To think weekly shop prices are outrageous?

I was in Sainsbury's yesterday and was a bit surprised by the prices. We buy nearly the same items every week and whilst I expect some variation, some of the prices had me Shock Own brand hummous is usually £1, this week was £1.50. Gallia melon always £1 each, now also £1.50. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it Brexit now impacting the retailer and theyre no longer absorbing the change?

I was Hmm yesterday but read today that John Lewis has had profits halve due to Brexit and not yet passing the change on to customers.

UK prices are still pretty cheap compared to most other places. But you had better brace for more, what about the customs charges on everything once you are out of the EU? Your bills are going to double.

Is it melon season? I'm afraid they are going up in >shock horror< Lidl and Aldi too. Damn thoses seasons and farmers!

alltouchedout · 14/09/2017 11:14

I've noticed a rise in how much we are spending at Aldi- not a huge one, but a noticable one. Hmmm.

RitaMills · 14/09/2017 11:18

I've noticed this with my last few Sainsbury's shops. I shop online and usually spend just over £100 for a fortnights worth of food, it seems to have risen to £120+ for pretty much the same items.

theEagleIsLost · 14/09/2017 11:19

Sainsbury's is noticable more expensive than other supermarkets even tesco and Asda - though even aldi prices have been going up.

sirfredfredgeorge · 14/09/2017 11:22

Surely melon's are no longer in season, so you need to import them from further away (or there are just less Spanish ones), you'd expect an increase!

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 14/09/2017 11:25

Sainsbury's have definitely just had another round of price hikes- I did my online shop this morning and noticed a 5-10p increase on most items.

That being said, our prices are far lower than in the US, where we were recently on holiday - I'm guessing probably 25-50 percent lower on most items. It made sense of their large consumption of fast food tbh-cooking at home was often not noticeably cheaper.

BouleBaker · 14/09/2017 11:25

Butter has gone up a lot too. I'm expecting most things to rise.

meadowlark3 · 14/09/2017 11:30

Fair enough, melons are not in season, but that was just one example that came to mind. Hummous surely comes from canned beans?

Many items had 20-50p increase from just last week, a cauliflower was £1, up from 70p, British strawberries £2 up from £1.80.

Of course it's not just the amount that increased but, 50p is 50% increase on £1! My wage is certainly not increasing at the same pace Confused

LakieLady · 14/09/2017 11:30

I've noticed a lot of things have gone up, and by a few pence, but 50p or more.

Some of the things we used to buy regularly used to be on almost permanent "special offer", eg Lurpak spreadable. Now it's at full price and in Sainsburys it's gone up 50p.

Boots are as bad. Last time I bought eye make-up remover, it was £3.99. Bought some the other day and it was £5.49! And no "3 for 2" offer, either. It's had the label redesigned though, perhaps that's why ...

PurpleMinionMummy · 14/09/2017 11:43

I've noticed things creeping up at tesco too. The meatballs I buy shot up by 30p in one go.

theEagleIsLost · 14/09/2017 11:51

Butter has gone up a lot too

BCC article was looking at this - apparently dairy farmers didn't get paid enough for their milk so wnent under - so now pirce of butter has doubled or tripled so now raw ingredients cost more but butter makers can't pass full cost on so their business are at risk.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-41164625/why-is-the-price-of-butter-going-up

Bad harvest in Europe affected price of fruit and veg over summer and imports are dearer as pound has dropped - yet I've still got family telling me food prices aren't increasing and I'm imaging it Hmm.

Needalifeoverhaul · 14/09/2017 12:04

I shop in Asda and find it much cheaper generally than Sainsbury's. I think I paid 85p for a tub if their hummus last week. I agree though that on certain items prices are rising.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/09/2017 12:11

Tesco is the same. Their tub of spreadable butter used to be £1.75, it is now £2. I bought brocolli yesterday, it was always 45p for a head (is that the right expression, probably not) and it's now 50p.

Butter has really gone up, their was an article on the BBC news website recently about it, all to do with the price of milk.

araiwa · 14/09/2017 12:12

I think food prices are ridiculously cheap overall

Buying a banana in england that was grown in south america for a few pence seems impossible but thats what we do

Tilapia · 14/09/2017 12:15

It's because of Brexit. The pound has dropped making imports expensive. It's not unreasonable for supermarkets to pass on the cost.

fantasmasgoria1 · 14/09/2017 12:27

I shop at Aldi for the most part but I have found that the coop and Morrisons are the most expensive for the things I purchase! I don't use these regularly for this read! Sainsbury's I find not to be that bad! I have been shocked at how Tesco prices have gone up of late! I find that some dry goods can be bought at b&m or home bargains and are really cheap!

dustarr73 · 14/09/2017 12:30

I'm not in the UK but I've noticed Aldi and Lidl have got more expensive.

Phosphorus · 14/09/2017 12:36

Food in the UK is ridiculously cheap.

Even going across to Ireland, the difference is extraordinary.

Brexit will be an eye opener, for sure.

EssentialHummus · 14/09/2017 12:37

Absolutely happening, but possibly time to try a different supermarket too OP - Aldi/LIdl if you have them, or take advantage of "£20 off your first shop" type offers on delivery.

Getout21 · 14/09/2017 12:39

I have noticed increases too. As a pp said i'm always shocked at how cheap bananas.

PickAChew · 14/09/2017 12:40

I've noticed that prices all over the place have taken a hike, this month. Even the bread I buy from the baker in the marketplace has gone up 5p.

Madeyemoodysmum · 14/09/2017 12:45

Sainsbod has got ridiculous again. Only go in there for clothes and if they have sent me a decent voucher.

My main shop is aldi with a few adsa shops to get things aldi don't sell.

I also pop into savers for toiletries and cleaning. Washing stuff. By far the cheapest.

Madeyemoodysmum · 14/09/2017 12:46

Strawberries aren't in season either. You need to buy fruit in season or expect to pay more. .
