To ask how much you pay for electricity every month?

I feel like our bill just goes up and up.

We are paying £110 a month for a small three bed semi with EDF. Does this sound like a lot?

We use the tumble dryer a lot, although trying to cut down, and use a small heater in our lounge and bedroom during the winter evenings because we have night storage heating and it's rubbish (we don't even bother switching it on anymore).

I recall paying £70 a couple of years ago. It feels like since DD has come along, we are spending a lot more.

£110 pm isn't huge though, it's probably about average. We pay £90 pm combined G+E for an extended 2 bed with gas combi boiler central heating set to 22C, good insulation, crap windows, electric shower, oven, hob and dishwasher with 2 adults who are out at work most days.

You also need to check your tariff annually and switch if necessary.

Hi I work for one of the "big six" energy companies. If you've got night storage heaters you've probably got a cheaper rate overnight when they charge up. This will be the cheapest way to heat your home if it's all electric as the night rate can sometimes be half of what the day rate is. Day rate is normally slightly more than a single rate meter. Plug in heaters are ridiculously expensive to run and so are tumble dryers.

I wouldn't recommend using your dryer overnight but other appliances - washing machines, dishwashers etc - can be put on a timer to run on the cheaper night rate.

How do you heat your hot water? A lot of people still think they should keep it on all the time but that's like your electric kettle switching itself off and you switching it straight back on again. With an immersion heater only switch it on when you need it.

And btw I spend £110 per month dual fuel in a 3 bed semi with just me and DD who is 18. We leave everything on all the time...

orenisthenewblack · 13/09/2017 13:28

Three storey house with double glazing and two inconsiderate teens. Our not so DD left her electric heater on all night Sunday and we only knew because we've just had a smart meter and a monitor thingy. Washing machine is on often and I line dry as much as I can. Gas cooker also.
I did check our tariff last month and thought I had changed it, but apparently not as they took the same amount again this month.
Will definitely check again this afternoon. I know it's a huge amount. Heating hasn't been on for months but we have the boiler on to heat the water.

Imchuckbass · 13/09/2017 13:50

£151 for the last quarter.
I'm a SAHM and there is always a TV on. Plus consoles/laptop on every evening. iPads/phones always charging. Dishwasher every day and washing machine most days. No tumble drier though!

sleepseeker99 · 13/09/2017 13:56

3 bed semi- £40 per month. We use tumble dryer everyday but only have one TV, turn everything off when not in use and both work full time so not at home most of the day.

CPtart · 13/09/2017 14:01

£37.66 per month for a four bed semi (with Iresa). Two adults and two teens. Never use the dishwasher and rarely use the tumble dryer. Electric hob. Oil fired boiler (no gas).

Fatbird71 · 13/09/2017 14:06

£75 electricity for large old 4 bed. One SAHM parent. £49 gas but have just been refunded for overpayments as we haven't had to refill the tank. (we have LPG)
We can't get dual fuel discounts unfortunately. It's a large 4 bed though. I thought it was extortionate but having seen some of the other charges on here, I'm feeling a bit better.

SparkleSoiree · 13/09/2017 14:11

We're with Octopus and we pay £75 6 months of the year for dual fuel and £100 for the autumn/winter 6 months to accommodate a higher usage. That's green energy from sustainable sources too. 3-bed semi.

I check my deal against current deals every anniversary and will move when necessary. Some of them vary wildly in price and it's crazy to be paying so much more if you don't need to be.

Hotheadwheresthecoldbath · 13/09/2017 14:33

Check on comparison sites,if you've been with the same supplier for a year it will say somewhere on your yearly bill how much gas and electricity you used.Put these into the comparison site and it then tells you roughly how much a month on their tariff.

I am paying £61 per month, less in summer for 3 bed semi(gas and electricity)we have a Connie boiler and the heating is on a lot during the day as I work shifts.
Have just moved to OVI fixed 2 year tariff,on last year's usage this will be £66per month.

Danibubbles · 13/09/2017 15:42

We were paying £160 (fixed) with EON gas + electric for a 4 bed detached house, heating on Sept-March(ish) and tumble dryer all year round. We were massively overpaying though because at one point we managed to accumulate almost £500 credit in just 6 months!

Switched to EDF price promise and now paying £81 per month. Considerably cheaper but still in £30 credit already after 2 months Grin

Agree with PP, check comparison sites for the best deals.

britbat23 · 13/09/2017 15:57

Pay about £60pm for two adults and a baby with an old-fashioned boiler.

The mind boggles at how much some of you are paying for gas and electricity.

Either you are on standard tariffs, or you have the heating on all year round (WTF?!) or both.

Switch tariffs and switch off!

FooFighter99 · 13/09/2017 16:23

£61 per month with NPower

3 bed mid terrace with loft conversion (3rd bedroom in loft - always freezing in winter and sweltering in summer Hmm).

Tumble dryer on nearly every Saturday/Sunday (I rarely peg out) - electric oven - teenager who can't remember to turn stuff off....

We always end up in credit over summer and in debit over winter (but never by more than 1 months payment), so it balances itself out.

I think you need to do a price comparison and find a better tariff.

specialsubject · 13/09/2017 16:37

Op will always pay loads if not on a dual rate and not using the storage heaters correctly.

Small 3 bed semi built in 1903 so draughty and hard to keep warm, has central heating and hob, everything else electric. No tumble drier. Pay £107 a month

habenero20 · 20/09/2017 14:14

about 1000/year. small 3 bed house. that's both gas and electricity.

I think if you are using electricity for any kind of heating that will raise the bills substantially. If I recall correctly, gas is about 1/3 - 1/4 the price of electricity, and heating is probably the most energy intensive thing your house does.

HolidayTimeAgain · 20/09/2017 14:16

£85 per month for gas / electricity. Family of 4, one stay at home parent. Tumble dryer used regularly, gas hob and electric oven (I cook a lot).
1930s semi detached bungalow with dorma in atic, gas combi boiler and well insulated, heating always off overnight.

RonSwansonsMoustache · 20/09/2017 14:19

£60 a month combined. We live in a two bed semi but have a wood fire in the winter instead of using central heating all the tjme.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 20/09/2017 15:22

I pay £85 per month for dual fuel with EDF and got a refund of just under £100 last month.

Four bedroom house, gas heating, gas hob, electric ovens. I don't use a tumble dryer though.

crisscrosscranky · 20/09/2017 16:59

£84 per month on dual tariff with NPower- 3 bed detached chalet. Washing machine and tumble dryer used daily. I'm often out of the house all day.

£5 a week! Tell me your secret Grin

I use about £60 a month electric on a prepay meter (but £4 a week is debt repayment).

Gas (also prepay meter) - in summer about £2 a week! In winter about £13 a week as have gas central heating and use the hob more.

Two bedroom mid terrace with insulation, newish double glazing and me going around switching everything off that isn't in use constantly. We do have quite large rooms and high ceilings though which doesn't help with heating costs.

Disn3yN3rd · 20/09/2017 17:12

£98 p/m with EDF for both gas and electricity in a 2 bed house.

delilahbucket · 20/09/2017 17:15

£68 a month for gas and electric. Five bed end townhouse and I'm at home all day. I know that isn't average though and when we moved in EDF set the payments initially at £125.

FlandersRocks · 20/09/2017 17:18

That seems a lot to me. We're about £60 pm, family of 5. Plus I'm on maternity so I'm home a lot more and using more electric. And it's a pre-payment meter.
