Aibu about the massive generator rumbling outside our house!!

I've name changed for this as this could out me.

Our neighbours across the road are what I would consider selfish neighbours - parties till the early hours both on week nights and week days, using the public car park to have bbq's therefore blocking anyone from parking in their space etc.

My DD starts school tomorrow for the first time, she's 4. Since 7pm they've had a generator running outside their house which is so fucking loud it's rumbling our house.

I've been over to see what's going on as our DD is being kept awake by it and apparently they have no power so have been given a generator - it's huge.

I asked if this noise will go on all night and I was told yes until the problem was fixed.

My DD is now crying upstairs because she's so tired. What the hell do I do?

It's very likely to be rumbling their house too!

Localcatlady · 04/09/2017 22:01

cheese it was western power that dropped it off - I know that because I heard a van constantly revving it's engine outside and looked to see them reversing the generator up the car park

Ah, maybe they know someone who works for the company then?!

UnconventionalWarfare · 04/09/2017 22:04

If its DNO supplied then 99% they are on the priority list and need to have the supply maintained.

SoPassRemarkable · 04/09/2017 22:08

Maybe they've not paid the bill and don't want to tell you the truth.

SoPassRemarkable · 04/09/2017 22:09

Ring the emergency number again and put your own phone number in. My energy company don't know my phone number...it won't matter.

Localcatlady · 04/09/2017 22:20

Surely if they've not paid the bill then western power wouldn't supply them with a generator?

Mr yeah it would depend on the circumstances, and I'd be very apologetic, but some evenings I couldn't possibly just turn of all electrical power at 10. Some nights not 11, either - I don't think it's at all weird to need electricity, and some people keep different hours to others, which is why I was a bit shocked by your 'why can't they just use their phones' thing.

WittyBrittleTrier · 04/09/2017 22:28

I have a CPAP machine I need to maintain my airways when I sleep. I look healthy as a horse (a rather plump horse Blush). It runs off the mains, not sure if something like that would tip one into the vulnerable category?

UnconventionalWarfare · 04/09/2017 22:33

www.westernpower.co.uk/About-us/Priority-Services.aspx

If your in a WPD area you can apply for this then i believe Witty. I know home dialysis patients will be given a genny if they cant restore the power within a certain time frame.

GladAllOver · 04/09/2017 22:36

The standby generators that power companies use are usually fitted in a soundproofed box. They make very little noise.

SoPassRemarkable · 04/09/2017 22:36

Do you know for sure the generator is from western power or is that what they've told you?

mum11970 · 04/09/2017 22:37

You just have to lump it I'm afraid. Your neighbours need power and that's the only way they can get it in an emergency.

Localcatlady · 04/09/2017 22:41

I know it's from western power, I saw them deliver it and it's got western power on the generator itself

OP posts:
StubbleTurnips · 04/09/2017 22:41

I'd be tempted to walk over, under stealth, and switch the bastard thing off.

Migraleve · 04/09/2017 22:44

I don't see what the problem is tbh. Yes it's noisy and a bit inconvenient but surely if it were you that needed the power you would happily accept the generator.

UnconventionalWarfare · 04/09/2017 22:45

StubbleTurnips you wouldnt do fuck all dont make stupid statements.

elastamum · 04/09/2017 22:45

We had a generator from western power when our supply was off for a few days. It was incredibly noisy.

mineofuselessinformation · 04/09/2017 22:45

Put some other distracting noise on for dd. Leave it playing all night. (Soothing music???)
You might just have to tough it out. It sounds like your neighbours are having a hard time too - the noise will be affecting them as well.

MadamePomfrey · 04/09/2017 22:46

They have been give a generator by the power company, you have seen this yourself, so either they have medical needs or are in someways a priority for power, or the problem has been going on for a while and is unlikely to be fixed in the short term! Either way I don't see a lot you can do. People may say you don't need power over night but that means you can turn the light on in the bathroom, have hot water etc, I can see it's frustrating for you but no matter how unreasonable they maybe normally this isn't their fault and I don't think you can do anything it. Maybe ring the power company tomorrow to complain and hopefully speed things up?

WittyBrittleTrier · 04/09/2017 22:47

TY Unconventional! OP so sorry your daughter is being disturbed, I think the suggestion of an audiobook at a low volume is a good one, maybe somw warm milk and cotton wool in her ears?

AgentProvocateur · 04/09/2017 22:48

Our neighbours had one for a week when the power company fixed their cable. Very annoying, but very unreasonable to expect people to go without power. The bad news is, OP, they'll probably send the pneumatic drills and diggers round tomorrow to try and find the fault. Now, THAT'S noisy.

mum11970 · 04/09/2017 22:52

Do not under any circumstances fiddle with the generator and try and turn it off. We've had one outside our house in the past when emergency work was being done on the road. With the windows shut it was just an annoying rumble outside, certainly didn't keep anyone awake.

WinnieTheMe · 04/09/2017 22:53

I think you're being U. Do they have to give up on drinking milk because they can't keep their fridge going overnight? What about if there is a diabetic in the house? Where do they keep their insulin? Do they have no access to electric lights overnight? Go to the toilet with a torch? Do they have to have cold showers in the morning?

I think it's not reasonable to demand that your neighbours go without power for potentially a prolonged period of time.

Onthehighseas · 04/09/2017 22:53

We've had a generator from our power company too - and of course it was on overnight (who would have turned it off and back on again each day?). I'm surprised you've reported it to the police, it's not their concern surely. Irritating and disruptive, yes, but if its been given to them by the power company, then they arent doing anything wrong and unfortunately you'll just have to get on with it.
