Aibu about the massive generator rumbling outside our house!!

I've name changed for this as this could out me.

Our neighbours across the road are what I would consider selfish neighbours - parties till the early hours both on week nights and week days, using the public car park to have bbq's therefore blocking anyone from parking in their space etc.

My DD starts school tomorrow for the first time, she's 4. Since 7pm they've had a generator running outside their house which is so fucking loud it's rumbling our house.

I've been over to see what's going on as our DD is being kept awake by it and apparently they have no power so have been given a generator - it's huge.

I asked if this noise will go on all night and I was told yes until the problem was fixed.

My DD is now crying upstairs because she's so tired. What the hell do I do?

Phone council/101 and report and explain. They don't need power all night when they're asleep that's ridiculous, they need to move it or turn it off at a decent hour. Why don't they have power? Can she sleep elsewhere in your house just for tonight?

Localcatlady · 04/09/2017 21:23

I've put her in the back bedroom but it's literally rumbling our house, it's so fucking loud 😭

They said it's a faulty cable - they are the only property on the estate that has no power.

If I ring 101 are they going to think I'm being ridiculous???

Not at all tell them what happened and that they're being massively unreasonable. It might not be 101 to call it's whoever deals with noise nuisances in your area so might be the council. Personally I'd phone 101 and then go back to the neighbour and say ok I've reported this now officially please can you turn it off/move it, why exactly do you need power? Everyone has phones etc now which are tv's, torches and internet all in one!

Bluntness100 · 04/09/2017 21:28

Who gave them the generator, was it the power company?

orecchietti · 04/09/2017 21:29

Whilst I sympathise, I find it a bit much to be so flustered as to why they might need power at 9.30 at night. It's not bloody 3 in the morning is it! In my house this is early evening and if we had the option of having power or not I'd take it - we still need showers, dinner and to get a little bit of work finished off, none of which a torch on my phone will help with...

Bluntness100 · 04/09/2017 21:30

There could be medical equipment in the house that requires power. Op are you aware why they have it and who provided. In my experience utility companies do this due to a need of a vulnerable person in the house.

MrTrebus · 04/09/2017 21:31

Yeah but if your neighbour came round and pleaded with you that their daughter couldn't sleep surely you'd say ok I'll turn it off at 10pm or I'll move it or something! Not just no. Although based on what you just said you'd probably just say no. Which is how all these threads get started.

Primrose06 · 04/09/2017 21:32

Perhaps they have been cut off so hence the need for this.
We had our generator on earlier due to a power cut. But we live in rural area and most neighbours had theirs on to .
It sounds fishy .Report it and hope that things get sorted soon.

John4703 · 04/09/2017 21:33

phone your local power company and ask if they can move te generator to a better place.

Localcatlady · 04/09/2017 21:34

There no one vulnerable in the house, we've loved here for 7 years we know them really well. It's the power company that's provided it because they are the only house on the estate that haven't got power due to a faulty cable - they neighbour told us that along with that it would be on all night.

I'm getting flustered because this will go on all night - they've told us that!! My DD is upstairs crying because she's tired and wants to go to sleep!

It is unlikely the generator will be running all night - if it is a temporary thing it won't be running on a permanent source of fuel so will need to be refilled on a regular basis - and it would cost a fortune to keep running all night.

But until 11 pm or so would be perfectly reasonable I'm afraid.

Maybe talk to them in a constructive fashion, ask them what they absolutely need power for all night and see if they can run a cable from your house for that?

Otherwise you'll have to suck it up I'm afraid.

Localcatlady · 04/09/2017 21:37

John I've tried phoning them - the line shuts at 5pm so I phoned the emergency number and they wanted me to input thr landline number of the property with the fault before connecting me - I don't know their landline

Urubu · 04/09/2017 21:37

Well if the power company gave me a generator because my power was cut off for some reason I would use it!
Are they supposed to leave all the food in their fridge and freezer go bad by turning it off overnight?

Alexandra87 · 04/09/2017 21:38

Of course they need power all night. They will have a fridge/freezer that needs to stay on etc.

Localcatlady · 04/09/2017 21:38

I've just rung 101 for advice and was told they sympathise but can't do a lot as they would be "depriving them of power".

When you have neighbours who you don't like, the slightest thing they do seems unreasonable and irritating. I know, because I have one myself.
Now imagine if it was a family member or close friend who had been without power since 7pm and was running a generator to catch up on all their evening jobs.... put a wash on, do a bit of ironing or maybe homework, watch the England match -you wouldn't mind so much, would you? In fact, you would probably defend their right to have power in their home.
I hope your neighbours WON'T run the generator all night (and if they do, it might be different) - but sorry, I don't think its unreasonable to be running it at 9.30pm. Annoying for the neighbours maybe, but not unreasonable. Just one of those things about living in close proximity to others.

Bluntness100 · 04/09/2017 21:41

Op. Are you sure? Because I've seen this happen before. Power companies will let you go a good twelve hours without power and then offer to put you into a hotel and reimburse. They also provide comp doe the time out of home. Putting a generator in costs them thousands , literally, and they only do it when there is a life at risk. They absolutely do not do it because you're the only one without power. I strongly suspect you have not got the full story here.

ThePinkOcelot · 04/09/2017 21:41

You're just going to have to suck it up. It's not as if they can be without power.

Bufferingkisses · 04/09/2017 21:43

Tell your dd that these things happen and she needs to relax and try to sleep.

Put a cd on low in the hallway or her room, cover the windows as best you can and stop flapping.

Your neighbours need the generator, they're not doing it to annoy you or in spite if you so the history has no relevance.

Make the best of the situation, deep breath, glass of wine and think yourself lucky it's not you worrying about the 100s of £s of food in your freezer or whatever.

Mellington · 04/09/2017 21:44

It's not their fault, it's the utility company for not fixing it faster. Their past behaviour doesn't come into it.

Fridge and freezer need to kept on so generator needs to run.

Toast3 · 04/09/2017 21:45

I absolutely hate humming and buzzing noises too but I don't think they have any option if there is a fault with their electrics....hopefully it won't be for too long...not great or you but I don't think you can ask them to turn it off...
Hope you manage some shut eye....

Localcatlady · 04/09/2017 21:53

Bluntness - I'm absolutely sure. There is not one person living in that house which is considered vulnerable. But your comments have made me wonder exactly why they have been given a generator? Not recently, but before as a street we've been out of power for hours and hours and offered no such thing 🤔

OP posts:
Cheesenacho123 · 04/09/2017 21:53

A fridge can last four hours without power and a freezer 24-48hrs if not opened! So they really don't need a generator unless they have a tropical fish or something and even then they should be aware of the consequences if a power cut were to happen. Past 2/3am there is no need for a generator to be on until at least 6am/7am. I'd be pretty annoyed too if it were my neighbours

Localcatlady · 04/09/2017 21:54

It's not so much the noise because I can attempt to drown that out - it's the fact that it's rumbling our house. There's no disguising that!

OP posts:
Cheesenacho123 · 04/09/2017 21:57

In 20 years I've never ever heard of someone getting a generator for power from a power company. It sounds either dodgy or someone family or friend gave them it and they feel they can have it going all night.
