I just tried to buy a bottle of soft drink, you know, water, sugar, flavouring, colour.. And it was nearly impossible to buy any of them without there being loads of aspartame, something k, saccharin, etc..!
In the end I chose 7-up..but even R Whites normal is the same, tango fizzy, vimto, irn Bru, coke... I had no choice at all!

I am ve-ry suspicious...

Anyone know?

Nothing like fresh lemonade, really quenches your thirst. An orange version as well, with fizzy water if you like. There was a shop bought lemonade that was nice with no crap in, can't find it though, the name was something like Just Water Lemonade.
I noticed Tesco has started putting sweetener in their fresh lemonade too, not Aspartame though.

I'm finding it harder and harder to avoid artificial sweeteners. Most of the sugar only brands listed are premium brands and not always easy to obtain when out and about. I can't buy anything other than pure fruit juice in Aldi as all squashes contain sweeteners.

I regulate my sugar intake by drinking mainly water or fruit teas at home, but sometimes I do want something sweet and acidic to wash some food down with. I buy high-juice but have it very diluted. I don't like tea or coffee. So the majority of the time I make sensible choices and it is frustrating that I have lost choice when I want something sweet. I dislike the taste of various sweeteners (I noticed Drench had changed their recipe when it suddenly tasted of soap), and aspartame has a lingering taste for hours afterwards that doesn't fade after other foods/ drinks. It also makes me headachy.

I find in many places that, other than water, the only choice is Coke or Pepsi. I'm not keen on Pespi anyway, but if I really don't want water, Pepsi is the only choice that I won't regret 2 hours later.

I miss lemonade, other than the occasional San Pellegrino, I haven't drunk it in years. Vimto has gone off the list too.

Look at the widespread reporting of withdrawal effects when people kick their diet coke/ pepsi habits... I'm not convinced that substituting sugar for sweeteners is such a positive health choice, and is just a crutch in the way that vaping is for nicotine addicts. People are being deceived into making a choice that is less healthy than they believe.

gluteustothemaximus · 08/09/2017 18:21

Somewhat - lemonade without sweeteners, get 7up. It's our treat drink, and hasn't yet been tainted with the chemicals (yet).

bruffin · 08/09/2017 18:31

Waitrose and m&s do clear lemonade without artificial sweeteners

gluteustothemaximus · 08/09/2017 18:36

🤔🤑

Samsara123 · 08/09/2017 19:22

Fresh juice with fizzy water is nice.

MongerTruffle · 08/09/2017 19:25

I agree. I would much rather have sugar (or even stevia or xylitol) than aspartame.

RoseParade · 08/09/2017 21:28

Finally had time to read a bit more, seems it is more complicated than sweetener triggering insulin release. More to do with sweeteners increasing appetite by acting on various brain areas. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2892765/#!po=41.0448
There does seem to be a lot of scientific research stating that increased artificial sweetener intake is linked to increased weight. And I definitely remember reading (within the last year or so) about the insulin thing, but can't find anything after a cursory internet search...

Madeyemoodysmum · 08/09/2017 21:33

I thought fat coke was free of sweeteners?

I buy the San peligrino too and also the carribean drinks. Rubicon have no sweeteners. And old Jamaica frizzy.

U can get it in asdas.

ILoveGrammar0 · 08/09/2017 21:43

I thought fat coke was free of sweeteners?

Regular Coca-Cola and Pepsi don't have any sweeteners but some other soft drinks have them.

Purplemac · 08/09/2017 22:07

Artificial sweeteners are shit, but so is sugar. The sentence "we should be able to buy simple water with sugar" is shocking. It's a drink, to quench thirst, why do you have to add sugar or sweeteners to it? Why is society so obsessed with everything being sweet that you can't just have basic drinks with natural sweeteners?

Worriedrose · 08/09/2017 22:14

Didn't dick Cheney have something to do with it.
Didn't the Reagan administration let it through
They all seemed to make a lot of money out of it.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/09/2017 22:26

I hate anything with artificial sweeteners and I'm fed up trying to find drinks that don't contain them. I don't drink alcohol and I don't want to drink water when I go out! I used to drink J2O but it now tastes vile and I don't like Coke or Pepsi so it's so limiting. I usually have soda and lime but it does get boring!

Oldie2017 · 09/09/2017 09:02

Somewhat, it is not that hard just to get used to water actually. Years ago and as children we drank fruit juice or squash or ribena and I could never in my 20s drink a pint of water. It would have to be squash but then I moved to water and now I coudl not imagine drinking anything else. All my sons have a pint of tap water by them at all times at home.

I think one of the best ways to start to improve the health of toddlers and children is only to give them water to drink once they have stopped taking breast milk.

bruffin · 09/09/2017 09:09

Its boring to just drink water, i will only hav

bruffin · 09/09/2017 09:12

have one soft drink a day so not a lot.
However it is not just soft drinks now, strongbow cider and a couple of othets now have AS in. Also crabbes non alcoholic.

So much is to do with habit and persevering with trying something different.

San Pellegrino has had a few mentions. A nice drink, but I believe that the orange/lemon cans have the equivalent of 6 or 7 teaspoons of sugar. I don't know anybody who would add that quantity of sugar to e.g. a cup of tea.

I think the government is very behind in keeping up with changing thinking/findings on healthy food and drink consumption. A lot of out of date messages are still available from government or NHS sources on fat, sugar, carbs etc.

bruffin · 09/09/2017 10:52

A can of san pelligrino has the same .
calories as equivalent orange juice

bruffin · 09/09/2017 10:58

This thrwad isnt anout drinking gallibs of sugery drinks a day, its about being able tp avoid horrible tasting AS. 35% of the population have a gene that makes AS taste unpleasant.

Batfurger · 09/09/2017 11:00

Just drink water. Fml invest your energy in something more worthwhile rather than crying into your coke about artificial sweeteners. Talk about a first world problem.

If people didn't need protection from their own greed and bad decisions, this wouldn't have happened. Mothers on here will blame anything except their own decisions for their children's obesity, tooth decay and all other ailments.

DrDreReturns · 09/09/2017 11:06

Does coke have fat in it? Why do people say 'full fat coke,' surely it's 'full sugar coke?'

scaryclown · 09/09/2017 11:08

It's a tiny joke. Semi skilled milk isn't qualified in joinery either Grin

Yes, they're similar, and too much orange juice isn't great either. I suggest you look at the recommended serving size for orange juice. Mine says 150 ml - less than half the quantity of a 330 ml San Pellegrino can.

The thread is about buying drinks with sugar, as opposed to artifical sweeteners (see the OP). Of course sugar is relevant.

bruffin · 09/09/2017 12:07

No, the sugar content is irrelevant
when you are talking about everything in moderation, add exercise and uts even lee relevant
Lets not pretend that AS are used because they are healthier, they are not , manufacturers use them because they are much cheaper. I saw a documentary a few years back which said that aspartemine cost 1/70th the price of sugar.
I dont have fat kids, if anything they are underweight, ds 21 had is body trax done yesterday and his viseral fat score was 1 out of a possible 20, before anyone starts on about fat on the inside/ thin outside

fascicle · 09/09/2017 13:12

Not up to you to decide the scope of the debate.

Of course it is relevant to consider the health implications of sugary drinks in a discussion about the health implications of artificially sweetened drinks. Those are the two main options for sweet drinks.
