Sorry, posting for traffic.

My 3.5 year old banged her face against the side of the baby gate and a tooth has come loose. I sort of 'snapped' it back into its place. Its wobbly but has stayed put (for now)

Went to the dentist who said she had a hairline fracture on both front teeth - i am gutted. Didn't say anymore and rushed us out. I suppose because it was closing time and he had made an exception to see us last minute.

I am very upset - does anyone have experience of this?

Preschool teacher here - grey teeth, chipped teeth and missing teeth are so, so common and not at all something to worry about. It's so easy to do. Hell I broke my front top teeth at age 9 and have crowns now. Your daughter's teeth, even if damaged, will grow back. Mine won't! :p

EElisavetaOfBelsornia · 13/09/2017 22:25

Yes. My DD2 had a wobbly tooth fro falling in the garden, it eventually came out. She was delighted as she finally got a tooth fairy visit like her sister! She will be happy for 3 years but it happens. Don't feel guilty!

EElisavetaOfBelsornia · 13/09/2017 22:25

Happy? Hopefully! I meant gappy.

midnightmisssuki · 13/09/2017 22:41

Thanks all for being so kind and sharing your stories. I am feeling a little better. We checked her tooth before bed and its slightly wobbly still - will leave it and make a dentists appt next week. For those who's children teeth turned a different colour - how long before this happens and did it revert back?

My DS knocked his beautiful new, just grow through adult tooth out (well chipped it in half). I know it's horrible but be thankful it's a baby tooth...

butteredbarmbrack · 13/09/2017 22:52

Must be something about 3 year olds..... DD1 tripped at the childminder's when her sister was a few weeks old. I had to go meet them at children's A and E, fun... One front tooth was knocked out and it was only a few days later at the dentist when I said the gap looked big to me that they realised the neighbouring tooth was knocked back up into the gum. The swelling had made it hard to see. We had to have it checked every couple of months for a while to make sure the displaced tooth wasn't causing problems.

She had a gappy few years and eating apples that weren't cut up was a challenge! All fine now, she's 13 and adult teeth came through as normal, eventually.

DeadDoorpost · 13/09/2017 23:19

Oh, I was the cause for my brother losing his 2 front teeth. I pushed him off the chair because he annoyed me (I was 3 he was 1) and the dentist actually said that the teeth had gone back into the gums and if you look at his adult teeth you can see the marks on them still from the damage. The baby ones had dented them but then grown back through so it felt as though he'd had 3 sets of front teeth. He was lucky.
I'd keep an eye on them but seeing as they're not the adult teeth even if they fall out it won't be long (hopefully) until the adult ones come through.

(And parents still don't know it was my fault... I've never told them but brother knows. He seems to have not told them either. Such a good brother.)

My son knocked a tooth out (probably a bit older though) one Christmas eve.

So no dentist visit. Main problem was fainting husband as he doesn't cope well with the sight of blood!

Son is now an adult and all his teeth are fine.

Stoptherideiwannagetoff · 13/09/2017 23:37

Our DS snapped 4 front teeth falling on a toy at 2, had all 4 top teeth removed. It didn't bother him and we got used to it very quickly, people didn't really notice and we have lots of gappy pictures Grin. He had more trouble remembering he could bite an apple properly once his adult teeth came through as he was so used to biting on the side. Try not to get too upset - it's only temporary and won't bother dc in the slightest.

midnightmisssuki · 14/09/2017 09:18

Thanks seems ok this morning. Tooth is wobbly but still there. Daughter is none the wiser - just mummy feeling like shit!

When it was raining, my sister fell and smashed her mouth off her metal scooter. Her bottom tooth and gum went purple - went back to normal after about 18 months. We were told that if she knocked it/it started bleeding, we were to take her straight to the dentist. She never did thankfully!

She has a hairline fracture in one of her adult teeth from slipping (in the rain!) and smashing her front top teeth off the concrete floor. All is fine Grin

All teeth grew perfectly and all healthy.
Kids always fall/have accidents/cause some kind of injury to themselves that stresses us adults out, please don't beat yourself up! Flowers

MrsMargeSimpson · 14/09/2017 09:40

My son fell and bashed his half erupted front tooth on his first birthday! He has a (really nasty looking) gash in it half way down now Blush He's 6! Dentist said not to worry as it won't affect adult ones. A friend's little one knocked both front teeth out at 3. He just had a gap for a long time.

yecartmannew · 14/09/2017 10:21

My son had knocked both his front teeth out (in separate accidents) by the time he was 2.5.

His second teeth grew in normally.

He is still a clumsy-itus though at 22.

midnightmisssuki · 14/09/2017 11:52

Thanks yecartmannew - i just think at 3.5 its such a young age to not have a little tooth! I guess i just feeling sad and i know its silly - i keep thinking and replaying the incident in my head. She's already forgotten about it!

Its the tormenting ourselves with "what ifs" and "should have dones" that marks us out as parents!

My youngest is now 20 and it still doesn't stop.

midnightmisssuki · 14/09/2017 12:04

Yes - you are right. wish i didn't feel this way!

Ds fell and one tooth turned black just after 2nd birthday. Got an abscess behind it so it was removed (still 2). New one grew in fine. Biggest problem was that as he's also tall, everyone assumed he was a few years older than he actually was so expected him to behave better!

YouBeOwlette · 14/09/2017 12:26

My DD chipped her front tooth at 9m. I noticed because I was BF and it was like a dagger Grin Pretty sure she did it grinding her teeth as no incidents had occurred. Dentist advised filing it with a very fine emery board to take the sharp edge off.
Like you, I cried and cried! Everyone said it's only a baby tooth etc. but I was so upset!
She's now 3.5, it's only visible in some photos and really no big deal.

cece · 14/09/2017 12:27

My son knocked a tooth out when he was about 2 years old.

He had a gap there till his adult teeth came in. He's 14 now and his tooth is fine. You'd never know!

cantfindauser · 14/09/2017 15:30

My son smashed a tooth at 18 months. Had to have it out too. He was ok but I was mess!

Fax · 14/09/2017 15:37

DS1 knocked one out at nursery aged 3. He had a gap until the adult tooth came through at 7/8. The dentist said it would be fine but the adult tooth had slight discolouration due to the trauma.
Actually worse was DS2 who chipped an adult front tooth aged 7 - permanent damage.

midnightmisssuki · 14/09/2017 16:19

Thanks all - dentist said is 50/50 if the tooth will stay in till she's older and if it'll turn a different colour. absolutely gutted .

KarateKitten · 14/09/2017 16:23

My 1.5yr old has smashed her two front teeth, it looks pretty funny when she grins as two sharp fangs are left. They'll be like this till she's 6😭 Unfortunately one is gone back so is dead at the root and we are praying for no infections or abscesses in the coming years. Otherwise she'll need a GA to have it removed:( But she's fine otherwise. I do sometimes wonder if it's hurting her a little as she pokes her finger up the nostril on that side and whinges but kids do stuff like that anyway so it's hard to know for now.

KarateKitten · 14/09/2017 16:23

Gone black

BayLeaves · 14/09/2017 16:29

OP did the dentist not advise you to stick to a soft food diet for a couple of weeks??! If so please do! Exactly the same happened to our son and the dentist said soft food only for two weeks, it's gone very slightly grey but thankfully it's set again so shouldn't fall out. I'm sure if we hadn't done the soft food it would have come out while eating some crusty bread or something.

Sandwiches with no crusts, beans, egg, brioche for brekky, soft fruit, mash, yoghurt etc all fine!
