I went to stonehenge this year and whilst I was trying to get in touch with my inner druid, trying to project historical importance and mystery onto the place, I just couldn't escape the feeling that I was just looking at some very old stones and it was actually (whisper) a little bit boring!! Dh thought it was all marvellous though so I have never told him!!!

I went to Stonehenge as part of a day trip to Bath and was prepared to be underwhelmed. Surprisingly I really enjoyed it. Probably because it was a cold, grey day in January and hardly anyone else was there. The weather actually added to the atmosphere. Bath however really wasn't as good as I was expecting,

Rome didn't underwhelm me but I just didn't enjoy it. On paper it should be somewhere I love but felt really hassled by people trying sell me stuff and I nearly got scammed into buying overpriced tickets for the Vatican.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2017 09:42

If you're going up Snowdon, you need a DH who carefully monitors the weather forecast so that you get to the top just as the mist starts to clear. And obviously, walk up because then you'll be wowed by being able to get a hot pasty and fresh tea at the top of a mountain.Grin

Sistine chapel, Taj Mahal, Empire State building, Eiffel tower, Notre Dame, were all disappointing.

Do you ever think they may have been disappointed by you?

expatinscotland · 13/09/2017 09:44

Cathedral de Notre Dame in Paris. I had lived in Strasbourg before ever going to Paris and found the Parisian cathedral small and underwhelming after getting used to the one in Strasbourg.

Didn't care for NYC or San Fran, either. Meh. Don't see why people pay so much to live in either.

The80sweregreat · 13/09/2017 09:45

Hamleys is a real let down, full of overpriced toys, hot and overcrowded!
Harrods is also a let down these days, maybe i am just too old for these type of shops!

Purdyandwheezy · 13/09/2017 09:46

Graceland is quite small too. I was expecting it to be bigger, although the inside was interesting.

ToEarlyForDecorations · 13/09/2017 09:49

This. Yes, I agree.

The plain of jars in Laos. A 10 hour bus journey to a field with some pots in

PetalMettle · 13/09/2017 09:52

Prague actually - much preferred Budapest

flissfloss65 · 13/09/2017 09:53

Sydney Opera House. Fantastic from afar but close up just loads of cheap looking white bathroom tiles.

scaryclown · 13/09/2017 09:53

Gracelands Mansion

It's a detached house with 70s decor, and a tiny kidney pool next to a four lane 'street' the buses from the visitor centre basically just cross the road, and the best 'attraction' is just a 50s diner serving milkshakes. I did like the private jet, but I wish theyd take the bloody plastic off the seats..

Brittbugs80 · 13/09/2017 09:57

RSC Theatre looks like a lookout tower at a POW camp

I shouldn't laugh but it really does! Grin

chipmonkey · 13/09/2017 09:58

Sorrento. We visited Positano which is a smaller town a short drive away and it was what I was expecting Sorrento to be like.

Having said that, it was a fantastic holiday otherwise as we got to see Pompeii and Vesuvio.

I am Irish and I don't know if I'd recommend Dublin. There are much nicer places to visit in Ireland.

Brittbugs80 · 13/09/2017 09:59

Graceland is quite small too

It is but I suppose when Elvis bought it, it was considered quite big at the time plus to him, it was huge compared to the house he grew up in.

I still cry like a baby each time I visit though!

MumBod · 13/09/2017 10:00

The Louvre in general makes me feel ill. It's got Sick Building Syndrome.

FAO Schwarz was disappointing - especially the big piano Tom Hanks jumped on in Big. Tiny and shit.

Travelled up Victoria Peak in Hong Kong, only to gain an unusual view of a cloud.

expatinscotland · 13/09/2017 10:00

Dublin was great! I was seriously drunk, though Grin.

BlackStars · 13/09/2017 10:01

Grand canyon
Epcot (now this really was not just disappointing but dire)

Claireshh · 13/09/2017 10:01

Yosemite. We did a massive hike to see giant redwoods. I realised that I really don't like forests. El Capitan didn't blow me away either.

I didn't like LA. New York reminded me of Tottenham Court Road in London. I think Philadelphia is a beautiful city.

babyhamish · 13/09/2017 10:03

Worse- another vote for the Mona Lisa
Best- Whitby Abbey! Amazing.

paradoxicalInterruption · 13/09/2017 10:04

How could anyone not be stunned by Yosemite - unless it was low cloud and you couldn't actually see anything!

Curtainsider · 13/09/2017 10:06

Oh yes to the RSC building. It's a blot on the landscape if I remember my school day trip to Stratford correctly.

Cities I felt underwhelmed by include San Fransisco and Vancouver.

The Edinburgh fringe festival depresses me although my first year at it I did enjoy the anticipation of entertainment! When it failed to materialise I felt buyer's regret that's never been overcome.

Curtainsider · 13/09/2017 10:08

I wouldn't go back to Dublin either. Although I liked other parts of Ireland.

takemetomars · 13/09/2017 10:09

Grand Canyon - big brown hole (seen from a plane tho so maybe not the best way to see it?)
Most of Paris - hate the place
Burj Khalifa
Taj Mahal - so disappointing
loved Edinburgh Castle but I Come from generations of soldiers so maybe that is why

bridgetreilly · 13/09/2017 10:14

Well, I think you're all bonkers! Do you not do any research on places before you go that you have such wildly overblown expectations? Like the poster who was disappointed the pyramids are stepped not smooth. That is not exactly a secret. And I'm not sure why people are so caught up on size - bigger isn't always better.
