Travelling alone.

Preferably one week but can do two.

Throw ideas at me :)

Be mindful a lot of these destinations will need vaccinations

MerlinsScarf · 11/09/2017 18:37

I'm rather geeky but so this may not suit you, but when I'm visiting anywhere alone I get an aimless feeling sometimes, so now I set myself a project or two. So, seeing as much of the city's art as I can, finding the best cafe for whatever local cake, picking a little local gift for family and friends.

mareemallory · 11/09/2017 18:37

I went to Florence on my own a few years ago and it was lovely. I went in the winter which was perfect for avoiding queues, and as the weather was a bit cooler I spent ages walking around sightseeing without overheating. There's enough to do and see that you can make yourself really busy if you want.

averythinline · 11/09/2017 18:42

a friend has used this company for 2 trips now and highly recommends..
you can talk to others if you want or not if you don't! often people stay in different accommodation so you're not all next to each other

www.golearnto.com/

other friend alternates group holidays that she cant be bothered organising (just did a trip across Vietnam) with ones she starts herself...

Safari is definetly duable on your own - would recommend Sth Africa
Fly to Johannesburg then get a trip to Kruger used to be the most cost effective
something like this sort of organisation...
www.krugerparktour.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2aKliNad1gIVipTtCh0ivQozEAAYASAAEgKMW_D_BwE

It was a complete mix of couples/people on their own/families but it was really all about the game drives...

I then got a low cost flight (was too late to book the train -but i wish i had) to Capetown and had some time there....looking at the penguins and drinking some great cocktails! missed the whale watching as wrong time of year...
would do it all again in a heartbeat....although make sure I was at whale watching time this time- .

I love travelling alone. Sadly its usually only for a few days at a time so long haul isn't an option.

You don't sound very excited about going so why not arrange a shorter break to see if you enjoy it rather than booking something for the whole fortnight? Maybe a 2 centre type thing ie a few days in Rome then on to Florence or even a city and spa? Tuscany for some r & r or as mentioned above, a cooking holiday?

mogulfield · 11/09/2017 18:48

Great Rail journey round India, best holiday Ive ever done!

HemanOrSheRa · 11/09/2017 19:20

A friend of mine has had two amazing holidays (as a solo traveller) with this company -

karalime · 11/09/2017 19:27

I'm planning a trip to Japan next year, I'm looking at a gadventures or itrepid tour.

I did Thailand last year and I just got back from 2 weeks in Central America (did another tour with a friend).

Hoping to fit in a sailing tour of Croatia next year (about £400) but I find that most European tours are more expensive than going further afield, so I might as well fork out the extra few hundred quid for flights.

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 11/09/2017 19:32

I'm just coming to the end of travelling round Europe in a camper with my dog - nearly five months, six countries.

I'd like to revisit Italy but fly/drive to miss out the rubbish bits! Lucca was my favourite so I think I'd do that then Rome/Florence/Siena.

HemanOrSheRa · 11/09/2017 19:36

Well, I'm not jealous of you at all Mid. Nope Envy Grin.

I went to Siena last year at it was GORGEOUS.

Labyrinthian · 11/09/2017 20:01

If you want to safari I can highly highly recommend Acacia Africa. I've backpacked lots of Eastern and southern Africa but what I think really stands out is the 2 weeks in an overland truck with them from Nairobi - through Tanzania, and out to Zanzibar. All solo travellers, tents at night, cheap way to see the most amazing stuff - and it's a really good time of year for safari. Went to Masai Mara, Serengeti, Ngoror Ngoror Crater, just bloody amazing, ending up on beaches in Zanzibar. PM me if you want any other ideas, I've been lucky enough to go to over 50 countries and this is my number 1 recommendation for a solo travellers who likes animals

rubybleu · 11/09/2017 20:20

When I was 33 & on gardening leave, I went on a 10 day tour of Turkey with Traveltalk. It was brilliant fun, I was definitely not the oldest by a long shot, and I paid the supplement for a single room so I didn't have to share Grin I had a fiancé waiting at home but there were lots of solo female travellers on the trip. I'm quite introverted and it was great. You'd have to like Australians though. Most group tours, whatever the operator, are full of Australians.

It was also fairly inexpensive. They specialise in trips to North Africa and Turkey - worth checking out.

tentative3 · 11/09/2017 20:45

Does it have to be abroad? I'd do a week's upholstery course at Huntlands Farm in Herefordshire, staying at the B&B. It's lovely.

HemanOrSheRa · 11/09/2017 21:06

Oh yes tentative. You could do a cookery course here and have a fabulous time. I've done it on my own (well not quite, DS was there. He was 8.) Lovely break Smile.

AnythingConsidered · 11/09/2017 21:19

I would look arvthe Explore Holidays tours.

They run the for single travellers so you get to travel in a group, on an organised tour but with the option of company when you want It!

Some AMAZING destinations too.

I now to the Family tours instead!

Doramaybe · 11/09/2017 21:25

I recently did the following two trips on my own. I loved every minute!

  1. Flew to Bilbao, saw the Guggenheim, bus to San Sebastian, based myself there, that was fab, bus to Bayonne, and back to Biarritz for flight back. The Basque Country is amazing. 6 days.
  1. Flight to Treviso, bus to Padua (Padova), gorgeous place, based myself there. Train to Venice in 20 minutes. Train to Bologna one hour, oh the food! 6 days again.

I enjoy these little trips on my own, and do a lot of research regarding public transport and connections etc. so I am well armed on arrival!

Hope you find something that suits you.

NightGard3n · 12/09/2017 02:19

Buy an Europe train pass and visit lots of places. Or Megabus round Europe. How about a walking holiday. I would pick something that you want to see or do and plan around that. What about drive round Ireland, Wales or Scotland including outer Hebrides islands lots of history and opportunities for photos. (not all at once) or pick some Nation Trust or similar places to visit. You could go island hopping in Thailand... Iceland is magical... too many choices

NightGard3n · 12/09/2017 02:30

Ski holiday book lessons, sauna, hot tub, good food in eve

liquidrevolution · 12/09/2017 06:35

When i was single and wanted to get away i headed to florence and venice. But i am an architectire buff. Iceland sonds fun as well.

sentenceinterrupted · 12/09/2017 06:40

I had this earlier this year and I walked the camino to Santiago de compostela. Loved it !! (No preparation except buying two quick dry tshirts and a pair of walking socks)

Witchitywoo · 12/09/2017 06:41

I would go on a yoga/meditation retreat to Nepal. Long flight but the country/people are amazing.

teatoast · 12/09/2017 06:45

Morocco. A few days trekking (mount toubkal is an amazing trek) and then a few days exploring Marrakesh and the souks. Could fit in a yoga/meditation retreat too if that's something that appeals to you.

HidingFromDD · 12/09/2017 07:02

Greece, meditation and general chill out week here www.serenityretreat.co.uk/greece-accommodation-and-prices.html

Still some places left for 24th and 1st. All apartments straight on to the beach, meditation and other stuff going on if you want to, but no obligation to join in with anything.

Kelvingrove · 12/09/2017 07:06

You sound a bit daunted by the idea of travelling alone so why not try short trips in the UK. That way you can gain confidence one or two nights at a time. London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Cardiff or places like Stonehenge, The Giants Causeway, Kew Gardens are all worth a visit. Or the islands like Isle of Man, Isle of Wight etc.

A few of the suggestions I have seen on this thread sound like great trips but not for a woman travelling along for the first time. Train trip across India for example is a challenging trip and not suitable for your needs just now.

Hope you enjoy your trip.
