AIBU to ask if any of your v.young toddlers has knocked a tooth out?

Sorry, posting for traffic.

My 3.5 year old banged her face against the side of the baby gate and a tooth has come loose. I sort of 'snapped' it back into its place. Its wobbly but has stayed put (for now)

Went to the dentist who said she had a hairline fracture on both front teeth - i am gutted. Didn't say anymore and rushed us out. I suppose because it was closing time and he had made an exception to see us last minute.

I am very upset - does anyone have experience of this?

I have experience of my daughter smashing her teeth into things. One was knocked out of alignment (still is). In my experience dentists give you the worst case scenario; I came out feeling terrible, thinking that her tooth would go grey/ black/ fall out. In fact, one did go a bit grey, but then went white again. None has fallen out.
Also, bear in mind 3.5 isn't that far off losing milk teeth- my eldest starting losing at 4 and has all 4 front adult teeth top and bottom at just 7 years old.

I know how upsetting it is but it might be just fine.

My brother did when he was small and his other front one went grey. That fell out as normal and then the new ones grew through as you'd expect.

At 3 DS banged his front teeth so they went grey. No problems at all. I did notice when he went to school there was a huge number of boys that had grey teeth or had teeth knocked out! Amazing, never noticed this with DD's friends, although think they spent time upside down on climbing frames rather than being smacked in the face by swings.

Thank you all - i am really sat here in tears and feeling so upset with myself. I should have caught her before she fell. I should have pulled her off that stair gate etc etc.

It's not your fault!! I know exactly how you're feeling. When my daughter bashed her teeth on the wooden floor I think it actually was my fault because I wasn't watching her properly But we all blame ourselves even when we couldn't have prevented it.

thanks Merchant - i know in the grand scheme of things, i shouldn't beat myself up over it too much. But i am. I actually have been looking at every forum i can find about hairline fractures/discolouration of toddler teeth/loose toddler teeth.

Its not looking great - a friend hasn't been helpful by saying i 'should take all the baby pictures now'.

My daughter smashed her front tooth when she was 3. Went purple (!), I was gutted, and had a daily reminder of how stupid I'd been, etc, etc. She's 9 now, and her adult tooth grew through a normal colour, thank goodness. It should be OK.

I had one on my front right tooth as a toddler and niece has a hairline fracture on one currently. Mine was wobbly for a while, that's all. Niece's - nothing happened! They may discolour or they may do nothing. Adult teeth should grow normally. Don't beat yourself up either

My DD has a massively chipped front tooth. It happens.

On another note she headbutted me and my front teeth recessed in slightly and went wobbly (and hurt a lot). The dentist said the muscle/ligament around the teeth will gradually move to support the new position. And it has - so maybe the same will apply to your DC?

DS2 knocked half his one front tooth out when he was about 18 months old on the bath. He ended up having to have it removed under general anesthesic.

It suits him now 😂

Another one whose DD had a grey tooth. Her second teeth came in just fine.

I know of a child who had all of his front teeth kicked out by a horse aged three. I won't comment with my opinion as to his parenting!
But, his adult teeth grew through normally.

My daughter lost part of one of her front teeth aged about 3 when she fell off her trike. The rest of the tooth remained wobbly and was slightly crooked until it fell out when the new one came through.

New one was fine, fortunately.

Chipped my front baby tooth slipping in the bath aged 3 - in the other one must have been damaged too so had both removed under anaesthetic. Don't remember anything traumatic at all and adult teeth absolutely fine.

I knocked out a front tooth when I was two. I tripped over something in the garden when my mum's back was turned. I just had a gap there until the second one grew through. You can see the gap in photos of me as a small child, but I wasn't bothered by it at all.

Accidents happen. Your dd will be fine, even if she should happen to lose the teeth.

DD fell in to my parents back step at the age of about 3. She knocked one tooth out (which was put back in) and bashed another couple of teeth, but none were broken. She also needed a stitch in her lower lip. Her adult teeth came through just fine and there was no lasting damage except to my nerves.

My three year old knocked his whole front tooth out. I just shoved it back in..that was 6 months ago and it's still white and still there!

My DD fell face first out of my bed aged about 2.5.
She knocked both too front teeth very loose. One stabilised, the other stayed a bit wobbly and turned grey. She had to have it removed under general anaesthetic aged 3.2. It was traumatic for me, she wasn't bothered really - the tooth fairy brought her a dolly at the hospital, she was happy! She's now 8 and has adult teeth as we expected - crooked but so are her dad's and both siblings so we expected that. Otherwise they are healthy.

My brother did - smashed both his front teeth out at nursery on a doorstep!!

He had a gap for a long time until his big teeth grew but he was absolutely fine. Well... I assume he squawked a bit, but after that he was fine!

My DD smashed her mouth on the corner of a toy oven when she was 12MO and just started toddling. Tore her frenulum but her teeth survived.

DS smashed his front two teeth after coming off his bike when he was 4 - temporary veneers, which fell off within days, then he didn't bother. Teeth fine now (he's 11).

I smashed my front teeth at 11.

We do fabulously well with teeth in our family

Yup. Got four boys, three of whom had chipped baby teeth and one of whom knocked his brother's two bottom teeth out.

My eldest knocked his tooth when he was 3. The dentist had to pull it out. He still has the gap now at 7 and the dentist has said it will be his last tooth to grow in and probably won't be straight.
