Our house is a semi and the ndn has a gate that is very noisy when opening and shutting. He has always been a bit late putting out his wheelie bin - often at midnight. They had very small children at the time this started so I felt sorry for them and didn't say anything even though it woke me up most weeks. He took the biscuit last night though- I woke at 4am and honestly thought we were being broken into. I jumped up opened window didn't realise it was humans shouted out that the police had been phoned and to f&@k off away from our property. He meekly shouted back it's me just putting out the bin. I'm so knackered today as couldn't get back to sleep afterwards. Am I being unreasonable to complain now about the more usual midnight run as well? I just feel he is so loud and has no consideration for others. Otherwise a perfect neighbour.

Sorry, what? He's a nun??

Stormwhale · 13/09/2017 21:18

If they are otherwise perfect neighbours then I would very nicely explain that it does wake you up and ask he does it at a more reasonable time.

Penny4UrThoughts · 13/09/2017 21:19

You didn't realise it was humans? Were you telling foxes you'd phoned the police?

NoSquirrels · 13/09/2017 21:22

Yes, I'd mention it. He'll be feeling bad he scared you, you can say "actually it often wakes me up at midnight, would you mind putting it out before 11pm (or whenever) latest?" He can explain why not (if he's an arse) or say "I'm so sorry, of course".

PeabodyTheGreat · 13/09/2017 21:23

If an otherwise perfect neighbour, I agree with pp and just mention it to him that it can wake you up- if he's as reasonable as appears he will probably stop the 12pm put outs

What nosquirrels said

5rivers7hills · 13/09/2017 21:26

He can put his bin out whenever he wants.

Sleep with ear plugs in if you're such a stress head / light sleeper.

@Penny4UrThoughts Grin

OP just go and ask him politely if he can please put his bin out at a reasonable time as it's waking you up. No need to make a big fuss.

Amammi · 13/09/2017 21:28

Thanks guys- I feel so foolish for the 4am over reaction but yes nothing ventured nothing gained. It might be he is totally unaware of how noisy it is. I'm sure he sleeps like a log himself as their babes are bigger now and full of energy.

My NDN's are always doing noisy things right outside my bedroom window late at night, including putting the bins out. The whole street has puts the right infront of my house.
Many times at about midnight she stands out the front gassing and laughing loudly with her daughter who lives a few doors down. A few times -in a tired state- I've slammed the window shut really loudly to make a point. That seems to have done the trick.
