To be depressed about the lack of wine

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 11/09/2017 20:06

I'm disabled and suffer from chronic pain and fatigue. I hardly ever drink, but really fancied a glass of wine tonight so dp pick up a bottle for me before he went out for the evening. I've just tried to open it, and can't. Aibu to feel completely pathetic, and wibu to call dp and tell him he needs to come home and open it for me?

How far away is he? If he wouldn't mind I'd ask, I know my dh would if he was local.

I can never use a corkscrew, Dh has to open it before he goes out.

Next time get cava/champagne so much easier!

SpottedGingham · 11/09/2017 20:08

Aw that's awful! So near yet so far. Shock

MoonShapedPool · 11/09/2017 20:11

Nooooo! Poor you Sad Get him back to help Wine

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 11/09/2017 20:13

The bottle now has a corkscrew sticking out the top. I can't really drink a lot, so only wanted a tiny glass.
Tbf he'd probably come back an help, but he hardly ever goes out (he has to do a lot for me as I really struggle to do things for myself) so I don't want to ruin his night.

There HAS to be a short cut to open it.... is it a screw top or cork?

Whisper23 · 11/09/2017 20:14

Do you have a neighbour that could help?

MoonShapedPool · 11/09/2017 20:17

I would gladly come round and help if you were my friend/neighbour

Pagwatch · 11/09/2017 20:17

The thing is don't try to do it in one go.
Just use the lever bit to nudge the cork up a bit then turn the screw a little further in then lever a bit again.

It's the long pull that requires the effort. Try and minimise that.

Does that make sense ?

silkybear · 11/09/2017 20:17

Can you push the cork down into the bottle with a spoon? I've done that before. Found a link that has a few ideas for you. You can't not have wine when you have wine so nearby food-hacks.wonderhowto.com/how-to/10-absolutely-ingenious-ways-open-wine-without-corkscrew-0163021/

DorisDangleberry · 11/09/2017 20:20

Dial 999. This is a genuine emergency

silkybear · 11/09/2017 20:20

You can do it! Wine

silkybear · 11/09/2017 20:22

In fact the heat it up method might be the best one on that list because you would just need to fill a pan and turn the gas on...

chitofftheshovel · 11/09/2017 20:24

Oh man, that is a certain kind of torture!

I probably wouldn't call him back to be honest, but then I don't know how nearby he is.

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 11/09/2017 20:35

Don't really get on with my neighbors, and would be really embarrassed to ask.

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 11/09/2017 20:37

silkybear you are a genius. I got it out!!!
Thanks everyone for the ideas, I feel like an alkie, I've never been that desperate to get a bottle of wine open.

chitofftheshovel · 11/09/2017 20:40

Any luck? Some of the tips silky linked to are just weird!

oldlaundbooth · 11/09/2017 20:41

Wine should I say

chitofftheshovel · 11/09/2017 20:41

Ah brilliant. Which method did you use?

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 11/09/2017 20:46

I heated it up a bit, then it pulled out quite easily, managed to only heat the top bit up so the wine didn't get too hot.
This may be the best glass of wine I've ever had Smile

Screw tops are your friend! How frustrating! Hope you pop that cork soon. In answer to your question no, YANBU!

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 11/09/2017 20:53

When dp gets home I'm going to make it very clear that he either buys screw tops, opens it for me, or I ltb
