People that type in their accents

It's so fucking attention seeking and pointless! Why do it? Nobody cares where you're from!

Example, woman from Glasgow on my Facebook:

"Cannae wait tae get home t'night an see ma wee boy! D'nt give a fuck wot his da saes he can get tae fuck!"

I come from Yorkshire but I don't feel the need to type everything in a Yorkshire accent!

I've noticed the worst culprits are Scots and people from the north east. Why do they do it?

OP posts:
TheFallenMadonna · 11/09/2017 23:51

I suddenly feel all nostalgic for Scottishmummy... Sad

ILoveMillhousesDad · 11/09/2017 23:51

Grin I started a thread a while ago about professional northerners.

Definitely falls into the same category.

RozDoyle · 11/09/2017 23:51

I fucking hate this.

I'm from Glasgow and it makes me cringe myself inside out.

badbadhusky · 11/09/2017 23:52

That Plague Dogs book by the Watership Down guy has fox whose inner monologue is in Yorkshire dialect and it's uphill work for your average southerner. You may well be onto something.

wildbhoysmama · 11/09/2017 23:54

Ditto Rozdoyle as a Glaswegian, and very proud of it, if makes me want to stab myself in the eye...with a pencil.

Pangur2 · 11/09/2017 23:54

You'd love r/scottishpeopletwitter, haha! Oh my God it's my favourite subreddit ever.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/09/2017 23:55

So people shouldn't type in their language?

Do you feel the same way about Welsh speakers?

Lurkedforever1 · 11/09/2017 23:55

I get your point. However Irvine Welsh seems to have done ok with it

ConciseandNice · 11/09/2017 23:56

It's a dialect, not just an accent.

HelloPossums · 11/09/2017 23:59

I really like it Blush

TwatteryFlowers · 12/09/2017 00:00

I'm from Yorkshire too op and I see it all the time, mainly on a certain couple of groups
on facebook. It annoys me too but I never comment on it.

GirlOnATrainToShite · 12/09/2017 00:03

My OH family are from the north east and they do this but with them it's more being terrible spellers 😳

hiphopcat · 12/09/2017 00:04

Doesn't bother me, I think it's quite cute.

HelloPossums · 12/09/2017 00:05

*You'd love r/scottishpeopletwitter, haha! Oh my God it's my favourite subreddit

Just reading it now Pangur 😂😂

crazycatgal · 12/09/2017 00:06

I agree OP, it's cringey.

littlecabbages · 12/09/2017 00:20

Don't think you can compare this to typing in Welsh for heaven's sake
Welsh is an actual language!^
eyes rolling tae the back a ma heed^

MrsOverTheRoad · 12/09/2017 00:22

It's so Irvine Welsh isn't it?

Ya ken ya wee shite? Grin

MrLovebucket · 12/09/2017 00:23

It's dialect. You can't really type 'in an accent'

Does not bother me a jot.

I still use Welsh words sometimes as it's perfectly natural (e.g. cwtch instead of cuddle). Lots of Scottish folk use/type the word bairn and nobody loses their shit.

MagnumAddict · 12/09/2017 00:24

Gies peace!

Seriously though maybe they just want to better represent how they actually speak and communicate. It's a strange take for me to think it's in any way showing off.

To the Glaswegians on the thread saying it makes them cringe... It makes me cringe that you would display such obvious snobbery.

Fwiw I'm Glaswegian too and I don't write in an accent. Maybe the odd word or phrase in a text to a fellow Glaswegian but I can't understand why anyone would get worked up about it.

Also OP, you do realise there are people from Scotland and the North of England on mumsnet. Your post would have had a much friendlier tone if you asked why do you do it rather than why do they do it. Just saying!

Off to feed my newborn. I'll come back in the morning go see how much I get ripped to shreds Grin

Ginkypig · 12/09/2017 00:25

Your example is not writing in an accent!

It is writing in a different language.

Most Scots or Welsh or other language speakers write in English because in general that is the language most used but when the opportunity arises it is lovely to be able to use your native language.

So for work, English

At home or on your personal social media page or txts to friends, your native language.

SuperBeagle · 12/09/2017 00:28

I'm also on Scottish People Twitter now. Grin

I think it's hilarious, but it takes me a million years to figure out what they're saying useless Australian here

HurtyTeeth · 12/09/2017 00:31

What's wrong with it?
I like to read my Aunties FB posts. You absolutely know when something has pissed her off because her messages start off as queenies English, but as it progresses, Patois makes its appearance and completely takes over by the end of her rant! Kind of makes me feel like she's stood there next to me.
YABU.

Willow2017 · 12/09/2017 00:40

You are annoyed that someone speaks to their friends on social media in the language they use everyday?

Ok, maybe just block them if it offends you so much.

I usually stick to 'English' on forums but occaisionally the odd word creeps in and I dont care a jot what anyone else thinks of it. I am not from England and I dont need to be ashamed of the language I have used all my life in the area I live in and if 'southerners' have trouble understanding the odd word thats too bad.

I love hearing/reading local languages and colloquialisms, makes life more interesting.

JaneJeffer · 12/09/2017 00:42

I blame Ma Broon Grin

zen1 · 12/09/2017 00:43

I am from the South and I really like reading people typing in accents, particularly Scottish and particularly "bawbag". I love the way different dialects sound. Maybe cos mine is so boring!
