I went to stonehenge this year and whilst I was trying to get in touch with my inner druid, trying to project historical importance and mystery onto the place, I just couldn't escape the feeling that I was just looking at some very old stones and it was actually (whisper) a little bit boring!! Dh thought it was all marvellous though so I have never told him!!!

Hoover dam for me too. Just felt like a big reservoir.

SalrycLuxx · 12/11/2019 19:44
  1. Mona Lisa
  2. Bruxelles Statue of little boy having a wee
  3. Bran castle in Romania
  4. Buckingham palace
Mummadeeze · 12/11/2019 19:49

Pompeii, Mayan Ruins - I just don’t have the imagination to enjoy them as they are literally mainly rubble!!! Was so disappointed by both and would never go and see any ‘ruins’ again.

Katkincake · 12/11/2019 19:51

Niagara falls, not as big as I imagined, but my only real reference to them was from watching superman as a kid!

Miketv3 · 12/11/2019 19:56

The pyramids. I couldn’t believe they were right next to a housing estate. Cairo was a shithole too. Would never go back there.

Lasvegas · 12/11/2019 23:33

Pyramids at Giza.

GunpowderGelatine · 12/11/2019 23:38

@GoodbyeRosie 100% agree about the Natural History Museum, I took my kids in the summer and found it all so dull and overcrowded. Nothing whatsoever of note in there.

cafenoirbiscuit · 12/11/2019 23:41

Sistine Chapel and the endless amount of art before you get there. See one fat cherub, seen em all

Babynamechangerr · 13/11/2019 01:10

I haven't rtft but I can't be the first person to mention Christ the redeemer. What a waste of time that was. Definitely not a wonder of the world.

Tillygetsit · 13/11/2019 01:24

The Grand Canyon. It's just a big hole.

MKUltrachic · 13/11/2019 02:15

I knew this was Stonehenge before I opened the post. I’ll add Versailles - waste of a day that could have been spent chilling out in Paris!!

LatinLanguage · 13/11/2019 02:25

Edinburgh. It’s a crappy city - I used to live and work there. Festival season is an extra special form of hell. I do like the castle though, and Holyrood.

Grand Canyon was underwhelming, but probably only because I’d already been to Zion and Canyonlands.

Paris is a shithole, though there are some lovely buildings. The Eiffel Tower is horrible and the Mona Lisa is in no way the best painting in the Louvre.

Didn’t rate Cyprus either - not somewhere I’d go back to.

alltoomuchrightnow · 13/11/2019 02:32

Sydney Opera House... it's kind of cream/ pale beige, making it look grubby

Elbowedout · 13/11/2019 02:57

Another vote for Niagara Falls here. I went to the American side and I thought it was like Blackpool but less classy.

DonKeyshot · 13/11/2019 03:42

I lived there for 6 months and it truly was wonderful wonderful Copenhagen, but I'm another who was underwhelmed by the Little Mermaid.

I think I was expecting it to be the size of the Statue of Liberty and it was a shock to see a small statue sitting on a rock, although it didn't stop me buying a little replica as a souvenir of some very good times. Smile

BritWifeinUSA · 13/11/2019 03:59

The Batu Caves. Took ages to get there and very underwhelming. Bora Bora.

Myheadisamess31 · 13/11/2019 08:04

Notre dame took my breath away. Truly beautiful

Cherrysoup · 13/11/2019 21:34

Reading the early posts on here, pp saying they were horrified by the amount of dead coral at the Great Barrier Reef, erm, caused by
pollution from tourists visiting ie pp complaining! And someone moaned that there’s no shelter from the rain at Giants Causeway, well, no shit, Sherlock! Bonkers, along with the pp saying famous ancient monuments are ‘just stones’. Confused

Crafting1Queen · 13/11/2019 22:59

Angel of the North, ugly big industrial corrugated metal structure & the "wings" are so out of proportion, I keep expecting to hear it's keeled over to one side, or one of the wings has snapped off.

alltoomuchrightnow · 13/11/2019 23:40

I was in awe of Angel of the North!
But..didn't like Malta. Thought it was pretty ugly and soulless, barren. Not being IN the sea..that was stunning, as was the lagoon, but inland.. not very inspiring, and the little harbour towns were just full of rubbish

alltoomuchrightnow · 13/11/2019 23:40

Hoover Dam was completely meh
The Statue of Liberty is beautiful but so small!

1Morewineplease · 14/11/2019 00:03

Land’s End. RIP off re photos and very underwhelming.
What a great thread though!

heath48 · 14/11/2019 00:17

The Blarney Stone.

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/11/2019 08:40

Niagara falls, not as big as I imagined, The waterfall into the main chamber in Gaping Gill ( a cave in Yorkshire) is higher than the Niagara Falls.

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/11/2019 08:47

So what? If they want to merely tick off the famous pictures and pose for pictures that's their look out. It doesn't hurt you. It does, if you want to look at the pictures and contemplate them, and your view is blocked by dozens of people waving their mobiles.
