mix them up. Because they don't live here, so why would they know?

So what is so significant about Watford that I'm missing out on by not knowing the ins and outs of its geography and history? I googled it (by the way, it's 17 miles outside London, not 20) and it appears to mainly be somewhere people live to commute into London.

dolcezza99 · 17/09/2017 13:54

There's nothing significant about Watford at all. There is on the other hand something significant about London, it being our captial city and all, and people's lack of knowledge as to what that constitutes is sad.

And of course, the fact that the OP was going there. Didn't it occur to her to look at a map to see where she was going?! Baffling.

HazelBite · 17/09/2017 13:56

As a Watford resident of 50 years I can tell you that Watford is just outside the boundary of Greater London it is in fact in the county of Hertfordshire. It is a town in its own right, with exceptionally good rail and tube links to London, bus routes to all major SE airports and by virtue of the M25 good road lnks to the rest of the UK.

Its quite a nice place to live!
And of course the jewel in the crown Harry Potter World

AccrualIntentions · 17/09/2017 13:57

Do I need to be able to list all the London boroughs to be able to alleviate your sadness? Which other insignificant places do I need to be able to place inside or outside the Greater London boundary? I've been informed about Richmond already thanks to a PP. Should I perhaps be able to answer a quiz about which Underground stops are in which zones? We'd best avoid zone 4 because that might contain places which are not in London.

Bromley isn't in Kent - it's been a London borough since the 1960s. Snobby people here love to say it's in Kent though as they don't want to say they live in SE London 😂

It's a 17 minute train journey from Victoria and in Zone 5.

JassyRadlett · 17/09/2017 14:01

Everyone with half an ounce of common sense knows it's a town.

You're going to have to explain how common sense leads to the knowledge of where Watford is relative to the borders of Greater London. I think you might be a bit confused there.

Why would it be in London when it's a town in and of itself?

Hi! I live in Kingston.

AccrualIntentions · 17/09/2017 14:03

@dolce Not really, no, is there somewhere you need to be? I'm not a goady fucker, just someone who fancied arguing against your bullshit proclamations that anyone who didn't know Watford was in Greater London was wilfully ignorant, sad and thick. For a more sensible response, @bananas seems to be saying it much better than me.

JassyRadlett · 17/09/2017 14:03

It's basic geography. If you don't know that, I pity you.

According to whom? The Watford Tourist Board?

dolcezza99 · 17/09/2017 14:04

Kingston has been a London borough since 1965. You'd think you'd know that if you lived there.

Oh dear. Kingston upon Thames is a borough. Kingston is a town (under the London Plan) that sits within the borough.

Very, very basic London geography. How very sad.

Do you want to keep going, or do you feel adequately silly now?

Says the person who has been goady all over threads today.

There really is no arguing with someone as stupid as you, Jassy. Carry on - you're the one making yourself look foolish.

Grin It's so inconvenient when people bring facts into the conversation when you're busy trying to belittle others for lack of knowledge, isn't it?

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 17/09/2017 14:13

Just report & ignore abusive posts, any sort of response is giving them what they want.

PamBeasleyHalpert · 17/09/2017 14:14

Watford is on the tube? Really? Which line?

Please don't make me have to direct you to the encyclopedic entries for the place you live in, Jassy. That would just be embarrassing for you.
