I went to stonehenge this year and whilst I was trying to get in touch with my inner druid, trying to project historical importance and mystery onto the place, I just couldn't escape the feeling that I was just looking at some very old stones and it was actually (whisper) a little bit boring!! Dh thought it was all marvellous though so I have never told him!!!

Since it was mentioned while I posted - Venice
Loved it and it exceeded expectations. Then again we went during a less busy period and didn't stay too long - that may be the secret.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 13/09/2017 02:40

Lake Garda: too busy, too hot and too many people. I'm sure its lovely without all the other tourists and without 38c temps. I know we were just unlucky with the heat but it was so bad we came home early.

Agree with all about Edinburgh castle, such a disappointment.

Warwick castle, too much going on, not enough just being a stunning castle.

Best castle we have been to was Caenarfon, its amazing.

Littlepleasures · 13/09/2017 02:42

Another vote for the Giants Causeway. Nothing giant about it and got drenched when the heavens opened with absolutely nowhere to shelter.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 13/09/2017 02:58

Boys Chatsworth is amazingShock Not the house though tbf, thats just a Stately pile. The gardens are incredible though with the fountains in operation. We loved it so much we are going again later this year.

weaselwomble · 13/09/2017 02:59

Too my utter, utter shame - Machu Pichu.
Although I think that was mainly to do with all the steps and the heat. In my defence I didn't know any of the history before I got there either.

weaselwomble · 13/09/2017 03:00

*To, obviously

slothface · 13/09/2017 03:04

Vegas and Disneyland. I found them quite grotesque.

Loved the Grand Canyon though

emmyrose2000 · 13/09/2017 03:06

Stonehenge. Just a bunch of rocks beside a noisy road. No mystique at all.

Bay of Islands, NZ.

Republic of Ireland. The people were very rude and unfriendly. Longest week of our lives. Couldn't wait to leave.

Universal Studios, California.

Disneyland, California - the first time I went. Have since been back many more times and love it.

FanDabbyFloozy · 13/09/2017 03:30

Edinburgh is nowhere near as nice as the locals think it is. I struggle to see it's attraction. Glasgow has life and character but Edinburgh? Pah

Dixiestampsagain · 13/09/2017 03:33

I must be easily pleased- I liked lots of the places mentioned including Edinburgh Castle, Lands End, Disney in Florida, Paris, Windsor Castle etc. I particularly love Big Ben, and although inlibes in London for 4 years I still have to go there every time I visit. I do agree with Las Ramblas- nothing special at all.

MumBod · 13/09/2017 04:22

Sorrento. The backstreets were nice, but mainly it was a traffic-strangulated hole with fuck all to do and tiny filthy beaches that you had to pay to use Angry

Disneyworld. Fuck off selling me stuff.

The Epcot Center. Oh Jesus. I dragged my family away from Universal Studios to waste a day there, and it was so monumentally shit that I've never lived in down. To this day, having a bad idea is known in this house as 'Doing an Epcot' Blush

Dixiestampsagain · 13/09/2017 04:33

We loved Epcot, MumBod, and found loads of things to do (Soarin', Test Track and the new Frozen ride are great, and the 'countries' are great for kids to do the trail around. Maybe it's the age of Kids when you take them that makes a difference (ours are quite small). They did, however, prefer Universal, to be fair!!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 13/09/2017 04:40

Each to their own but I'm struggling to see how anyone could not like Paris, Venice, Copenhagen , Edinburgh (the city whuch hosts the biggest arts festival in the world and which Glasgow doesn't begin to match) or Dublin.

Or even Brussels for that matter (I'm intrigued how you could be there and not get round to the Grand Place)

I think I must be easily pleased - other than not liking Guadi that much I can't think of anywhere that has let me down - even Gaudi was more a case not liking the look of his stuff rather than not being impressed.

Unicornsandrainbows3 · 13/09/2017 04:51

Eiffel tower and Paris in general. Very disappointing.

fustercluckery · 13/09/2017 04:52

Lourdes. I'm not religious at all, but I found the town to be shabby and full of shops peddling overpriced religious tat (I actually wanted one of the models of the Virgin Mary surrounded by flashing fairy lights and singing Ave Maria just for kitsch value but at 70 francs - this was 1986 - they were taking the piss), and the severely disabled and ill in wheelchairs and on stretchers, hoping for a cure, I found deeply disturbing. My husband (then bf) has MS and I found the whole attitude to disability as something evil to be cured very distasteful. It reminded me of a tatty Disneyworld with holy water on tap - literally - there was a line of taps where you could fill up your tacky Virgin Mary holy water bottle!

Caprianna · 13/09/2017 04:58

Another vote for the white house, sisitine chappel and the mona lisa.
I also found Lake Garda beautiful enough but boring.

Venice is like a crowded smelly theme park in summer, but the rest of the year magical and my favourite city.

What takes my breath away? The Lincoln memorial at night in Washington and David in Academia in Florenze.

OutComeTheWolves · 13/09/2017 05:10

Grand Canyon. Although we saw it by car and I've been led to believe that it's better by helicopter.

Ginorchoc · 13/09/2017 05:11

I think I'm easily pleased Grin loved Grand Canyon, so still and grand, we viewed by helicopter and by boat and they showed different aspects. Also thought Hoover Damn and the history was interesting.

Also just back from Sorrento and the Almalfi Coast, versuvio, Pompeii etc and loved it. It's not known for its beaches though so surprised you thought it had any Hmm our hotel was in the sea with its own jetty so we swam in the sea.

I thought Stonehenge and the burial mounds were intriguing.

juliasalinger · 13/09/2017 05:29

My first thought on reading the thread title was the Mona Lisa and I can see I wasn't alone Grin.

Also for me too, sadly the Grand Canyon, but that's because we went by car and were very unlucky with the weather. I am quite certain it's usually amazing and hope to go back one day.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 13/09/2017 05:36

Avebury is loads better than Stonehenge, I quite liked the village built through it, very Victorian/potty hIppy new age.
Pyramids-all the reasons stated.
A waterfall in Cuba.we drove mikes over dirt roads, scrambled down muddy paths and saw...the middle bit of the falls through the trees..
Durham. Lovely cathedral, beautiful uni and quaint houses. But that's it. I find it quite dull ( and I'm local)

Caprianna · 13/09/2017 05:42

Someone mentioned the Culture Palace in Warsaw. I really liked it especially lit up at night. There is ao little colour in Warsaw perhaps I was just desperate for something not grey.

Caspiana · 13/09/2017 05:47

I agree with @Sgtmajormummy - that shitty clock in Prague is a joke.

Also I queued for ages in the rain to go inside the Reichstag. Needn't have bothered. It's just a modern office block inside.

DottyBlue2 · 13/09/2017 05:52

The Taj Mahal.

Wornoutbear · 13/09/2017 06:00

Cheddar Gorge - was expecting something grander - but in fairness I was only 12 at the time! Like a previous poster said I can remember visiting Stonehenge when you could walk up to and around the stones, and that was wonderful, but going back a few years ago it was dreadful. Filthy and full of rubbish. I've always wanted to go to Rome and Venice, but I think I'd be better keeping my illusions as they always seems so crowded!

DiscoDiva70 · 13/09/2017 06:02

Another one unimpressed with the Statue of Liberty. Its way smaller than I expected it to be.
