I went to stonehenge this year and whilst I was trying to get in touch with my inner druid, trying to project historical importance and mystery onto the place, I just couldn't escape the feeling that I was just looking at some very old stones and it was actually (whisper) a little bit boring!! Dh thought it was all marvellous though so I have never told him!!!

@tulipsinajug Ephesus was amazing! What wasn't, however, was pamukkale. The original bit was shut, and they were trying to engineer pools on the other side. Looked like a building site that had become water logged 😒

NewinTown25 · 14/09/2017 17:51

I wasn't impressed with Niagara Falls, am I odd?

2017SoFarSoGood · 14/09/2017 17:53

Yes to the White House. It was tiny and not very clean. Such a disappointment. Not as much as the Ponderosa (dating myself) though. That was miniscule.

The David. Ah. Still get teary-eyed.

lilywillywoo · 14/09/2017 17:54

Stonehenge, Little Mermaid and the Vatican. None lived up to expectations. On the other hand, wasn't expecting much of the Grand Canyon, but thought it was spectacular.

cheval · 14/09/2017 17:56

Climbing up inner scary sort of ladder dodgy structure inside pyramid in Cairo. Got to top, was an empty room. Guides were pissing themselves laughing knowing they'd conned us.

ElsieMc · 14/09/2017 17:59

Strange for people to be underwhelmed by York Minster. Visited it lots and go back at different times during the day, when the weather is stormy and the choir are singing it has an unexplainable atmosphere, very Inspector Morse. I was going to say you expect to find a dead body, but there are already plenty of them there.

I spoke to someone working in the vaults and he told me they had had to work late into the night to finish the job. The previous week there had been a thunderstorm late in the evening, they had on classical music and he said it was the creepiest experience of his whole life, the strangest atmosphere.

Claudia Lawrence's father is a volunteer there, I believe.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/09/2017 18:04

I used to work in York, and when we had American colleagues over, obviously we gave them a bit of a tour. Most were appropriately impressed by the Minster but there was on guy who walked around looking politely puzzled, and comment at the end 'lots of dead folks'Grin

TSSDNCOP · 14/09/2017 18:07

Manhatten

When did you go? I think they made some changes to access that revived the originals.

riceuten · 14/09/2017 18:32

Incidentally, I get really hacked off with people slagging Paris off for "being unfriendly" - what, every single person ? (this is usually monolingual English people looking for a McDonalds) and "can't see the attraction, meself". I speak minimal French and have always had a great time there, have visited 15-20 times and STILL haven't run out of things to do.

ZippyCameBack · 14/09/2017 18:33

I'm quite easily impressed, so I like nearly everything. When I went to Stonehenge, you could still walk right up to the stones and touch them (someone had sprayed "Save the ponies" all over some of them though). I liked it, but I also liked other less-visited henges that I've seen.
I wasn't keen on Versailles though. No particular reason, I just didn't feel anything.

pomers · 14/09/2017 18:36

Sissinghurst. Overrated. Harassed by elderly volunteers. Dead looking plants. Great Dixter much better

shoesarefab · 14/09/2017 18:38

@binkybix

About 15yrs ago. I'd always wanted to go as a girl at my school went and her pics were amazing (this was early 90's). But by the time I went they'd had to shut the original pools because of the damage done by people going in them. Everywhere else in Turkey I have loved though

BoredOnMatLeave · 14/09/2017 18:39

The pyramids! I was only 11 and a massive Egyptian history fan, I've never been so disappointed!

brasty · 14/09/2017 18:41

Love a lot of the places mentioned.I agree about Mona Lisa, but The Louvre itself is fabulous.
I was disappointed at Dublin. Takes a day to see all the sights.

Arealhumanbeing · 14/09/2017 18:43

La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

tygarugby · 14/09/2017 19:06

Mona Lisa was disappointing and Venice

ArDali1 · 14/09/2017 19:09

For me it's not necessarily landmarks that is underwhelming, it's more the "touristy" places people seem to visit. I liked Paris for the historical buildings. Shanghai was disappointing, well it was nice but not as amazing as I had thought it would be. But the outskirts of Shanghai was amazing, I love villages and places tourists wouldn't think of going to. I like more quiet parts of countries.

Never been to Dubai and don't think I ever plan to visit there, it's overrated, all that's there is just buildings and malls, that was built on a desert.
Same with New York, I'm sure it's nice but I still find it overrated.

I love Eastern Europe though, now that's where I find beautiful buildings, been to Slovakia, Bulgaria and Serbia so far, still many places I will like to visit one day in the future.

Been to many countries, but my heart loves England, I believe British history has one of the best in the world, and the buildings and countryside we have here are amazing. London is a beautiful city too, unfortunately it's just too busy for my liking. :P

Cockadoodledooo · 14/09/2017 19:17

As I read the title I thought to myself 'Stonehenge' op, so you're definitely not alone!

Jenniferturkington · 14/09/2017 19:31

Forget Stonehenge, I recommend a visit to foamhenge in America. Now that's special.

Ttbb · 14/09/2017 19:34

The Mona Lisa. The viewing gallery was so poorly done. There was a massive throng of Americans taking pictures of it-just why? They really should have constructed a narrowish corridor or a small room and had a time slot system.

JLo1979 · 14/09/2017 19:39

Giants Causeway in Antrim! Teeny tiny stones. I just thought, is that it???

Ropsleybunny · 14/09/2017 19:40

The ruined temples in Egypt.

MaggieSimpson44 · 14/09/2017 19:57

San Francisco generally underwhelmed me. Probably because we hadn't realised that you have to book for things well in advance. It was cold, windy and we always seemed to be going uphill! 😂
I did like the troll bus though.

juggler4 · 14/09/2017 19:58

I was hugely disappointed by the London Eye - very expensive, and then no explanation of what you can see. Really, how hard would it be to have an audio explanation of the buildings of London?
Was delighted by Prague - I went with no expectations and thought the buildings were so beautiful! Clock was total crap though.
Took the kids to Universal in November - place was empty, never waited more than 10 mins in line, did all the rides and enjoyed warm sunshine. Perfect time to go!
