Would you allow your 15 year old to watch Saw???

It's on Netflix and she'd like to. Of course she could easily watch it if she wanted (I'm not that stupid... I was 15 once!) but it's wether I actively allow it. We normally watch stuff from there together, hence she asked.

Would you??

I don't think I'd allow one of my own kids, cos I'm quite strict about age ratings.

It ain't all that tho. I thought it was quite silly. I doubt she'll be traumatised for life.

Crack on!

LadyLoveYourWhat · 09/09/2017 01:29

Nope.

Cavender · 09/09/2017 01:30

It's beyond me why anyone would want to watch Saw.

emptydre · 09/09/2017 01:31

She's quite into horror films and has now caught up on all the 15 films she has been desperate to watch.

Hmm, it's a tough one.

Meepmoop · 09/09/2017 01:32

It's very graphic in its violence so it depends on how your Dd would be with it. I was probably around that age when I watched it but gore didn't bother me.

SaucyJack · 09/09/2017 01:36

The new version of It is a 15. Could take her to that?

emptydre · 09/09/2017 01:40

Oh is it? I thought it said 18 but that was on wiki so could be wrong

AutumnalLeaves38 · 09/09/2017 01:43

I'm in my 40s, and I wish someone had prevented me from watching it, frankly!

SerfTerf · 09/09/2017 01:43

I wouldn't.

nameusername · 09/09/2017 01:44

I've got no problem with that as long as it's not sexually explicit, full of extreme nudity and foul language. Growing up, with one TV in the house I tend to watch what the elder siblings have on telly including wresting, MMA as a child. I'm also taught that they're reality, fantasy, adaptation, real life etc.

My teacher did banned me from reading Flowers in the Attic when I was 13.

SerfTerf · 09/09/2017 01:54

I just googled for a summary (to check I was thinking of the right film, I haven't seen it, but I've read about it) and the image that flashed up is more than I wanted to see. Really horrific.

ShoesHaveSouls · 09/09/2017 02:02

No, I really wouldn't. And I'm quite lax about these things - mine watch the Walking Dead.

Saw is... beyond the pale.

AgentZigzag · 09/09/2017 02:08

I love films, love horror films, I've let my DD (who's 16 now) see films before the ratings guide age, but only when I know what's in them and definitely not saw

I know it's trying to force you into thinking about what people would do just to survive, and you probably would do them, but why introduce a 15 year old to those things when she hasn't got enough experience/capacity to know to turn the film off and that it's better not to know?

Plenty of time for her to find out how shite other people can be bit by bit.

It's gratuitous torture, surely you don't want that in your lovely 15 YOs head? She's only desperate to watch it because she doesn't know what's in it.

Remy66 · 09/09/2017 03:03

Honestly, no I wouldn't.
I'm quite lax with age rating on games and films and will always watch them first to gauge it accurately. For example, the woman in black is a 12 or a 12A but I would never allow a child under about 14-15 to watch it.
Watch it yourself first - alone. Then see what you think.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 09/09/2017 06:10

I don't remember the first one being that bad gore wise, it had more of a psychological thriller vibe going on rather than out and out gore. But if you allow her to watch the first, its a slippery slope to her then wanting to watch the rest, and they do get more graphic. I'm a horror and gore lover, and i do wince a little bit at certain scenes in them.

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 09/09/2017 06:15

I really wouldn't. I used to love horror films in my twenties and went to cinema to see it. I'm still haunted by some of the ideas and images behind it. Psychologically it's horrific as a film.

Veterinari · 09/09/2017 06:18

I've got no problem with that as long as it's not sexually explicit, full of extreme nudity and foul language.

Gosh I find it strange that you'd restrict nudity and swearing but not extreme violence and torture!

Veterinari · 09/09/2017 06:19

And I agree with twolittleboys it's psychologically horrific.

I find some films haunt me - there are things that you can't unsee

demirose87 · 09/09/2017 06:32

No I think they are horrible films. Went on a work night out to see it once and I couldn't look at the screen and found it so disturbing and upsetting. I find 18 rated films too gory and graphic and can't watch them.

noblegiraffe · 09/09/2017 06:40

I wouldn't want my children to watch any of the 'torture porn' type of horror films, I think they're vile.

I'm sure if you asked on here for recommendations, people could come up with better horrors that would be ok for a 15 year old. What about older 15 rated films, classic horrors?

KimmySchmidt1 · 09/09/2017 06:58

I'd be pretty relaxed about horror in general, I watched plenty as a teen and still do - love a good ghostie story at Christmas etc. But that one is particularly sick, to the extent I've never watched it and I'm 37! If you watch it together you can both decide it's grim in the first 10 mins and watch a good horror instead. Insidious is good and well acted and scary without being the most depraved shit humanity ever thought up!

ZanyMobster · 09/09/2017 07:13

Have you seen it before OP? I won't watch it bit DB says it's the worst horror film he's seen, he's really into horrors bit days it's terrifying.

ZanyMobster · 09/09/2017 07:15

Name - I don't get why you wouldn't be ok with nudity and swearing at 15 but ok with Saw. Most def other way round for me.

blueskyinmarch · 09/09/2017 07:23

When my DD1 was age 15 she and her friends watched many 18 rated horror films. This was because the lad the the DVD rental shop ( remember those?) had a bit of a crush on DD and let her take out whatever she wanted. I had absolutely no idea that they were 18s and would not have let her watch them if I had known. However she did watch them and did not seem to be scarred in any way from doing so. Don't know if she saw Saw though as i don't know how old it is.
