I went to stonehenge this year and whilst I was trying to get in touch with my inner druid, trying to project historical importance and mystery onto the place, I just couldn't escape the feeling that I was just looking at some very old stones and it was actually (whisper) a little bit boring!! Dh thought it was all marvellous though so I have never told him!!!

The Grand Canyon and the Great Barrier Reef.

Didactylos · 12/09/2017 23:38

manikin pis
tis very small

Midge1978 · 12/09/2017 23:39

What was wrong with the Grand Canyon?!

Burj khalifa in Dubai. Not the building but the view from
It, or lack of.

ftw · 12/09/2017 23:40

All of them that I've seen with the exception of the Eiffel Tower.

I will never seek out another.

I can't imagine how anything like that could impress you know though - you've seen so many photos before you see it, I don't know what your average attraction could do to out perform its own pics.

(Kind of how you look better in your fb profile pic than real life...)

notacooldad · 12/09/2017 23:40

The Little Mermaid at Copenhagen.
We hadn't gone out looking for it but stumbled across it. I was definitely underwhelmed!

Domino20 · 12/09/2017 23:41

Edinburgh Castle. Too much of a military museum and not enough history.

notacooldad · 12/09/2017 23:42

Many famous paintings have been disappointing, in particular 'The Scream'

gingerscot · 12/09/2017 23:42

The pyramids/sphinx. I expected a mystical, magical place in the desert. I got... lots of beggars/sales people/McDonalds. Gutted.

Awed by the Grand Canyon though!!

Beedoo123 · 12/09/2017 23:42

The White House... its tiny!

Midge1978 · 12/09/2017 23:43

Oh gosh yes The Mona Lisa - queued for bloody ages to see a small dull painting that I had already seen emblazoned over every item in the gift shop!

InThisTogether · 12/09/2017 23:44

The Mona Lisa. Tiny and so hideously overcrowded with tourists taking selfies.

Had to walk past 3 Da Vinci paintings nearby to get to it though, and they were fab!

ethelfleda · 12/09/2017 23:44

The Taj Mahal

Agra is a dump, the queue to get in was horrendous and they were really strict and then the landmark itself was very underwhelming. We were there for about 45 minutes and then fucked off for breakfast Smile

Also - Sydney opera house wasn't overly spectacular either!

Midge1978 · 12/09/2017 23:44

Mcdonalds at the pyramids?! Nooo!

Edinburgh Castle, Stirling castle is so much more interesting and impressive.

HolgerDanske · 12/09/2017 23:44

I was gonna say, it's not a secret at all, I was and am very vocal about it: Same as you - Stonehenge.

My second thought has already been mentioned - the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen. I'm Danish so I've always known 'the truth' about her, but I feel sorry for tourists who are expecting something extraordinary. I mean she's nice and everything, but it's literally just a lifesize mermaid sitting on a rock, nothing imposing about her.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 12/09/2017 23:44

Ayers Rock

A very big rock that's it

bunningsbunny · 12/09/2017 23:47

Paris. And Dublin. Very disappointed by both of them.

Flowersandjellybeans · 12/09/2017 23:48

I spotted this post and was hoping to be the first to jump in with the little mermaid in Copenhagen, but alas, was beaten to it.

Little indeed.

More locally the top of Snowdonia, couldn't believe how many people there were at the top, considering how few people we saw on the way up!

WetWang · 12/09/2017 23:49

Trevi Fountain is tiny. I thought it would be huge and the Vatican, so many beggars with children outside a building of such vast wealth was disgusting.

gingerscot · 12/09/2017 23:50

Yep midge, sorry. I have a fabulous photo that everyone aaahs over of the sphinx with a pyramid behind it and a clear blue sky. When I look at it all I can think is "I was standing in front of McDonald's when I took that...."

gingerscot · 12/09/2017 23:51

I liked the little mermaid. Loved Copenhagen!

elephantoverthehill · 12/09/2017 23:52

The only waterfall on the Isle of Wight. It is very small, I dragged my family to see it. OS map and compass used. If I stood on a rock on the beach and weed it would be greater gush than the IW waterfall.

HolgerDanske · 12/09/2017 23:53

I like her too, she's sweet. And Copenhagen is my favourite city in the world. But they do make such a big deal of her!

Tailypo · 12/09/2017 23:53

Didactylos felt the same about Manneken Pis - it's really small! And the Mona Lisa as well :(

Also, totally off-topic but I recently went to see the statue of David by Michelangelo in Florence. I wasn't sure what to expect and was hoping not to be disappointed, and it was absolutely bloody amazing!!! Anyone else seen it?
