I just tried to buy a bottle of soft drink, you know, water, sugar, flavouring, colour.. And it was nearly impossible to buy any of them without there being loads of aspartame, something k, saccharin, etc..!
In the end I chose 7-up..but even R Whites normal is the same, tango fizzy, vimto, irn Bru, coke... I had no choice at all!

I am ve-ry suspicious...

Anyone know?

Misunderundering the situation as alway "fascicle"
What dont you understand about "everything in moderation"

fascicle · 09/09/2017 14:24

bruffin: Ad hominems are a weak, unnecessary response.

Perhaps you'd like to add some context to your everything in moderation comment, given that from a societal point of view, moderation is problematic and many people will be oblivious to the e.g. 6 or more teaspoons of sugar in a fizzy drink. There should be more/better alternatives to artificially sweetened drinks - overly sugared drinks is not ideal.

bruffin · 09/09/2017 14:26

It might not be ideal, but a nice refreshing one on a hot day, its not a problem unless your orthorexic.

bruffin · 09/09/2017 14:27

The point you miss is there is a lack of aternative to AS these days, which is a problem

bruffin · 09/09/2017 14:42

Or youve been to the gym or had a swim for an hour and burned off 600 calories, a can of san pelligrino is fine.

Overconsumption of sugared fizzy drinks might not be an issue for you but clearly, it is a problem at a societal level.

Eh? What about the bit where I said:

Incitatis · 09/09/2017 15:00

One unforeseen consequence of all this artificial sweetener in drinks is that they can cause diarrhoea in certain people. I nurse elderly people and we have experienced problems with them drinking this stuff and ending up with loose stools. Elderly people cannot afford to lose body fluids in this way as it can easily lead to dehydration and all the associated problems that it brings with it - uti, sore skin, depleted gut flora, electrolyte imbalance etc.

Nice that the govt are inflicting this rubbish upon vulnerable individuals Hmm I wonder how many other people are suffering in a similar way - babies, children, ibs sufferers, people with learning disabilities who are unable to express their needs.

Samsara123 · 09/09/2017 15:37

Incitatis I noticed they had the cordial type drinks in my mums care home in the Summer, trying to keep their liquids up. I think they were more for drinking the tea, but still. Did you still have to give them the cordial even though it was causing the problems?

bruffin · 09/09/2017 15:48

Just bought this in H&B no calories but no AS or sugar, we need more drinks like this.

Bruffin - oh my god, that's looks amazing!! No calorie fizzy drink, my wish has come true!!! Grin

Bet it's pricey. That'll be the downside I guess. 😩

uglydrinks.com Website looks good though

Allwashedup · 09/09/2017 17:06

Fructose is also horrible stuff and added to many foods to make them addictive...

AllToadsLeadToHome · 09/09/2017 17:25

Someone mentioned Sprite upthread, Sprite regular ingredients are (taken from the Tesco website):

Carbonated Water, Sugar, Citric Acid, Malic Acid, Acidity Regulator (Sodium Gluconate), Natural Lemon-Lime Flavourings, Sweetener (Steviol Glycosides)

Incitatis · 09/09/2017 17:41

Samsara I managed to persuade the family of one client to stop buying her sugar free lemonade and her bowels improved almost immediately.

I have been unable to persuade the management from buying the Robinsons squashes because the alternatives are too expensive.

I think it's an utter disgrace and perhaps even a health issue that there isn't an affordable alternative. I pay around £2.50 per bottle of the sweetener free cordial in my house. The ordinary squashes are as cheap as chips.

gluteustothemaximus · 09/09/2017 17:57

The ordinary squashes are as cheap as chips.

Yes, that's true, and these horrible cheap squashes are in every school/nursery/brownies/cubs etc and my kids are the odd ones asking for water instead.

I've asked, and even brought along the sugar version, to be met with..'but the sugar free is healthier' Hmm

bruffin · 09/09/2017 18:20

fructose isnt addictive

nonfatnofoamlatte · 09/09/2017 18:31

As much as I like sugar, I know it's bad (bad, bad, bad!!) Sugar isn't a natural food - it's a processed food additive and because it's addictive, food manufacturers put it in their processed foods thereby making us crave their foods and keep buying it. It is linked to a lot of different diseases including diabetes.
To fight obesity and diabetes, we need to go back to the past and eat fresh fruits and vegetables. We have to give up the over processed but convenient foods and start making our own by scratch. Hard work? Yep! I don't know how we can do it when life is so much faster than before. We all work and there seems to be no time to do what we need to do to be healthy.

Samsara123 · 09/09/2017 18:37

Incitatis Just shows you then doesn't it. I've just had a look at Ribena, do you think that would be too expensive as well. Total madness though, it's making people ill, more work and mess for you all too. The whole range of Robinson's is all sweeteners by the looks of it.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 09/09/2017 18:50

I don't allow artificial sweeteners in the house. They make me very ill! Doctors have confirmed that I must avoid artificial sweeteners AND stevia. In the cafe close to my work last week I checked the ingredients of all the non fizzy drinks available (except tea/coffee) and they ALL contained an artificial sweetener, I usually drink water at work but fancied a change but had to stick with water. Only coke didn't have artificial sweetener in it but I'm not keen on coke.

bruffin · 09/09/2017 18:53

nofat
sugar is not addictive, it is a myth, nor does it cause diabetes anymore than eating too much other food.

Incitatis · 09/09/2017 19:06

Ribena is full of the sweeteners as well. I have terrible trouble finding drinks for us at home and it's getting harder. I hate drinking plain water and I can't drink fresh juices as they irritate my bladder.

Dh likes tonic water, but all we could find in Tesco the other week that was sweetener free was Fevertree tonic which is £££ Sad

Incitatis · 09/09/2017 19:09

These are okay, but cost around £2.50 a bottle. For a family of four it works our dear each week.

Samsara123 · 09/09/2017 19:46

Looks like this Ribena is free from sweetener, I think most of the range has sweetener in though.

Samsara123 · 09/09/2017 19:49

The strawberry one and mango and lime are free from too.

Incitatis · 09/09/2017 20:34

Oh I didn't know that. I'll take a look when I next go shopping. I'm always scrutinising labels in a desperate bid to avoid the artificials.

Samsara123 · 09/09/2017 20:49

Yeah me too Grin
