Sorry, posting for traffic.

My 3.5 year old banged her face against the side of the baby gate and a tooth has come loose. I sort of 'snapped' it back into its place. Its wobbly but has stayed put (for now)

Went to the dentist who said she had a hairline fracture on both front teeth - i am gutted. Didn't say anymore and rushed us out. I suppose because it was closing time and he had made an exception to see us last minute.

I am very upset - does anyone have experience of this?

My daughter knocked a front tooth out when she was 3 years old. We searched for it, but it had fallen in bark chippings so we had to give up. She was gappy in photos until her adult teeth came through but there was no permanent damage, she has beautiful teeth still at 29!

beadyboo · 14/09/2017 16:40

You poor thing. My DD was pushed into a table at nursery when she was 2 and her front tooth was smashed straight out. I was devastated and people often commented or felt the need to point it out to us Confused
Because of the level of trauma to her mouth the dentist warned us that her adult tooth bud may have been damaged and I worried for years about whether she would get an adult tooth and if so would it be discoloured or mis-shapen.
I'm pleased to report that it grew perfectly healthy and straight when she was about 7.
I understand your panic totally, but remember it's a baby tooth and soon all her peers will have gorgeous gappy smiles too.

angelsgirls · 14/09/2017 16:51

My dd fell over when she was 1 with her dummy in and smashed her mouth, her tooth got pushed up into her gum, it grew back down a little wonky and discoloured then when she was 5 it just randomly snapped off high up, adult tooth came through fine though.

midnightmisssuki · 14/09/2017 19:14

Thanks all - webwill give her soft food for now. Any idea how long tooth might take to firm up?

My eldest did when she was 1.5years, the dentist pulled the tiny bit remaining out and she didn't need a GA for it.

She's 7 now, and the gap is still there. The teeth around it were clearly also damaged as they've all declined considerably, so keep an eye on all the surrounding teeth.

Her adult teeth aren't coming through quick enough for my liking! It would look so much better if her adult tooth would just come out to replace the gaps/poorly ones.

BayLeaves · 14/09/2017 19:19

My son's teeth were no longer wobbly after a couple of months or so when I went back to the dentist for a follow up, however I don't know when they actually got better as I didn't want to risk making it worse by "wobbling" them to check! I was so nervous I did the soft food slightly longer than the dentist advised, closer to 3 weeks, and even after that I was careful for another month or so not to give anything that would put a lot of force on the front teeth, so I avoided giving him whole apples or crusty baguettes for a while as well.

onlymyselftoanswerto · 14/09/2017 19:52

My 2.5year old knocked both front teeth out at softplay (wasn't very soft really Hmm) he had a gap for years after but both teeth eventually grew down in the normal place. Accidents happen, don't beat yourself up Flowers

No 2 son tripped whilst rushing about and smacked his upper gum on a wooden step aged about 5, four front teeth went grey but second teeth are fine (26 now!)

mygorgeousmilo · 14/09/2017 20:09

My poor boy put his front teeth through his skin when he fell, so not only made the tooth go grey but he had a thin scar just at the top of his lip. His big teeth came through beautifully and the scar has faded. I get why you're upset about it, I was devastated! Btw after it went grey it seemed to go white again, then eventually fell out and the new one came through.

midnightmisssuki · 14/09/2017 21:28

Thank you - can anyone advise how long before the tooth (might) turn grey?

For us it was about 4 weeks I think, maybe even longer.

Dd knocked one tooth out and broke half off another, also falling against the safety gate. I cried like a baby thinking I had ruined her. Looking back, 18 years later, it seems like a complete non-event. Adult teeth came through, the only one that didn't develop normally was in a different part of her mouth and dentist puts it down to antibiotics at a crucial stage of development.

AtHomeDadGlos · 15/09/2017 09:25

My almost two year old face planted her cot the other night. We didn't realise at the time as she oftens bumps into it at night so we just re-settled her for a sleep. The cot was splattered with blood in the morning and she had a bloodied crusty face - it looked the aftermath of a boxing fight.

Bruised gum so the dentist reckons. Front tooth looks a little pushed back but not wobbly. Time will tell.

dentydown · 15/09/2017 10:01

My son bashed his face and knocked his front tooth back when he was 3. It fell out a couple of years earlier than it should and he had about two years of having a missing front tooth! He eventually grew a big tooth! But he was pleased he got tooth fairy money early!

OnlyToday · 28/10/2017 19:43

Looks like we were really unlucky then...

DD knocked out both her baby teeth about 2 years and 11 months. (I know the date as it was the week she was a flower girl at my DSis's wedding 😂)
She didn't damage her gums and we thought it was not going to be a problem. Unfortuanately it then took ages and ages before her adult teeth came through and when they did they struggled to emerge and they came out wonky and very buck toothed. We were told by dentists and dentist surgeons (can't remember the proper name) that it was because her baby teeth were knocked out prematurely. Apparently it can then be difficult for the adult teeth to emerge normally as the gums harden and the other teeth crown the vacant spot.
DD was the last person in her class to get her adult front teeth.

She needed braces for a long while which cost us thousands but she now has beautiful teeth.

Dustysparrow · 28/10/2017 20:04

My dd did this twice! The first time was when she was running (aged about 4) and she tripped and fell on a gravel path landing directly on her face. She knocked two teeth clean out and loosened two others - her mouth was literally swimming in blood with teeth floating in it, it was absolutely horrendous. She went into shock, very pale, shaking and nearly falling asleep, it was awful. However an hour or two later she perked up and felt better. And had a bumper haul from the tooth fairy.

The other time we were at the beach on a very windy day, she was holding a bucket and spade, the wind caught the bucket and it whacked her face. Cue blood and another tooth gone.

You couldn't make it up. Luckily they were all milk teeth and all her adult teeth have come through normally.

Sallystyle · 28/10/2017 20:15

My son lost a few front teeth playing at Nursery. He fell on concrete.

His adult teeth when they come through were really bad and he had to have a lot of dental work and braces. However, that may have happened if he didn't lose him the way he did, so who knows if it was down to his accident or not.

happiestcamper · 28/10/2017 20:42

DS fractured his tooth and it 'died' and went black when he was about 4. It then went back to being white again. we thought all was ok, however when he reached 7 he developed an abscess on the tooth which the dentist said was due to previous trauma. He had it removed and new tooth has grown in with no problems at all

Shouldnotwouldnot · 28/10/2017 21:10

Mine lost half her front tooth tooth at 18 months. I was so upset and worried about photos. Now I don’t even notice it, it’s just her!
