I went to stonehenge this year and whilst I was trying to get in touch with my inner druid, trying to project historical importance and mystery onto the place, I just couldn't escape the feeling that I was just looking at some very old stones and it was actually (whisper) a little bit boring!! Dh thought it was all marvellous though so I have never told him!!!

Oh lots of people have said it already but I came on to say that I went to see the David fully expecting to have a bit of a giggle and be underwhelmed and it's just absolutely incredible.

HollaHolla · 13/09/2017 07:11

I was also underwhelmed with the Mona Lisa - so crowded and noisy in that one gallery. There are so many other amazing pieces in the Louvre though - the Winged Victory of Samothrace is my favourite.

Also, I was disappointed with New York in general. Love the Chrysler building and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but was just a bit 'meh' about the rest of it. Confused

paradoxicalInterruption · 13/09/2017 07:11

Avebury is far more impressive than Stonehenge, but you need time for a wander. Grand Canyon, camped down the bottom so could see all the light changes and the stars and the silence.

Mona Lisa, I got overwhelmed by the crowds, but loved the napoleons rooms!

Venice is stunning.

Littlecaf · 13/09/2017 07:13

The Little Rock in Little Rock, Arkansas. I think you're supposed to be underwhelmed by it though Grin

Was more impressed with the NY skyline than the Statue of Liberty. Also wasn't that impressed with Broadway/Fifth Ave/Times Square. Not the cultural shopping & entertainment experience I was lead to believe. Loved Little Italy though and Central Park.

Was a bit underwhelmed with the Royal Crescent in Bath. Also Bath as a whole, a World Heritage Site my arse.

The Tynwald on the Isle of Man - we drove past it twice and missed it; it's just a small hill next to some houses. Very underwhelming.

CrazyKittenSmile · 13/09/2017 07:15

I was also underwhelmed by the Taj Mahal.

FairyPenguin · 13/09/2017 07:16

Sydney - we enjoyed the ferry ride and the Botanic Gardens. Also the walk up one of the bridge towers. Once we started walking around the city we were distinctly underwhelmed. Just not much atmosphere and perhaps it was the lack of history and architecture that we're used to seeing in European cities.

Another vote for Stonehenge too.

ethelfleda · 13/09/2017 07:17

And a second vote for the great wall of China here... although I loved Beijing itself.

Noodledoodlefan · 13/09/2017 07:17

I'm so glad other people thought the Statue of Liberty seemed smaller than expected. I read somewhere that very well proportioned , well executed things seem smaller that they really are.

The Chrysler building , on the other hand , was the loveliest building I have ever seen and made me all teary eyed.

I was hugely disappointed by Paris. Only "great city" I have seen that I haven't bonded with.
Mona Lisa is small, dingy and disappointing .
Lass I am blown away by "Lady with Ermine". Gorgeous!

Agree Stonehenge was a big letdown. I think it's because you can't interact with the stones. You have to use a stupid pathway and listen to strangers complaining about how dear the ice creams are.
Avebury is much better especially if you get there early morning out of season. You get to walk amongst the stones and touch them .

MyBreadIsEggy · 13/09/2017 07:17

THe pyramids.
The picture you see in the brochure and the excursion posters in very different from the reality.....it was more like a windy rubbish dump, with newspapers, crisp packets and plastic bag and blowing past my head.

sooperdooper · 13/09/2017 07:19

Barcelona, I just wasn't taken with the city at all & I wouldn't rush to go back

Teddy7878 · 13/09/2017 07:22

Edinburgh castle! It was far too busy and chaotic. It does look impressive in its setting though

Icequeen01 · 13/09/2017 07:25

Another vote for the Mannequin Pis. Went to see it years ago and oh how we laughed! Oddly, I was really moved by the tiny statue of Blackfriars Bobby in Edinburgh though.

The landmark which I have been most moved by was the Alhambra in Spain. Just breathtaking.

LostInShoebiz · 13/09/2017 07:28

I agree with Sydney. Like Manchester but with less character except you've flown 24 hours to see it. Melbourne on the other hand, fantastic.

Katkincake · 13/09/2017 07:29

Been said before but Niagara Falls (Canadian side) loved the boat trip but the tackiness of the place and the scale of it wasn't as big as I was imaging - think my view of it was set by the superman film when he saves the boy who fell off the rails Grin

Also underwhelmed Empire State both times I went - think it was being shouted at by stewards and the overcrowding - TOTR much, much better

Blown away by the history and age of the roman forum first time, second time a bit more meh.

BeyondThePage · 13/09/2017 07:30

Anything that is "just stones" - Stonehenge, Ring of Brodgar, various "castles"etc...

What blew me away was my first visit to Westminster tube station - WOW - impressive!

LostInShoebiz · 13/09/2017 07:30

Also, Versailles. Exactly like Hampton Court with a bit more gold about the place. Not worth queuing for two and a half hours for.

BlueThesaurusRex · 13/09/2017 07:30

I thought The Colosseum in Rome was a bit shit tbf.

I guess you need to use your imagination a bit there.

LostInShoebiz · 13/09/2017 07:31

I agree about Westminster station. And St Pancras too.

eurochick · 13/09/2017 07:31

Buckingham Palace. To a child brought up on 80s Disney it did not look like a place the queen should live in.

waitingforlifetostart · 13/09/2017 07:32

Grand Canyon, Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Statue of Liberty.

Yerroblemom1923 · 13/09/2017 07:33

The John Lennon mosaic in Central Park. Smaller than I expected. Although CP was much bigger than I expected!

FlakeBook · 13/09/2017 07:34

Stonehenge, absolutely!
Ironbridge

The Empire State Building
The Golden Gate Bridge
And yes to Mona Lisa.

SukiTheDog · 13/09/2017 07:35

Paris. Don't get all the fuss.

Tour · 13/09/2017 07:35

Yes to the White House. The rest of Washington was v impressive tho.
