Cold mash was a staple of my mother's salads in the 1980s. Cold mash, sliced tomatoes, ham, sliced boiled egg, pickled beetroot. That was the only salad there was.

Now she's all about the buratta and the micro herbs and her cold mash salads are but a distant memory.

I was once served a Christmas dinner that had not just gravy poured all over it (not a problem) but creamed leeks too . The plate looked like vomit. We all laughed it off and luckily we had other food in.
